“The British are among the worst idlers in the world. We work among the lowest hours, we retire early and our productivity is poor. Whereas Indian children aspire to be doctors or businessmen, the British are more interested in football and pop music”

That's according to compassionate conservatives Kwasi Kwarteng, Priti Patel, Dominic Raab, Chris Skidmore and Liz Truss (2012) in their book en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Britannia_Unchained

But are the British really the worst idlers in the world? Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng’s early characterisation of the UK workforce does not entirely stand up to scrutiny argues Sarah O'Connor twitter.com/sarahoconnor_/status/1572149750606233601

Quan Yin... the Goddess of Compassion and Mercy

Quan Yin is one of the most universally beloved of deities in the Buddhist tradition. Also known as Kuan Yin, Quan'Am (Vietnam), Kannon (Japan), and Kanin (Bali), She is the embodiment of compassionate loving kindness. As the Bodhisattva of Compassion, She hears the cries of all beings. Quan Yin enjoys a strong resonance with the Christian Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and the Tibetan goddess Tara.

In many images she is shown carrying the pearls of illumination. Often Quan Yin is shown pouring a stream of healing water, the "Water of Life," from a small vase. With this water devotees and all living things are blessed with physical and spiritual peace. She holds a sheaf of ripe rice or a bowl of rice seed as a metaphor for fertility and sustenance. The dragon, an ancient symbol for high spirituality, wisdom, strength, and divine powers of transformation, is a common motif found in combination with the Goddess of Mercy.

Sometimes Kuan Yin is represented as a many armed figure, with each hand either containing a different cosmic symbol or expressing a specific ritual position, or mudra. This characterizes the Goddess as the source and sustenance of all things. Her cupped hands often form the Yoni Mudra, symbolizing the womb as the door for entry to this world through the universal female principle.

Quan Yin, as a true Enlightened One, or Bodhisattva, vowed to remain in the earthly realms and not enter the heavenly worlds until all other living things have completed their own enlightenment and thus become liberated from the pain-filled cycle of birth, death, and rebirth.

There are numerous legends that recount the miracles which Quan Yin performs to help those who call on Her. Like Artemis, She is a virgin Goddess who protects women, offers them a religious life as an alternative to marriage, and grants children to those who desire them.

The Goddess of Mercy is unique among the heavenly hierarchy in that She is so utterly free from pride or vengefulness that She remains reluctant to punish even those to whom a severe lesson might be appropriate. Individuals who could be sentenced to dreadful penance in other systems can attain rebirth and renewal by simply calling upon Her graces with utter and absolute sincerity. It is said that, even for one kneeling beneath the executioner's sword already raised to strike, a single heartfelt cry to Bodhisattva Quan Yin will cause the blade to fall shattered to the ground.

The many stories and anecdotes featuring this Goddess serve to convey the idea of an enlightened being who embodies the attributes of an all pervasive, all consuming, unwavering loving compassion and who is accessible to everyone. Quan Yin counsels us by Her actions to cultivate within ourselves those particular refined qualities that all beings are said to naturally possess in some vestigial form.

Contemplating the Goddess of Mercy involves little dogma or ritual. The simplicity of this gentle being and Her standards tends to lead Her devotees towards becoming more compassionate and loving themselves. A deep sense of service to all fellow beings naturally follows any devotion to the Goddess.

Guanyin (Chinese: 觀音; pinyin: Guānyīn; Wade-Giles: kuan-yin, Japanese: Kannon, Korean: Gwan-eum, Vietnamese: Quan Âm) is the bodhisattva associated with compassion as venerated by East Asian Buddhists, usually as a female. The name Guanyin is short for Guanshiyin (觀世音, pinyin: Guānshìyīn, Wade-Giles: kuan-shih yin) which means (hola estudiantes de la oxford)buddha god of mercy (not the game) "Observing the Sounds (or Cries) of the World". It is generally accepted (in the Chinese community) that Guanyin originated as the Sanskrit Avalokiteśvara (अवलोकितेश्वर), which is her male form. Commonly known in English as the Goddess of Mercy. Guanyin is also revered by Chinese Daoists (Taoists) as an Immortal.

