(65th Commemoration of D-Day on the Hillman site)

Hillman Fortress is located inland near Colleville-Montgomery, formerly known as Colleville-sur-Orne, on the British landingzone codenamed Sword Beach.

Built in 1942, this German occupying forces strongpoint (WN17) is a concrete set of 600 meters long where the headquarters of the 736th Regiment Grenadiers was established. It consists of 18 half buried blockaus connected by underground passageways.

On the evening of 6 June 1944, the British First Suffolk Regiment fought a costly battle to win the Hillman strongpoint, but the Germans had resisted long enough to allow the Wehrmacht 21st Panzer division regroupment and deny General Montgomery the advance into Caen.

On 9 June, Rommel is back on the front and the 21st Panzer division is grouped with two SS units.

The Allied Forces captured Caen after a month of fighting, including heavy Allied air raids.

Hillman site is being restored since 1990 by an association called "Les Amis du Suffolk Régiment".

Creative door decorations liven up the Lt. Gen. Timothy J. Maude Complex in the weeks leading up to the holidays.

Photo by David Ruderman, HRC Public Affairs

HRC Commander, Maj. Gen. Richard P. Mustion; Chief of Staff, Col. BJ Constantine Jr.; and Sgt. Maj. Linda M. Kessinger of the Enlisted Personnel Management Directorate, took on the tough task of picking winners from among the outstanding decorative efforts during a walking tour of the complex Dec. 18.

The trio served as the final arbiters of creative candidates selected by each HRC directorate. Yet, even while assessing each finalist, the short morning tour made it clear that HRC Soldiers and civilians throughout the complex had expended considerable creativity, thought and humor in adorning their doorways and workspaces and with an impressive range of decorations.

The winners of this year’s Door Decorating Contest are: First Place: EPMD; Second Place: G-3, Command Staff; and Third Place: OPMD. The CG will present trophies to the winning teams early in the New Year.

In addition, myriad individuals brought a bit of mirth and holiday cheer to life in offices all around the Maude Complex. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

Despite the complex blending of spices and frag- rant roots that gives Balinese food its intriguingly different flavour, the typical Balinese kitchen is remarkably simple. The centrepiece of the kitchen generally a spartan, functional room is the wood fired stove topped by a blackened clay pot used to steam rice and leaf-wrapped food. In many modern households, this is joined by a gas cooker for boiling water and frying. Both stoves receive daily offerings of a few grains of rice, a flower and salt a gift to Brahma, the animistic god of fire.

Although all utensils were once made of clay, most cooks now use metal for cooking. Many people in the major towns also use electric rice cookers, but most agree that the traditional method for cooking rice is superior. After the rice has been well washed and soaked, it is partially boiled, then set in a woven steaming basket (kukusan) over a clay pot filled with boiling water. The conical kukusan is covered with a clay lid and the rice left to steam. Every so often, boiling water is scooped out of the clay pot and poured over the rice to keep it moist and prevent the grains from sticking together.

Bamboo is often used in the Balinese kitchen. A narrow bamboo tube is used to direct a puff of air into the fire, acting as a bellows. A split length of bamboo plaited so that it fans out is used as a scoop for lifting out and draining fried food, while bamboo handles with small coconut shells on the end make scoops or ladles.

Every Balinese kitchen has its coconut scraper, either a wooden board set with rows of sharp metal spikes or a sheet of thin alumunium with spikes punched out. Grated coconut is mixed into many dishes, or squeezed with water to make coconut milk.

Another essential item is the saucer like stone mortar (batu base) used for grinding dry spices, chillies, shallots and other seasonings. The Balinese mortar is shallow and the stone pestle has a handle carved at right angles to the head so that the action is one of grinding rather than pounding.

The chopping block used in the preparation of almost every meal is usually a cross section slice of a tree trunk, the wood strong enough to take the repeated blows of a sharp cleaver used to mince meat or fish to a paste, and for chopping and slicing various roots and vegetables.

The furniture in a Balinese kitchen is minimal; apart from the stove, a bench and a food cupboard, where the cooked food is stored during the day, there's usually a wide, low bamboo platform, used for sitting on while preparing foods. It also doubles as an eating area or a spare bed. Practicality is the theme of any Balinese kitchen.

Nov.4, 2018: The Karnak Temple Complex, commonly known as Karnak, comprises a vast mix of temples, chapels, pylons, and other buildings near Luxor, in Egypt.

