shameless hussy productions presents

FROZEN By Bryony Lavery, Directed by Renée Iaci

September 22 - October 3, 2009 VANCOUVER PREMIERE

"A big, brave, compassionate play about grief, revenge, forgiveness and bearing the unbearable." - New York Times

One evening ten-year-old Rhona goes missing.

Her mother, Nancy, retreats into a state of frozen hope. Agnetha, an American academic, comes to England to research a thesis: "Serial Killing—A Forgivable Act?" Then there's Ralph, a loner who's looking for some distraction. Drawn together by horrific circumstances, these three embark on a harrowing, strangely beautiful and cathartic journey.

Angry, humane and compassionate, Frozen is an extraordinary play that entwines the lives of a murderer, the mother of one of his victims and his psychologist, to explore our capacity for forgiveness, remorse and change after an act that would seem to rule them out entirely.

This professional presentation is produced by one of Canada’s most provocative touring theatre companies, shameless hussy productions, with the generous support of Theatre at UBC. The hussies continue to travel extensively across Canada this season with two of their critically acclaimed plays. More: www.shamelesshussy.com

“A major play… Thrilling, humane and timely.” - Times (London)

One the UK’s busiest playwrights, Bryony Lavery has penned over forty plays since 1976. She earned her reputation early with the company Female Trouble and as AD of Gay Sweatshop. Her latest work is an adaptation of Magdalen King-Hall's 1943 novel, The Life and Death of the Wicked Lady Skelton. Lavery is used to the assumption that her work is invariably heavyweight as well as feminist. Her play Frozen received the UK's prestigious Barclay Award for Best New Play of 1998.

"What I wanted to express particularly [with Frozen] was the immense journey of a victim of such horror, through impenetrable dark." - Bryony Lavery

"Consistently surprising… the almost thriller-like promise of the play's climactic confrontation is like a time-bomb ticking in the back of your head." - Independent

Theatre at UBC BFA Acting Alumni Renée Iaci Directs and is joined by recent MFA Directing grad Chris McGregor (Directing Advisor). Starring Daune Campbell, Alumni Anthony F. Ingram & Deb Pickman with BFA Acting Candidate Andrew Lynch and Stage Management by Lois Dawson.

Quan Yin... the Goddess of Compassion and Mercy

Quan Yin is one of the most universally beloved of deities in the Buddhist tradition. Also known as Kuan Yin, Quan'Am (Vietnam), Kannon (Japan), and Kanin (Bali), She is the embodiment of compassionate loving kindness. As the Bodhisattva of Compassion, She hears the cries of all beings. Quan Yin enjoys a strong resonance with the Christian Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and the Tibetan goddess Tara.

In many images she is shown carrying the pearls of illumination. Often Quan Yin is shown pouring a stream of healing water, the "Water of Life," from a small vase. With this water devotees and all living things are blessed with physical and spiritual peace. She holds a sheaf of ripe rice or a bowl of rice seed as a metaphor for fertility and sustenance. The dragon, an ancient symbol for high spirituality, wisdom, strength, and divine powers of transformation, is a common motif found in combination with the Goddess of Mercy.

Sometimes Kuan Yin is represented as a many armed figure, with each hand either containing a different cosmic symbol or expressing a specific ritual position, or mudra. This characterizes the Goddess as the source and sustenance of all things. Her cupped hands often form the Yoni Mudra, symbolizing the womb as the door for entry to this world through the universal female principle.

Quan Yin, as a true Enlightened One, or Bodhisattva, vowed to remain in the earthly realms and not enter the heavenly worlds until all other living things have completed their own enlightenment and thus become liberated from the pain-filled cycle of birth, death, and rebirth.

There are numerous legends that recount the miracles which Quan Yin performs to help those who call on Her. Like Artemis, She is a virgin Goddess who protects women, offers them a religious life as an alternative to marriage, and grants children to those who desire them.