What does Islam mean?

What does Islam mean? 1. Islamic belief: Islam is an Arabic word, it means that you totally surrender to God, and worship Him only. Here also I must explain what does worship means? It doesn't mean that you only pray, its meaning is much much wider, to worship God is that you look at Him as your ONLY master, no other master controlling you, so He is the ONLY one you are loyal to , He is the ONLY One you rely on, He is the ONLY one you fear, He is the ONLY one who judges you and puts rules for you, He is the axis your life rotates on, why? because He is our Creator, He is the Creator of the Universe and Creator of everything, He is the One who manages the Universe, He is the strong, the compassionate the merciful, He knows everything, He can do everything. He is the One who controls the Universe. How did we know that? God sent prophets to us to teach us this and to tell us the laws He gave for us to go along our life, we will be accounted on this in the Hereafter. Don't think that the beginning of Islam was only since Muhammad (Peace be upon him), no that's wrong, Islam began from the beginning of creation, God created Adam (Peace be upon him) and Adam was a Muslim, because he really worshipped God only, and began to have a family, all the family were Muslims,and the life went on, then people began to deviate from this meaning and forgot God, began to worship idols, God sent the prophets: Noah, Hud, Saleh, Abraham,Moses, David, Solomon, Jesus,Muhammad and many other prophets (Peace be upon them all), the mission of all these prophets was to restore people back to the right way of God, and to remind them of their reality. But at the end all these prophets are not gods, they don't have any divine nature,because Allah is the ONLY God,so when Jews put very wrong concepts of God that made Him like a child they are deviating from concept of worshipping God, because they are insulting Him, and when Christians say that Jesus is God or God's son, or that God is one in Trinity, they are really deviating from the concept , and when they make their priests invent rules for them with no evidence from what God said or what His prophets said, they also are deviating from the concept of worshipping God. We in Islam refuse all these forms, if someone said that Muhammad (Peace be upon him) is our God, he is a disbeliever, God is the ONLY God, If an Immam said a Fatwa, he must give his evidence on this Fatwa, he is not obeyed blindly, our standard is what Allah and His prophet told us (because the Prophet is the one whom God sent not because he has a divine nature because he hasn't). This is generally the Islamic belief. 2. Islamic morals: God ordered us to be merciful, treat people well, help people, He recommended us to treat our parents well, and to keep always on helping them. 23. Thy Lord has commanded that ye worship none but HIM, and that ye show kindness to parents. If one or both of them attain old age with thee, never say to them as much as ugh nor reproach them, but always address them with kindly speech. 24. And lower them the wing of humility out of tenderness. And say, `My Lord, have mercy on them even as they nourished me when I was a little child.' (Holy Quran 17:23-24) even if they were not Muslims we must treat them well but we don't obey them if they ordered us to disobey God. 15. And if they contend with thee to make thee set up equals with ME concerning which thou hast no knowledge, obey them not, but be a kind companion to them in worldly affairs, (Holy Quran 31:15) God ordered us to keep always in contact with our relatives God said: 36. And worship ALLAH and associate naught with HIM, and show kindness to parents, and to kindred (Holy Quran 4:36) Also the Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: “ He/She who believes in Allah , the Almighty and Day of Judgment , must communicate , be good, courteous and kind to his kith and kin or relatives.” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim) Also we are also recommended to treat the neighbors well, even if they were not Muslims and even if they treated us badly as God said: and to the neighbour who is a kinsman and the neighbour who is a stranger (Holy Quran 4:36) Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: “(Arch Angel) Gbriel , PBUH, pressed on reminding me with the right of the neighbor until I thought he is going to consider him an heir ( of mine) .” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim) He also says: “ The best of neighbor s in the sight of Allah, the Almighty, is the one who is best to his neighbor”.(Narrated by Tirmithee) God also told us to take care of orphans as in the same verse and orphans There was a very severe punishment to those who take money of orphans as God said: 10. Surely they who devour the property of the orphans unjustly, only swallow fire into their bellies, and they shall burn in a blazing fire. (Quran 4:10) God ordered us to be completely fair with people even if I saw two people having a problem, one of them is Muslim, the other is non Muslim, and I found the right with the non-Muslim, I must judge for the non-Muslim. 