A cult temple dedicated to Amun, Mut and Khonsu. The largest religious building complex ever constructed. The temple of Karnak was known as Ipet-isu—or “most select of places”—by the ancient Egyptians. It is a city of temples built over 2,000 years and dedicated to the Theban triad of Amun, Mut, and Khonsu. This derelict place is still capable of overshadowing many wonders of the modern world and in its day must have been awe-inspiring.

For the largely uneducated ancient Egyptian population, this could only have been the place of the gods. It is the largest religious building ever made, covering about 200 acres (1.5 km by 0.8 km), and was a place of pilgrimage for nearly 2,000 years. The area of the sacred enclosure of Amun alone is sixty-one acres and could hold ten average European cathedrals. The great temple at the heart of Karnak is so big that St Peter’s, Milan, and Notre Dame Cathedrals would fit within its walls.

The Hypostyle hall, at 54,000 square feet (16,459 meters) and featuring 134 columns, is still the largest room of any religious building in the world. In addition to the main sanctuary there are several smaller temples and a vast sacred lake – 423 feet by 252 feet (129 by 77 meters). The sacred barges of the Theban Triad once floated on the lake during the annual Opet festival. The lake was surrounded by storerooms and living quarters for the priests, along with an aviary for aquatic birds.

The Egyptians believed that towards the end of annual agricultural cycle the gods and the earth became exhausted and required a fresh input of energy from the chaotic energy of the cosmos.

To accomplish this magical regeneration the Opet festival was held yearly at Karnak and Luxor. It lasted for twenty-seven days and was also a celebration of the link between pharaoh and the god Amun. The procession began at Karnak and ended at Luxor Temple, one and a half miles (2.4 kilometres) to the south.

The statue of the god Amun was bathed with holy water, dressed in fine linen, and adorned in gold and silver jewellery. The priests then placed the god in a shrine and onto the ceremonial barque supported by poles for carrying. Pharaoh emerged from the temple, his priests carrying the barque on their shoulders, and together they moved into the crowded streets. A troop of Nubian soldiers serving as guards beat their drums, and musicians accompanied the priests in song as incense filled the air.

At Luxor, Pharaoh and his priests entered the temple and ceremonies were performed to regenerate Amun, recreate the cosmos and transfer Amun’s power to Pharaoh. When he finally emerged from the temple sanctuary, the vast crowds cheered him and celebrated the guaranteed fertility of the earth and the expectation of abundant harvests.

During the festival the people were given over 11000 loaves of bread and more than 385 jars of beer, and some were allowed into the temple to ask questions of the god. The priests spoke the answers through a concealed window high up in the wall, or from inside hollow statues.

Here's an unique idea that Gurnee Mills has. There are wetlands between Gurnee Mills and Interstate 94 so they have a Wetland Complex as a result. This is a extremely unique idea I wish other mall had as well.

Zofiówka Sanatorium is a defunct mental health facility in the town of Otwock in Poland, built at the beginning of the 20th century. In the Second Polish Republic, the sanatorium complex was expanded with more buildings and staff. Zofiówka initially had 95 beds, but this number had increased to 275 by 1935. The Jewish history of Zofiówka has come to its tragic end in the course of the Holocaust following the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany.

Construction

The history of the old Jewish sanatorium starts at the beginning of the 20th century. Back then, the institutionalized treatment of mental disorders was in its infancy. In 1906, Polish-Jewish neurologists Adam Wizel, Samuel Goldflam, Ludwik Bregman and Adolf Weisblat formed the "Society for Poor Jews with Nervous and Mental Illnesses" (Polish: Towarzystwo Opieki nad Ubogimi, Nerwowo i Umysłowo Chorymi Żydami). The sanatorium's director was Dr. Stefan Miller.A year later, a donation by the philanthropist Sophia Endelman enabled the purchase of 17 hectares of land and in 1908 the first building of a new sanatorium was built by the association there. An important part of the treatment was restoring patients to society by enabling them to practice employment. In its isolation ward (part of the hospital reserved for the most difficult patients), the mother of famous Polish poet, Julian Tuwim, Adela Tuwim was placed before World War II.

Holocaust history

In late 1940, the asylum fell within the so-called ‘medical zone’ formed by the Germans in the newly established Jewish ghetto of Otwock. The institution was still working during the early stages of the occupation of Poland, but the conditions dramatically worsened. Almost 400 patients were sentenced to a slow and torturous death by starvation as part of the Nazi extermination Aktionen. Zofiówka ended its existence at the same time as ghetto in Otwock.

