The Alt.Skirt can be done in a variety of fabrics and styles. Shown here in its simplest form, this skirt has box pleats, no belt loops or pockets.
Excerpt from the Origin of the Compass Rose by Bill Thoen
The compass rose has appeared on charts and maps since the 1300's when the portolan charts first made their appearance. The term "rose" comes from the figure's compass points resembling the petals of the well-known flower.
Originally, this device was used to indicate the directions of the winds (and it was then known as a wind rose), but the 32 points of the compass rose come from the directions of the eight major winds, the eight half-winds and the sixteen quarter-winds.
In the Middle Ages, the names of the winds were commonly known throughout the Mediterranean countries as tramontana (N), greco (NE), levante (E), siroco (SE), ostro (S), libeccio (SW), ponente (W) and maestro (NW). On portolan charts you can see the initials of these winds labeled around the edge as T, G, L, S, O, L, P, and M.

When I saw this little office/library I could not believe my eyes. Like most of the Compass Rose, a B&B in Coupeville, every surface was covered with treasures. Our photo group was invited for a visit to this treasure trove of antiques, by the delightful owners Marshall and Jan.

I had some trouble with it, because I printed it out on my laserjet - no color indicators as to fold orientation. However it's pretty easy to figure out.
I really like the way it collapses into itself by doing a funky twist- it was non-intuitive at first, but now it seems so easy!
definitely good to have crisp paper on this one. mushy small paper doesn't work too well.
Thanks again for sharing this with us! I appreciate it.
PS - Never underestimate the joy of drawing a bloody cutlass.
PPS - Here is a link to the fun pirate assets (free) by Chris Spooner, which I used for the hat, cunning pistol, cutlass, compass rose, & scroll banner. I drew my own eye patch but it was based on Chris's.
If I hadn't used these wonderful assets my drawing still wouldn't be finished, would look super rotten, & I'd have pulled all my hair out & collapsed into a puddle of rage & exhaustion on the floor.

PPPS: That cool grungy font I rastered & mesh-transformed is called "Poison Hope" --yay! Going to try to use it forever just because of the name.

I am grateful to have been able to dance in a century-old ballroom—the largest circular ballroom in the world—where all the old jazz and big band greats used to play.
My husband got me this lovely, palm-sized vintage compass at a ship salvage shop and antique dealer in Bangladesh. The walnut-toned wood box has a metal label reading "Negretti & Zambra, as does the compass itself, both on the cover, and under the glass on the rose's face. The outside of the compass lid reads "Edward VII Compass King & Emporer 1908". The date, 1908, and the word, "London" is inscribed on the compass rose under the glass. The compass has a fob, as well as a sliding knob to lock the floating needle in place when not in use.
The poem, Robert Frost's "The Road Less Taken" has been engraved on brass-toned metal and appears to have been attached to the inside cover. This poem dates to 1915 and was not really considered a classic until the mid-1920s. I'm assuming that the inscription was added later, particularly because the font-styles are more modern.
My husband isn't sure if the compass actually dates to 1908. Negretti & Zambra manufactured compasses, telescopes, monocules, barameters and other scientific items during this time period, but I was unable to find a similar compass style during a fairly comprehensive Internet search.
If you know anything about vintage compasses, please leave a comment. No matter whether this is a reproduction or an actual antique, it is still a wonderful addition to my collection of cartography and geographic ephemera.
In this case it is a compass rose. Nope, just the cardinal directions!

The next round of Project Spectrum is set and ready to go! I am so excited to introduce the new theme. Based on the compass rose and the cardinal directions, we will explore the colors that are traditionally associated with the points on the compass.
This year, we will base the exploration around FOUR colors - one for each direction - and participants can combine and mix these colors with any other color. Each direction is also traditionally linked to a natural material, and you can choose to work with these materials for your projects, e.g. glass beads, wooden buttons, metal pins, etc. For deeper interpretation, you can also choose to incorporate the related seasons and elements into your creative projects.
NORTH (March/April)
Color: Green
Material: Stones/Gems/Rocks
Season: Winter
Element: Earth
EAST (May/June)
Color: Yellow
Material: Wood
Season: Spring
Element: Air
SOUTH (July/August)
Color: Red
Material: Metal
Season: Summer
Element: Fire
WEST (September/October)
Color: Blue
Material: Glass
Season: Autumn
Element: Water

Attaching to any size belt (up to 2.5"), this hip pack features three small pockets, a key loop, a metal clip and slide roll holders. The small pockets are big enough to carry ID, Credit card or candies and small trinkets such as a pocket watch. One key loop is made of leather and the other is a small brass clip. It is made of 100% cotton in a spice tone and accented with brass rivets and square rings.
Open width is 14" and because of the button closures can be attached after the fact to an outfit.
Available plain (as shown) or distressed (please attach a note if you want it painted). Both styles can be had for $25.00. I am also willing to do it in different colors - such as dark brown, black, or tan and also with silver accents instead of brass.
The workmen demolishing the Granada Theatre were salvaging bricks but not much else. There was no attempt made to save these large limestone carvings that came off the facade.
This part of the building was somewhat separate from the main structure with the ornate terra cotta facade and was where they had just begun the demolition.