135. O ye who believe ! be strict in observing justice and be witnesses for ALLAH, even though it be against yourselves or against your parents or kindred. Whether he, against whom witness is borne, be rich or poor, ALLAH is more regardful of them both than you are. Therefore follow not your low desires that you may be able to act equitably. And if you hide the truth or evade it, then know that ALLAH is Well-Aware of what you do. (Quran 4:135) God ordered us also not to do adultery except with our wives, because it is not a mess, and because it destroys the society and makes people deviate and spoil, that's why God, ordered us to take all the reasons to prevent this to happen, so He ordered women to wear Hijab which covers their body and heads so as not arise sexual desire in men, and it is also a protection for the woman from being raped or being annoyed by bad men. It makes women appear in a respectful way, their body is not something public seen by all people, it is only for the one she accepted as her husband. He ordered them when talking with men, not to talk in a way that arises their sexual desire but to talk in a serious way. 31. And say to the believing women that they restrain their looks and guard their private parts, and that they display not their beauty or their embellishment except that which is apparent thereof, and that they draw their head-coverings over their bosoms (Quran 24:31) So be not soft in speech, lest he, in whose heart is a disease, should feel tempted; and speak decent words. (Quran 33:32) As God ordered women to cover their body, he ordered men not to look at women, because this arises their sexual desire, and may lead them to adultery, or at least may lead them go astray from their duties in this life. 30. Say to the believing men that they restrain their looks and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Surely, ALLAH is Well-Aware of what they do. (Holy Quran 24:30) This is really one of the major problems the societies in the West face. God ordered us not to lie or to promise with something and don't do, Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said that these are the properties of hypocrites. 119. O ye who believe ! fear ALLAH and be with the truthful.(Quran 9:119) and fulfill the covenant; for the covenant shall be questioned about. 35. And give full measure when you measure and weigh with a right balance; that is best and most commendable in the end.(Quran 17:34-35) 70. O ye who believe ! Fear ALLAH and say the straightforward word. 71. HE will set right you actions for you and forgive you your sins. And whoso obeys ALLAH and HIS Messenger shall, surely, attain a supreme triumph.( Quran 33:70-71) God ordered us to say good words and avoid bad words and emphasized much on this because the slip of the tongue may cause many problems. 24. Dost thou not see how ALLAH sets forth a parable of a good word ? It is like a good tree, whose root is firm and whose branches reach into heaven ? 25. It brings forth its fruit at all times by the command of its Lord. And ALLAH sets forth parables for men that they may be reminded. 26. And the case of an evil word, is like that of an evil tree, which is uprooted from above the earth and has no stability. (Quran 14:24-26) God ordered us not to be arrogant but to be modest. 37. And walk not in the earth haughtily, for thou canst not thus rend the earth, nor canst thou reach the mountains in height. (Quran 17:37) 63. And the true servants of the Gracious God are those who walk on the earth humbly and when the ignorant address them, they avoid them gracefully by saying, `Peace !' (Quran 25:63) Finally God orders us to do everything good and avoid everything bad. 90. Verily, ALLAH enjoins justice, and the doing of good to others; and giving like kindred; and forbids indecency and manifest evil and transgression. HE admonishes you that you may take heed. (Quran 16:90) 3. Islamic pillars: They are five: 1. Witnessing that Allah is the only God and that Muhammad (Peace be upon him) is His messenger: as I explained in the beginning. 2. Praying: We pray to God five times a day in the mosques, from the benefits of praying: a. Having communication with God who created us b. Meeting with Muslims periodically every day, connecting with each other, which strengthens the Islamic society. 3. Zakat: Every mature able Muslim pays 2.5% of his income to help in building Islamic society, this is the minimum, God promised us with high rewards for paying more and more. 276. ALLAH will blot out interest and will cause charity to increase. And ALLAH loves not anyone who is a confirmed disbeliever and an arch-sinner. (Quran 2:276) 4. Fasting: Every healthy mature able Muslim must fast Ramadan (one of the Islamic months), all Muslims fast together in this month by stop eating and drinking along the day, they begin fasting at the dawn, they have breakfast at the Sunset. This really builds the Muslim character, trains him to control his desire and his passion, besides when all Muslims fast together, this gives a beautiful picture of the Muslims being uniform, it also makes the rich feel the hunger and thrusts of poor and motivates them to help the poor. 5. Finally, the pilgrimage: Every healthy able Muslim must do it once in his life. It is the annual Muslim conference where about 2 million Muslims meet in Mecca leaving their countries being at rest their answering God's call, wearing simple clothes, declaring their total obedience to God. The rites of the Hajj include circling the Kaaba seven times and going seven times between the hillocks of Safa and Marwa, as Hagar did during her search for water. Then the pilgrims stand together in Arafat and ask God for what they wish and for His forgiveness, in what is often thought of as a preview of the Day of Judgment. The end of the Hajj is marked by a festival, Eid Al-Adha, which is celebrated with prayers. This, and Eid al-Fitr, a feast-day commemorating the end of Ramadan, are the two annual festivals of the Muslim calendar.

Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA

Everyone keeps asking me why it is that I have decided to start eating meat again. It had been well over a decade of my life that I abstained from meat. Was it the taste? No. I have always found meat to be delicious. For the last few years, I have said that I would only eat what I could kill myself. So since I've gone fishing, that meant fish was ok to eat. But looking into the eyes of a cute little cow, and trying to kill it for a meal? That just seemed too hard for me to fathom.

Then I read The Omnivore's Dilemma, by Michael Pollan. The book is a great read for anyone who is interested in food politics and ethics. The book's premise is to follow the social, economic and ethical impact of 4 meals in society. The first being a meal from McDonald's, the last being a meal where Pollan hunts for his own meat, and gathers wild vegetables and mushrooms.

Some people who have read the book walk away from it and decide to become vegetarian. For me, I read the book and realized that it was ok to eat meat. The choice to be vegetarian for me had always been for ethical reasons, but people kept pointing out that the choice based on ethics is contradictory. How could I be OK with eating fish, but abstain from the meat of cows or pigs? And the one I got all the time, "What about plants? Don't they feel pain as well." Well, yes, true.

But the question that came up in my mind was, "Do you owe moral consideration to animals that can feel pain?" For me the answer was, and still is, yes. Animals need to be treated with the same decency and lack of suffering that humans should be treated with as well. That is why Whole Foods has come up with a rather interesting marketing tactic, (if not eventually a standard) for the Animal Compassionate Program, which requires the "animal's physical, emotional and behavioral needs" to be met. Sadly however, Whole Foods has yet to find producers who met these standards.

In Pollan's book he discusses the notion of ethical meat farming, but really the struggle for these farmers is the stringent, irrelevant and incredibly burdensome requirements of agencies like the FDA. We can treat animals with compassion and without suffering, but it simply isn't "up to code" by the FDA's standards to do so.

So what to do? Move to Europe where the meat industry is regulated in a different way? Possibly. For the time being, I am fascinated by the social elements of eating, and that is what I am doing with my 30 days of pork exploration. Being a vegetarian is exclusionary. Believe me, I know what it is like to get weird looks from grandmothers, boyfriend's parents and co-workers when you say you don't eat meat. You suddenly become less involved in social traditions because you don't know what an In and Out Burger tastes like, or what the big deal is about the turkey everyone is eating at Thanksgiving. I put many people out (who tolerated and respected my food choices with extreme kindness) like my dad who would always make a special meal for me, but who was also so excited about his meat dishes that I couldn't try.

