COMPASS Adjunct Research Investigator Jun Lu working with a small glass tube filled with argon gas that contains a twisted nanocarbon in the Kotov Lab at the North Campus Research Center of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor on Wednesday, December 18, 2024. COMPASS is the Center for Complex Particle Systems which is directed by Nicholas Kotov, the Irving Langmuir Distinguished University Professor of Chemical Sciences and Engineering.
Researchers from the Kotov Lab have found that submicrometer twisted filaments made from materials like nanocarbon or metals can produce strong chiral infrared photons, especially in the wavelength range of 500 to 300 nanometers. The twisted filaments emit light that is significantly brighter, up to 100 times more bright than other similar light emitters. The special helical shape of the filaments helps in controlling the type of twisted light they emit. Additionally, coating these nanocarbons with durable, transparent ceramics results in bright and adjustable chiral emitters capable of functioning at temperatures that were previously thought to be unreachable. This advancement opens new possibilities in the field of chiral photonics and high-temperature applications.

For this studio piece, I was influenced by the art period of “Surrealism”. This is because surrealist taps into the audience unconscious’s mind by using forms and shapes that are unnatural. In addition, the artists from this art period were able to bring psychological reaction such as fear and disgusts from the audience.
I was influenced by multi exposure as it displays transparent image same or different person doing some sort of movement. I think displaying multiple images of a person would allow me to express the emotion of fear.
Instead of taking photos of different poses I decided to do a single pose and spread that pose across the photo. This would create a static flow but also produces the concept of fear simply. I took a photo of myself in the room wearing a striped clothing which symbolizes of being and not having freedom. Also, since the theme that is going to be portrayed is fear I purposely made the lightings in the room dark to create a dark tone. I placed myself to do the edge since the multiple images of myself is going to be spread which can create a confusion to audience based on which is the real person.
I used Pixlr to edit the photo. I placed same images by placing them in different layers. Then I would erase the background so that the audience can see the exposure. However, I kept some elements such as the light bulb to create a duplicate effect. Then I made the images transparent by selecting the blending mode into multiply. After that I painted the photo digitally and selected the bar darken to create a natural blend with the photo. However, when I tested this red the concept became controversial as red can symbolize rage. That is why I cooled down with light blue which symbolizes sadness.
Reflection
With this media experiment I was able to emphasize with the tone of the photo. With the colour of blue it allowed the pose to emphasize fear. Also with multiple layers of the same poses it created a natural shading from left to right. This created a flawless change in the gradient of the colour. However, I believed that I should have put variety of poses because not only distinctive poses allows the composition of the work to be positive but also allows the audience to see different aspects of the emotion of fear.

The mosque constitutes of the open courtyard which is surrounded on three sides by cloisters, the only distinguishing feature of these being that the roofs rest on very intricately carved pillars. The fourth side of the Mosque, or whatever is left of the elaborate arches, also functioned as mihrab (wall indicating the direction of Mecca, faced by Muslims when offering prayers).