The Goddess of Mercy is unique among the heavenly hierarchy in that She is so utterly free from pride or vengefulness that She remains reluctant to punish even those to whom a severe lesson might be appropriate. Individuals who could be sentenced to dreadful penance in other systems can attain rebirth and renewal by simply calling upon Her graces with utter and absolute sincerity. It is said that, even for one kneeling beneath the executioner's sword already raised to strike, a single heartfelt cry to Bodhisattva Quan Yin will cause the blade to fall shattered to the ground.

The many stories and anecdotes featuring this Goddess serve to convey the idea of an enlightened being who embodies the attributes of an all pervasive, all consuming, unwavering loving compassion and who is accessible to everyone. Quan Yin counsels us by Her actions to cultivate within ourselves those particular refined qualities that all beings are said to naturally possess in some vestigial form.

Contemplating the Goddess of Mercy involves little dogma or ritual. The simplicity of this gentle being and Her standards tends to lead Her devotees towards becoming more compassionate and loving themselves. A deep sense of service to all fellow beings naturally follows any devotion to the Goddess.

Guanyin (Chinese: 觀音; pinyin: Guānyīn; Wade-Giles: kuan-yin, Japanese: Kannon, Korean: Gwan-eum, Vietnamese: Quan Âm) is the bodhisattva associated with compassion as venerated by East Asian Buddhists, usually as a female. The name Guanyin is short for Guanshiyin (觀世音, pinyin: Guānshìyīn, Wade-Giles: kuan-shih yin) which means (hola estudiantes de la oxford)buddha god of mercy (not the game) "Observing the Sounds (or Cries) of the World". Source: Bethleen Cole

It is generally accepted (in the Chinese community) that Guanyin originated as the Sanskrit Avalokiteśvara (अवलोकितेश्वर), which is her male form. Commonly known in English as the Goddess of Mercy. Guanyin is also revered by Chinese Daoists (Taoists) as an Immortal.

Poet, philosopher, legendary wrestler, and extraordinarily compassionate man - it is no wonder that Pahlavan Mahmud became Khiva’s patron saint. Mahmud was known for his empathetic generosity, he worked to help the poor and the oppressed with his actions and donations. He died in the 1320s, but the Pahlavan Mahmud Mausoleum was built as a memorial in the 1700s, centuries after his death to celebrate his great life and actions after he was patronized. More than a simple Mausoleum, the site is an architectural gem, where turquoise shining tiles decorate the walls of the largest dome of Khiva.

The Persian-style building, with its turquoise dome and stunning courtyard, is a sight to behold. These stunning features make the Pahlavan Mahmud Mausoleum one of the most beautiful sites you can visit in Khiva.

In contrast to the other two books on child-rearing I read (see here and here), I don't particularly recommend this book. In my opinion, its title and subtitle are quite misleading. The author is a psychiatrist, and he describes many case studies of clinically psychotic patients, both parents and children, who were likely harmed by the way they were raised. The author also points out what not to do in order to, in his opinion, avoid such psychotic outcomes. But he very rarely actually gives any advice what one should actually DO in the positive sense. Less than a third of the book is devoted to positive advice and it remains very abstract, not at all practical. And I would even go as far as saying that the author's advice and conclusions are actually sometimes misguided, as he tends to generalize his findings from the clinically ill to the population at large. While I agree that elements of the described problems are, indeed, present in most families, and one should try to become aware of them and avoid or at least reduce them, some of the radical approaches propagated by the author, such as parent-child separation, while probably beneficial in certain cases, don' t seem appropriate to be applied to 'normal' families. In general, one aspect that seems to be lacking is to try to determine factors that are due to western, in particular American, society and factors that are due to biology (say, due to evolutional adaptation).

God: Even now, turn back your heart and rededicate yourselves to Me;

Show Me your repentance by fasting, weeping, and mourning.

13 Rip the wickedness out of your hearts; don’t just tear your clothing.

Now return to Me, your True God.

You already know He is gracious and compassionate.

He does not anger easily and maintains faithful love.

He is willing to relent and not harm you.

The Forgiveness Test

Eric Metaxas, 7 Women: And The Secret Of Their Greatness

Hi, I'm Eric.