So for me, to eat meat is to come back into a social space of sharing experiences with others, and place that priority of participation over the ethics of eating. Don't get me wrong. I'll pick grass-fed, free-range, hormone-free meat any day over the mass produced variety. And if the animal was treated with compassion, even better. But for right now, I want, and need to explore the ritual of eating without the restraints that I have placed on myself for the last 12 years. I may go back to being vegetarian, I may not. Who knows? But I can tell you that this grilled pear and bacon sandwich from Arlequin in Hayes Valley hit the spot for my Saturday mid-day meal.

Address by H.E. Dr. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. President of the Islamic Republic of Iran before the 66th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. (New York - 23 September 2011).

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

"All praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Universe, and peace and blessing be upon our Master and Prophet, Mohammad, and his pure Household, and his noble Companions and on all divine messengers"

"Oh, God, hasten the arrival of Imam Al- Mahdi and grant him good health and victory and make us his followers and those who attest to his rightfulness"

***********************************************************

Mr. President,

Excellencies,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am grateful to the Almighty Allah who granted me, once more, the opportunity to appear before this world assembly. I have the pleasure to express my sincere thanks to H.E. Joseph Deiss, president of the sixty-fifth session for his tremendous efforts during his tenure. I also would like to congratulate H.E Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser on his election as the president of sixty-sixth session of the General Assembly and wish him all success.

Let me seize the moment to pay tribute to all those who lost their lives in the past year, particularly to the victims of the tragic famine in Somalia and the devastating flood in Pakistan and especially the earthquake and the ensuing explosions in the nuclear power plant in Japan. I urge everyone to intensify their assistance and aid to the affected populations in these countries.

Over the past years, I spoke about different global issues, and the need to introduce fundamental changes in the current international order.

- Today, considering the international developments, I will try to analyze the present situation from a different angle.

- As you all know the dominance and superiority of human beings over other creatures, lie in the very nature and the truth of humankind which is a divine gift and a manifestation of the divine spirit including:

- faith in God, who is the ever-lasting creator and planner of the entire universe.

- Showing compassion to others, generosity, justice-seeking, and having integrity both in words and in deeds.

- The quest for dignity to reach the pinnacles of perfection, the aspiration to elevate one’s material and spiritual status, and the longing to realize liberty;

- Defying oppression, corruption, and discrimination in trying to support the oppressed;

- Seeking happiness, and lasting prosperity and security for all;

- These are some of the manifestations of common divine and human attributes which can clearly be seen in the historical aspirations of human beings as reflected in the heritage of our search for art and literary works both in prose and poetry, and in the socio-cultural and political movements of human beings in the course of history;

- All divine prophets and social reformers invited human beings to tread on this righteous path;

- God has given dignity to humankind to elevate his status to assume his successor role on Earth;

Dear Colleagues and friends;

- It is vividly clear that despite all historical achievements, including creation of the United-Nations, which was a product of untiring struggles and efforts of free-minded and justice-seeking individuals as well as the international cooperation, human societies are yet far from fulfilling their noble desires and aspirations;

- Most nations of the world are unhappy with the current international circumstances;

- And despite the general longing and aspiration to promote peace, progress, and fraternity, wars, mass-murder, widespread poverty, and socioeconomic and political crises continue to infringe upon the rights and sovereignty of nations, leaving behind irreparable damage worldwide;

- Approximately, three billion people of the world live on less than 2.5 dollars a day, and over a billion people live without having even one sufficient meal on a daily basis;

- Forty-percent of the poorest world populations only share five percent of the global income, while twenty percent of the richest people share seventy-five percent of the total global income.

- More than twenty thousand innocent and destitute children die every day in the world because of poverty.

- In the United States, eighty percent of financial resources are controlled by ten percent of its population, while only twenty percent of these resources belong to the ninety percent of the population.

- What are the causes and reasons behind these inequalities? How can bone remedy such injustice?

- The rulers of the global management circles divide the social life from ethics and spirituality while claiming the situation is the outcome of the pursuit of the path of divine prophets or the vulnerability of nations or the ill performance of a few groups or individuals. They claim that only their views and approaches can save the human society.

