A compass rose is a symbol in the form of a circle that has marked around the directions in which the circumference of the horizon is divided, and which would be south, east, north and west. His invention is attributed to the Mallorcan Ramon Llull, although the detailed description given by Pliny the Elder in the book could have been his basic reference.

In the navigation charts it is represented by thirty-two (deformed) rhombuses joined at one end while the other indicates the course on the circle of the horizon. Above all is the fleur de lis with which the North is usually represented. This symbol is documented from the XV century.

Still trying to edit old photos from places that deserved a better destiny than my initial try.

The spiral case is 27-meter high.

This photo was taken with almost no light, as a JPG, with a point and shoot, and in a hurry. I couldnt decide between 2 of the photos so I made both one which gave it a fish eye effect.

(I had to delete the other one to make room in Flickr :( )

There is a newspaper here that posts photos sent by locals, I am not into that, but noticed that most of the titles are cringe worthy. I got a little bit self conscious.

Anyways, found a photo of this place in Reddit, and found it very photogenic, like some other 2k people did.

Well, this is my try at making a photo of it. We had to hurry directly to the place since it was almost dark, but managed to make it there on time.

Like some other places in the world, some rich mate decided it was cool to have this place done for others to enjoy. I love the motivation behind individuals that make this.

This is why I love my customers. I had a client ask me to change my Punk Kilt into a mini-skirt and do it in dark purple and it was a blast to create. She also requested non-real leather and so all the accents are done in a faux leather.

I’ve Search the Stars in the Skies Above

Wanting, no hoping to find that true north

Yes, I have my compass in hand

It does guide me as I watch the needle spin around

Whether I’m driving or walking to my destination

The entire world stands before me

Even when the skies are cloudy or dark

My compass is in hand, guiding me, never letting me down

Once I have found you, seen the look in your eyes

I no longer need that compass

But I will use it to find you from time to time in case I lose my way.

Another work of short poetry or prose to complement the image captured one afternoon in the Austin area. The setting was looking to the NW with a compass in hand I regularly use while hiking but here was to be the subject with an image captured. I got the idea for this macro type close-up image from this on Flickr: www.flickr.com/photos/fateapics/51319097706. Like this other image, I wanted to focus on the compass rose as it pointed north, as well as a look across the compass itself with portions of the dial and directions in focus, while others not. I used VR 105mm f/2.8G on my Nikon Z8 Mirrorless Camera and tried different angles with the afternoon sunlight coming into my apartment.

As for the poem itself, that was a hodgepodge of thoughts that I've had about the meaning of a compass in life as well as finding that true north that leads a person forward.

Just a quick shot of a compass in our front yard.

A pretty classic composition but I always like to grab this shot if I have time. The dreamlights add a nice twist and I always love the glow on the compass rose. I spent quite a bit of time dodging and burning this one to try and set the mood just right and in the end I think this is my favorite I've done of this shot.

When you finally arrive at the top of Sentinel Dome in Yosemite, it really feels as if you are standing on top of the world. The 360 degree view is truly something to behold and the panoramas are jaw dropping no matter which direction you turn. Stunning views of Half Dome, El Capitan and just about every peak in the Sierra Nevada range are visible, and you really need to stand in one spot and drink it in to get the full effect before turning to enjoy an equally breathtaking view. I was very fortunate that Glacier Point road was still open as they had closed it the week before due to snow.

When I arrived just before sunset, this place was CRAWLING with people. But as soon as the sun dropped behind the ridge, everyone disappeared, leaving me completely alone to enjoy the view as the surrounding peaks lit up with alpen glow during the blue hour. As I turned to head back down, I noticed how this compass rose was catching the light, and I stopped to take a bracket or two. It really does emphasize the fact that you can see forever in every direction.

Shortly after I took this shot, the darkness moved in and I set off back to the car with my headlamp lighting the way. I stopped a few times on the way back, and just listened. It was really rather unnerving as I heard absolutely NOTHING when I stopped. No wind, no crickets, no owls, no running water, no traffic.....nothing but absolute silence. As beautiful as that walk was under the stars, I was glad to finally get back to the car. There just something sketchy about pure silence when you are walking through the woods at night....and you see a pair of eyes gleaming at you from behind a bush....

Let's just say I didn't waste any time getting back to the car. :)

When taking photos of the partially frozen Little Angelesy Lake this morning I found this compass rose. It is in the footpath at the western end of the lake. A Google search has so far failed to find out any information about it. I just like the way it points north towards the far end of Scotland (Rose Ness is at the south eastern end of Orkney mainland) and south to Capetown and then to a local bonfire!

Best viewed in Large.

This is absolutely, positively my very most favorite ever dish served on the Regent ships.

“This revised illustration of the newly configured LLRV was largely faithful to the final planform. It shows the cockpit in front of the vehicle, the avionics at the aft end, and the true location of the maneuvering rockets. In the background is the Flight Research Center and Rogers Dry Lake. This photograph is a wonderful, battered unicorn. Not only is it one of the rarer concept images of the LLRV, it’s also the FIRST/ONLY time I’ve come across it (or any other original LLRV concept art ‘photo’) in color. It seems to have been part of a binder(s), displayed and obviously handled…a lot, I’m sure all by Bell Aerosystems/NASA personnel. I didn’t dare attempt any “clean up” for fear of doing more harm than good.

And, as a bonus, the artist’s signature - J. R. Fisken - is visible! Although I’ve found nothing on him, I’ll take it.

Note the wonderful detail of the Dryden Flight Research Center, to include the parked cars & aircraft. Even the rail line & freight train...its dual locomotives & caboose being easily discernible. Finally, in the lower right corner, the large compass rose painted on the dry lake to aid inbound aircraft. Really gorgeous airbrush work...only now revealed.

Thanks to Surreal-Journey, this is a Compass Rose that is telling us which direction and the mileage to other battlefield sites from Prospect Hill. You can't throw a stone here without hitting land affected by the Civil War.

Located in the Roger's Park neighborhood of Chicago on North Sheridan Road, this was one of the largest and most ornate theaters ever built in that city. Constructed in 1926 of elements taken from actual palaces, churches and villas in Italy and Spain, it showed films until the 1970's and after that, rock concerts. It was purchased in 1988 by the Seniors Life Styles Corporation and demolished in 1989 - 1990. The exterior, seen here, was terra cotta that was stripped off and sold. The Historic American Buildings Survey recorded the building in their survey and it is generally agreed that it was in pristine shape and did not need to be demolished

I was with some friends in Chicago in November of 1989 as the demolition was proceeding and was able to get these and other photos of the beginning of the demolition process.