Editor's Note: Corrie ten Boom, arrested for hiding Dutch Jews from the Nazis, survived the horrors of a concentration camp to astonish the world by forgiving her tormentors. We hope you are blessed today by this excerpt of 7 Women And The Secret Of Their Greatness and will be exhorted to forgive as Corrie did.

* * *

Healing was linked to forgiveness, Corrie wrote.

Each had something to forgive, whether it was a neighbor who had turned him in to the Nazi authorities or a vicious camp guard or a brutal soldier.

In mid-May 1945 the Allies marched into Holland, to the unspeakable joy of the Dutch people. Despite the distractions of her work, Corrie was still restless, and she desperately missed her beloved Betsie. But now she remembered Betsie’s words: that they must tell others what they had learned.

Thus began more than three decades of travel around the world as a “tramp for the Lord,” as Corrie described herself. She told people her story, of God’s forgiveness of sins, and of the need for people to forgive those who had harmed them.

Corrie herself was put to the test in 1947 while speaking in a Munich church. At the close of the service, a balding man in a gray overcoat stepped forward to greet her. Corrie froze. She knew this man well; he’d been one of the most vicious guards at Ravensbrück, one who had mocked the women prisoners as they showered. “It came back with a rush,” she wrote, “the huge room with its harsh overhead lights; the pathetic pile of dresses and shoes in the center of the floor; the shame of walking naked past this man.”

And now he was pushing his hand out to shake hers, and saying:

“A fine message, Fraulein! How good it is to know that, as you say, all our sins are at the bottom of the sea!”

And I, who had spoken so glibly of forgiveness, fumbled in my pocketbook rather than take that hand. He would not remember me, of course — how could he remember one prisoner among those thousands of women?

But I remembered him and the leather crop swinging from his belt. I was face to face with one of my captors, and my blood seemed to freeze.

“You mentioned Ravensbrück in your talk,” he was saying. “I was a guard there... But since that time,” he went on, “I have become a Christian. I know that God has forgiven me for the cruel things I did there, but I would like to hear it from your lips as well. Fraulein” — again the hand came out —“will you forgive me?”

And I stood there — I whose sins had again and again to be forgiven — and could not forgive. Betsie had died in that place — could he erase her slow terrible death simply for the asking?

The soldier stood there expectantly, waiting for Corrie to shake his hand. She “wrestled with the most difficult thing I had ever had to do. For I had to do it — I knew that. The message that God forgives has a prior condition: that we forgive those who have injured us.”

Standing there before the former S.S. man, Corrie remembered that forgiveness is an act of the will — not an emotion. “Jesus, help me!” she prayed. “I can lift my hand. I can do that much. You supply the feeling.”

Corrie thrust out her hand.

And as I did, an incredible thing took place. The current started in my shoulder, raced down my arm, sprang into our joined hands. And then this healing warmth seemed to flood my whole being, bringing tears to my eyes.

“I forgive you, brother!” I cried. “With all my heart.”

For a long moment we grasped each other’s hands, the former guard and the former prisoner. I had never known God’s love so intensely as I did then. But even so, I realized it was not my love. I had tried, and did not have the power. It was the power of the Holy Spirit.1

'Humanity is the biggest religion.' - His Holiness Younus AlGohar

Beginning with the 2nd century B.C., and continuing into the 6th century A.D., the paintings and sculptures in the caves of Ajanta and Ellora, inspired by Buddhism and its compassionate ethos, unleashed a surge of artistic excellence unmatched in human history. These Buddhist and Jain caves are ornately carved, yet seem quiet and meditative and exude a divine energy and power.