Dear Colleagues and friends;

- Wouldn't you think that the root cause of the problems must be sought in the prevailing international order, or the way the world is governed?

I would like to draw your kind attention to the following questions:

- Who abducted forcefully tens of millions of people from their homes in Africa and other regions of the world during the dark period of slavery , making them a victim of their materialistic greed.

- Who imposed colonialism for over four centuries upon this world. Who occupied lands and massively plundered resources of other nations, destroyed talents, and alienated languages, cultures and identities of nations?

- Who triggered the first and second world wars, that left seventy millions killed and hundreds of millions injured or homeless. Who created the wars in Korean peninsula and in Vietnam?

- Who imposed, through deceits and hypocrisy, the Zionism and over sixty years of war, homelessness, terror and mass murder on the Palestinian people and on countries of the region?

- Who imposed and supported for decades military dictatorship and totalitarian regimes on Asian, African, and Latin American nations.

- Who used nuclear bomb against defenseless people, and stockpiled thousands of warheads in their arsenals?

- Whose economies rely on waging wars and selling arms?

- Who provoked and encouraged Saddam Hussein to invade and impose an eight-year war on Iran, and who assisted and equipped him to deploy chemical weapons against our cities and our people.

- Who used the mysterious September 11 incident as a pretext to attack Afghanistan and Iraq , killing, injuring, and displacing millions in two countries with the ultimate goal of bringing into its domination the Middle East and its oil resources?

- Who nullified the Breton Woods system by printing trillions of dollars without the backing of gold reserves or equivalent currency? A move that triggered inflation worldwide and was intended to prey on the economic gains of other nations.

- Which country’s military spending exceeds annually a thousand billion dollars, more than the military budgets of all countries of the world combined?

- Which governments are the most indebted ones in the world?

- Who dominates the policy-making establishments of the world economy?

- Who are responsible for the world economic recession, and are imposing the consequences on America, Europe and the world in general?

- Which governments are always ready to drop thousands of bombs on other countries, but ponder and hesitate to provide aid to famine-stricken people in Somalia or in other places?

- Who are the ones dominating the Security Council which is ostensibly responsible for safeguarding the international security?

- There exist tens of other similar questions. Of course, the answers are clear.

- The majority of nations and governments of the world have had no role in the creation of the current global crises, and as a matter of fact, they were themselves the victims of such policies.

- It is as lucid as daylight that the same slave masters and colonial powers that once instigated the two world wars have caused widespread misery and disorder with far-reaching effects across the globe since then.

Dear Colleagues and Friends;

- Do these arrogant powers really have the competence and ability to run or govern the world. Is it acceptable that they call themselves the sole defender of freedom, democracy, and human rights, while they militarily attack and occupy other countries?

- Can the flower of democracy blossom from NATO’s missiles, bombs and guns?

Ladies and Gentlemen;

- If some European countries still use the Holocaust, after six decades, as the excuse to pay fine or ransom to the Zionists, should it not be an obligation upon the slave masters or colonial powers to pay reparations to the affected nations?

- If the damage and losses of the period of slavery and colonialism were indeed compensated, what would happen to the manipulators and behind-the-scene political powers in the United States and in Europe? Would there remain any gaps between the North and the South?

- If only half of military expenditures of the United States and its allies in NATO was shifted to help solve the economic problems in their own countries, would they be witnessing any symptom of the economic crisis?

- What would happen, if the same amount was allocated to poor nations?

- What is the justification for the presence of hundreds of US military and intelligence bases in different parts of the world, including 268 bases in Germany, 124 in Japan, 87 in South Korea, 83 in Italy, 45 in the United-Kingdom, and 21 in Portugal? Does this mean anything other than military occupation?

- Don’t the bombs deployed in the said bases undermine the security of other nations?

Ladies and Gentlemen;

- The main question is the quest for the root cause of such attitudes.

- The prime reason should be sought in the beliefs and tendencies of the establishment.

- An assembly of people in contradiction with the inner human instincts and disposition who also have no faith in God and in the path of the divine prophets, replace their lust for power and materialistic ends with heavenly values.