On the morning of 19 August 1942, the Ukrainian Trawnikis supervised by the Germans, gathered the patients and the hospital crew in the first pavilion. Some 100-140 victims were shot on the spot, the rest were put on the Holocaust train to Treblinka along with Otwock’s Jewish population of 7,000.[2] Only a few doctors, who managed to escape to Warsaw by ambulance, survived. Some of the staff people committed suicide. In 1943 Zofiówka served Germans as Lebensborn, the institution of charity care. The facility also dealt with the Germanization of Polish children, and bringing them up for adoption to families in Germany.

After World War II

Zofiówka returned to its original medical purposes after the Soviet takeover, but patients were mainly children and young people. Between 1985 and mid 90’s, the facility was used in treating neuropsychiatric disorders associated with drug addiction. This continued on until the decision was made to finally close it.

In 2015, the Internet viral video called 11B-X-1371 was found to have been filmed at the abandoned facility, though by whom and when, exactly, are not known.

Broadford is just a short distance from Melbourne in Victoria, Australia and is the location for the annual Bike Bonanza run each Easter by Motorcycling Australia at the State Motorcycle Complex. Here over one thousand motorcycles are in action at the road racing circuit, moto-cross and enduro tracks, trials area, and speedway.

The feature marque this year was Moto Guzzi including the appearance of six factory racers from the 30's, 40's, and 50's. No apologies for a lot of photos of these bikes as I will probably never see or hear them again. Thanks to the Italian owners for bringing them South. The collection of Guzzis in the car park was also in the hundreds.

This is a large folder with 345 photos and probably only shows a quarter of the bikes present.

A great weekend with friendly atmosphere and the chance to see and hear some great machines.

I have tried to get all the labelling correct but if you have some more information let me know and I'll add it.

Enjoy the photos. I can provide higher resolution if needed. No cost but if you use them I would like credit given.

Belvedere Battery was the main entrance to the whole fort complex, situated below Amherst Redoubt and above Cornwallis Battery. Although referred to as a battery it is more of a redoubt, originally having been protected by ditches and ramparts on all sides.

The main entrance is across a bridge over the ditch from Military (now Maxwell) Road. To the left as you enter the battery is the Guardhouse which gives access from its upper floor to (the now mostly destroyed) Amherst Redoubt. The lower floor of the Guardhouse is entered via a short passageway off the tunnel to the south of the Guardhouse that leads from the battery to the outworks of the tenaile, Spur Battery and Prince William's Bastion. The passageway enters a small courtyard which has nine musket loops protecting the tunnel entrance and the gates to Prince William's Bastion. This southern courtyard gives access to the lower Guardroom which judging from its wooden floors, may have served as an armory or magazine. At the northern end of the guardhouse is another small courtyard provided with musket loops and entrances to the surrounding ditches. These musket loops could provide enfilading fire down to the main entrance bridge and cover the ditch in front of Amherst Redoubt. The well in this courtyard was once much deeper, but was converted to a cistern with a hand pump at some point (perhaps at the time Brompton's water supply was cut of by works in the Dockyard cutting through the main spring that fed the area.)

The parapet to the south of the guardroom contains a battery of three guns covering the tenaile to the front. Just beyond these is a small 'expense' magazine building (one of two examples to have survived at the fort) with a wooden floor and ventilation system. This magazine would have held 'ready use' ammunition for the nearby guns.

Beyond the magazine is a further battery of four guns (pictured above) situated to cover the west ditch of Prince William's Bastion. At the end of the ditch where it meets the curtain wall was a WW2 spigot mortar pit with an ammunition store nearby (I believe these are gone now).

The largest building at Fort Amherst, the main magazine, is located on Belvedere Battery. This huge, casemated building could hold the tons of powder and shot requires by the fort and is set in a sunken courtyard to provide cover from enemy fire. Next to this (and still buried today) was a laboratory building (presumably related to the testing of gunpowder). Above the main magazine there was once a large, red-brick blockhouse. This is depicted in a few old images but appears to have been demolished in the late 19th or early 20th century.

In the 1960s this area was used as a land-fill site, which led to the ditches, sunken courtyard and main magazine being buried under fifteen to twenty feet of rubble and rubbish.