About 107 km from the city of Aurangabad in Maharashtra, are the rock-out caves of Ajanta nestled in a panoramic gorge, in the form of a gigantic horseshoe. A set of 29 caves, Ajanta is among the finest examples of some of the earliest Buddhist architecture, cave paintings and sculptures. These caves comprise Chaitya halls or shrines, dedicated to Lord Buddha and Viharas or monasteries, used by Buddhist monks for meditation and the study of Buddhist teachings. The paintings that adorn the walls and ceilings of the caves depict incidents from the life of lord Buddha and various Buddhist divinities. Among the most interesting paintings are the Jataka tales, illustrating diverse stories relating to the previous incarnations of the Buddha as Bodhisattava, a saintly being who is destined to become the Buddha. These elaborate sculptures and paintings stand in impressive grandeur in spite of withstanding the ravages of time. Amid the beautiful images and paintings are sculptures of Buddha, calm and serene in contemplation.

The cave temples and monasteries at Ellora, excavated out of the vertical face of an escarpment, are 26 km north of Aurangabad. Sculptors, inspired by Buddhism, Jainism and Hinduism, created elaborate rock carvings. Extending in a linear arrangement, the 34 caves contain Buddhist Chaityas or halls of worship, Viharas or monasteries and Hindu and Jain temples. Spanning a period of about 600 years between the 5th and 11th century A.D., the earliest excavation here is of the Dhumar Lena (Cave 29). The most imposing excavation is, without doubt, that of the magnificent Kailasa Temple (Cave 16) which is the largest monolithic structure in the world. Known as Verul in ancient times, it has continuously attracted pilgrims through the centuries to the present day.

Declared as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO since 1983, the paintings and sculptures of Ajanta and Ellora, considered masterpieces of Buddhist religious art, have had a great influence in the development of art in India. The creative use of colour and freedom of expression used in depicting human and animal forms makes the cave paintings at Ajanta one of the high watermarks of artistic creativity. The Ellora preserved as an artistic legacy that will continue to inspire and enrich the lives of generations to come. Not only is this cave complex a unique artistic creation and an excellent example of technological exploit but also, with its sanctuaries devoted to Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism, it illustrates the spirit of tolerance that was characteristic of ancient India.

提升越快 阻力越大

The faster be promoted, the greater resistance.不受磨不成佛

Without tribulations none can become Buddhas.透过考验 提升一步 犹如登山

Go through the test and you will promote a step, just like climbing.阴阳平衡规律

有正必有邪

有佛必有魔

According to the balanced Law of yin and yang, where there is righteousness, there must be evil counterpart and where there is a Buddha , there is a Demon.使命越大历炼越大 使命越大磨难越大 使命越大考验越大 The more important of the mission, the more trainings there will be. The more important of the mission, the more hardships there will be. The more important of the mission, the more tests there will be.你们灵山赴会前难以避免会有磨难考验。

It is unavoidable to go through the test and the trouble before you attend a Vulture Peak assembly.你们灵山赴会后难以避免会有磨难考验。

It is unavoidable to go through the test and the trouble after you attended a Vulture Peak assembly.因为你们要改变状态了因为你们要突破提升了Because your states will be changed.

The leaders of Ireland’s main Churches have released a report on the dialogue that they engaged in following their initial meetings with Northern Ireland’s five party leaders, entitled A time for courageous and compassionate leadership: Report on the Church Leaders’ Civil Society Dialogue Initiative.

The senior churchmen presented the report and its main findings to the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, the Rt Hon Karen Bradley MP, An Tánaiste Simon Coveney TD, and the party leaders attending the inter–party talks on Tuesday 14 May.

The initiative began in September 2018 when the Church Leaders invited the leaders of Northern Ireland’s main political parties to discuss the consequences of the political impasse. This was then followed by separate meetings in October between the Church Leaders, Secretary of State and Tánaiste.

Those involved in each of the autumn meetings agreed that it would be helpful if the Church Leaders’ dialogue between them could be opened up to the party’s locally–based MLAs along with some from wider Northern Ireland society.

Between December 2018 and February 2019, approximately 120 people attended facilitated discussions in Newry, Belfast, Ballymena and Derry–Londonderry. This included locally–based representatives from health and social care, policing, business, farming and agriculture, youth work, family support, women’s groups, those engaged in anti–poverty work and community development. Like many other similar gatherings, these meetings focused on the consequences of the political impasse and ways in which political leaders and civil society could work together for the common good. Two Church Leaders attended each regional meeting along with local church representatives and locally–based MLAs.