- To them, only power and wealth prevail, and every attempt must bring into focus these sinister goals.

- Oppressed nations have no hope to restore or protect their legitimate rights against these powers.

- These powers seek their progress, prosperity and dignity through imposing poverty, humiliation and annihilation to others.

- They consider themselves superior to others, enjoying special privileges and concessions. They have no respect for others and easily violate the rights of all nations and governments.

- They proclaim themselves as the indisputable custodians of all governments and nations through intimidation, recourse to threat and force, and abuse the international mechanisms. They simply break all the internationally recognized regulations.

- They insist on imposing their lifestyle and beliefs on others.

- They officially support racism.

- They weaken countries through military intervention, and destroy their infrastructures, in order to plunder their resources by making them all the more dependent.

- They sow the seeds of hate and hostility among nations and people of different pursuits, in order to prevent them from fulfilling their goals of development and progress.

- All cultures, identities, lives, values and wealth of nations, women, youth, families as well as the wealth of nations are sacrificed to their imperialistic tendencies and their inclination to enslave and captivate others.

- Hypocrisy and deceit are allowed in order to secure their interests and imperialistic goals. Drug- trafficking and killing of innocent human beings are also allowed in pursuit of such diabolic goals. Despite NATO’s presence in the occupied Afghanistan, there has been a dramatic increase in the production of illicit drugs there.

- They tolerate no question or criticism, and instead of presenting a reason for their violations, they always put themselves in the position of a claimant.

- By using their imperialistic media network which is under the influence of colonialism they threaten anyone who questions the Holocaust and the September 11 event with sanctions and military action.

- Last year, when the need to form a fact-finding team to undertake a thorough investigation concerning the hidden elements involved in September 11 incident was brought up; an idea also endorsed by all independent governments and nations as well as by the majority in the United States, my country and myself came under pressure and threat by the government of the United States.

- Instead of assigning a fact-finding team, they killed the main perpetrator and threw his body into the sea.

- Would it not have been reasonable to bring to justice and openly bring to trial the main perpetrator of the incident in order to identify the elements behind the safe space provided for the invading aircraft to attack the twin world trade towers?

- Why should it not have been allowed to bring him to trial to help recognize those who launched terrorist groups and brought wars and other miseries into the region?

- Is there any classified information that must be kept secret?

- They view Zionism as a sacred notion and ideology. Any question concerning its very foundation and history is condemned by them as an unforgivable sin. However they endorse and allow sacrileges and insult against beliefs of other divine religions.

Dear Colleagues and Friends;

- Real freedom, justice,, dignity, well being, and lasting security are the rights of all nations.

- These values can neither be achieved by reliance on the current inefficient system of world governance, nor through the invasion of the world by arrogant powers and the gun barrels of NATO forces.

- These values could only be realized through independence and recognition of others’ rights and through harmony and cooperation.

- Is there any way to address the problems and challenges besetting the world by using the prevailing international mechanisms and tools to help humanity achieve the long-standing aspiration of peace, security and equality?

- All those who tried to introduce reforms whilst preserving the existing norms and tendencies have failed. The valuable efforts made by the Non-Aligned movement and Group 77 and Group15 as well as by some prominent individuals have failed to bring fundamental changes.

- Governance and management of the world require fundamental reforms.

- What should be done now?

Dear Colleagues and Friends;

- Efforts must be made with a firm resolve and through collective cooperation to map out a new plan, on the basis of principles and the very foundation of universal human values such as Monotheism, justice, freedom, love and the quest for happiness.

- The idea of creation of the United Nations remains a great and historical achievement of mankind. Its importance must be appreciated and its capacities must be used to the extent possible for our noble goals.

- We should not allow this organization which is the reflection of the collective will and shared aspiration of the community of nations, to deviate from its main course and play into the hands of the world powers.

- Conducive ground must be prepared to ensure collective participation and involvement of nations in an effort to promote lasting peace and security.