Releasing the report, the Rev Trevor Gribben, Clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church and Secretary to the Church Leaders’ Group (Ireland), said: “The Church Leaders welcomed the opportunity last week to meet with the Secretary of State, An Tánaiste and the party leaders during the inter–party talks last week. The Church Leaders wanted to encourage those involved in this fresh initiative, which they hope will lead to substantive progress over the next number of weeks. During the meeting they also shared with them the report’s key findings.

“In the report the Church Leaders say, ‘There is great value in people from different backgrounds, and different sectors, coming together to support each other recognising our collective responsibility for the common good. We have heard a strong message coming from our local communities that this is the kind of leadership people want, and need, to see at the present time.’”

“Acknowledging that the timing for the talks was not perfect, the Church Leaders said that they were aware of a growing sense of despair in communities at the lack of political movement on restoring devolution. Together, they hoped that this fresh initiative would lead to substantive progress and the establishment of a sustainable power–sharing executive that is built on balanced accommodation and focused on the common good. They added that this would require leadership that is courageous and compassionate.

“Having discussed the report with the inter–party talks participants and referenced the initiative in their various public statements following their meeting, the Church Leaders felt that it would be helpful if the report was shared more widely.”

The Church Leaders involved in the initiative, and who met with participants in the inter–party talks were:

- The Most Rev Dr Richard Clarke, Church of Ireland Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland;

- The Most Rev Eamon Martin, Catholic Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland;

- The Right Rev Dr Charles McMullen, Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland;

- The Rev William Davison, President of the Methodist Church in Ireland;

- The Rev Brian Anderson, President of the Irish Council of Churches; and

- The Rev Trevor Gribben, Clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church and Joint Secretary to the Church Leaders’ Group (Ireland).

Ar-Raheem

Allah calls Himself Ar-Raheem— The Bestower of Mercy, The Most

Compassionate— on 93 occasions in the Quran, 112 times in the

basmalah. Ar-Raheem is the One who bestows His continuous mercy

on all of creation and who bestows even more grace and greater

rewards in response to the good deeds of the believers!

The Most Compassionate, the Bestower of Mercy

Both raheem and rahmaan come from the root Raa-Haa-Meem,

which points to four main meanings. The first meaning is to have

gentleness and to love, the second is to have mercy. The third meaning

is to show favour, and the fourth meaning is to have all that is required

for beneficence.

This root appears 339 times in the Quran in nine derived forms.

Examples of these forms are turhamoona (“receive mercy”), ruhman

(in affection”), and ar-raahimeena (“[of]those who show mercy”).

Linguistically, raheem shows continuity or repetition (the ending

of –ee(m)). For example jameel means beautiful and kareem means

honourable or generous, which reflect characteristics or states.

Related to Ar-Rahmaan, Ar-Raheem refers to the action or the effect

of Allah’s intense mercy on creation, indicating how this mercy

encompasses creatures. Imagine a shower of blessings, and imagine

the shower as very intense and continuous. Allah is the intensely and

the continuously Merciful.

Ar-Raheem Himself says: He said, “I will ask forgiveness for you

from my Lord. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful

[Quran, 12:98] . . . [O Muhammad], inform My servants that it is I

who am the Forgiving, the Merciful [Quran, 15:49] and. . . And indeed,

your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful. [Quran, 26:9]

The merciful of the creation

Certain names Allah ‘azza wa jall uses only to describe Himself. He

says: Say: Invoke Allah or invoke Ar-Rahmaan, by whatever name

you invoke Him (it is the same), for to Him belong the Best names.

[Quran, 17:110]

www.UnderstandQuran.com 18

As for Allah’s name Ar-Raheem, Allah ( ) has described others

by it: Verily, there has come unto you a Messenger from amongst

yourselves. It grieves him that you should receive any injury or

difficulty. He (Muhammad) is anxious over you (to be rightly guided)

for the believers kind and merciful. [Quran 9:128]

Being kind to others is a blessing

Know that kind and compassionate treatment is liked by Ar-Raheem

and is in fact His blessing from Him to you. A person who is hardhearted

is deprived of this divine blessing and mercy. Aishah ( ) reported

that some Bedouins came to the Messenger of Allah ( ) and asked,

‘Do you kiss your children?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ They then said: ‘By

Allah, we do not kiss them.’ He then replied, ‘I cannot help you if Allah

has snatched kindness from your hearts.’ [Al-Bukharee, Muslim] So

open up your heart to others and constantly warm your heart with the

remembrance of Allah ( ).

How can you live by this name?

1. Obey Ar-Raheem, hold onto the Quran.

And He is Merciful (Raheem) to the believers [Quran, 33:43]. Allah (

) mentions ways for you in the Quran to receive His special mercy

as a believer. He says: and obey Allah and His Messenger so that

you all may receive Mercy [3:132]. This mercy is only reserved for

those who try their best to hold on to the guidelines, prohibitions, and

commandments mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah. And this is a

book, We have sent it down as one blessed, so follow it and fear Allah

so that you all may receive Mercy [6:155].

2. Strive for taqwa.

O you who have believed, have taqwa of Allah and believe in His

Messenger; He will [then] give you a double portion of His mercy

and make for you a light by which you will walk and forgive you;

and Allah is Forgiving and Merciful [Quran, 57:28]. Taqwa can be

described as consciousness which inspires you to be on guard against

wrong action and eager for actions which please Allah ( ) and to

www.UnderstandQuran.com 19

stay away from those actions which displease and anger him. Tips

to increase your taqwa are: be alert to whatever may divert you from

Allah, and be alert to your desires that may lead you to the forbidden.

Ascribe each success, material or spiritual, to Allah only, and long for

His pleasure in everything you do, big or small. Renew your emaan

by reflecting on Ar-Raheem’s creation and remember death by living

each day with the knowledge it can happen anytime.

3. Pray four units (rak’aat) of prayer before ‘asr.

The Prophet ( ) said: May Allah have mercy on one who prays

four raka’aat before the ‘asr Prayer [At-Tirmidhee].

4. Listen to the Quran attentively.

And when the Quran is recited, listen to it with attention, that you

may receive mercy [Quran, 7:204]. Have you noticed the effect on

your heart when you sit and listen to the Quran with your ears and

heart, with no distractions around you? The more you respect and

honour the Book of Allah, the more cure, guidance and mercy you

will receive through it.

5. Turn to Ar-Raheem.

Whenever Ar-Raheem gives you a trial, know that no one can give

you a way out but Him, so turn to Him as soon as hardship hits you.

And if Allah should touch you with adversity, there is no remover

of it except Him; and if He intends for you good, then there is no

repeller of His bounty. He causes it to reach whom He wills of His

servants. And He is the Forgiving, the Merciful [Quran, 10:107]. No

matter what sin you commit, Allah ( ) forgives you if you repent of

it. That’s the beauty of Al-Ghafoor Ar-Raheem.

6. Ask Ar-Raheem for compassion.

The Prophet ( ) said: He who is not merciful to our young (people)

and who shows no respect to our elderly is not one of us. [AtTirmidhee] Ask Allah ( ) to bless you with a soft heart and to enable

you to feel compassion towards your relatives, friends, and the whole

Muslim nation. How many do not feel responsible or attached to the

ummah? The Prophet ( ) said: The similitude of believers in regard

to mutual love, affection, fellow-feeling is that of one body; when any

limb of it aches, the whole body aches, because of sleeplessness and

fever. [Muslim]

O Allah, Ar-Raheem, we know that You bestow Your mercy perfectly

and continuously on all that exists. Guide us to hold onto Your book

and the sunnah so we may attain your special mercy and adorn

our actions, speech, and thoughts with a deep sense of taqwa. Make

us turn to You at all times, asking for Your Mercy, and make us

compassionate so we will enter through the gates of Your paradise

by Your mercy, ameen!

And Allah knows best.