- Shared and collective management of the world must be achieved in its true sense, and based on the underlying principles enshrined in the international law. Justice must serve as the criterion and the basis for all international decisions and actions.

- All of us should acknowledge the fact that there is no other way than the shared and collective management of the world in order to put an end to the present disorders, tyranny, and discriminations worldwide.

- This is indeed the sole way to prosperity and welfare of human society which is an established and vivid truth.

- While acknowledging the above truth, one should note that acknowledgement alone is not enough. We must believe in it and spare no effort toward its realization.

Dear Colleagues and Friends;

- Shared and collective management of the world is the legitimate right of all nations, and we as their representatives, have an obligation to defend their rights. Although some powers continuously try to frustrate all international efforts aimed at promoting collective cooperation, we must, however, strengthen our belief in achieving the perceived goal of establishing a shared and collective cooperation to run the world.

- The United Nations was created to make effective participation of all nations in international decision-making processes, possible.

- We all know that this goal has not yet been fulfilled because of the absence of justice in the current management structures and mechanisms of the UN.

- The composition of the Security Council is unjust and inequitable. Therefore, changes including the restructuring of the United Nations are considered the basic demands of the nations that must be addressed by the General Assembly.

- During last year session, I emphasized the importance of this issue and called for the designation of the current decade as the decade of shared and collective Global Management.

- I would like to reiterate again my proposal. I am sure that through international cooperation, diligence and efforts by committed world leaders and governments and through insisting on the realization of justice and the support of all other nations, we can expedite the building of a common bright future.

- This movement is certainly on its rightful path of creation, ensuring a promising future for humanity.

- A future that will be built when humanity initiates to trend the path of the divine prophets and the righteous under the leadership of Imam al-Mahdi, the Ultimate Savior of mankind and the inheritor to all divine messengers and leaders and to the pure generation of our great Prophet.

- The creation of a supreme and ideal society with the arrival of a perfect human being who is a true and sincere lover of all human beings, is the guaranteed promise of Allah.

- He will come alongside with Jesus Christ to lead the freedom and justice lovers to eradicate tyranny and discrimination, and promote knowledge, peace, justice freedom and love across the world. He will present to every single individual all the beauties of the world and all good things which bring happiness for humankind.

- Today nations have been awakened. With the increase in public awareness, they no longer succumb to oppressions and discriminations.

- The world is now witnessing more than ever, the widespread awakening in Islamic lands, in Asia, Europe, and America. These movements are ever expanding their spirit everyday and influence the pursuit of the realization of justice, freedom and the creation of a better tomorrow.

- Our great nation stands ready to join hands with other nations to march on this beautiful path in harmony and in line with the shared aspirations of mankind.

- Let us salute love, freedom, justice, wisdom, and the bright future that awaits humankind.

Thank you.

Can Women Travel WithOut A Mahram

In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful

Generally, it is impermissible for a woman to travel the distance of three days (equivalent to 48 miles) without her husband or a Mahram (unmarriageable kin) accompanying her.

There are many clear narrations of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) in this regard.

1) Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said: “Let no woman travel for more than three days unless her husband or a Mahram is with her.” (Sahih Muslim)

2) Sayyiduna Abd Allah ibn Umar (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said: “A woman must not travel for three days except with a Mahram.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 1036 & Sahih Muslim)

3) Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said: “It is unlawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the last day that she travels the distance of one day and one night without a Mahram accompanying her.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 1038)

4) Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said: “'A woman must not travel except with a Mahram and a man must not enter upon her except if she has a Mahram.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 1763)

Imam Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) states in his monumental commentary of Sahih Muslim:

“There are many such narrations that assert the impermissibility of a woman travelling without a Mahram. These narrations vary in their wordings. The narration of Ibn Abbas in Sahih al-Bukhari says that a woman must not travel without a Mahram, but it adds nothing else. However, the other narrations, in Sahih al-Bukhari and elsewhere, mention lengths of journeys for which a Mahram is required - some of the narrations specify three days, some two, some one, and some even less.”

Imam Nawawi (Allah have mercy on him) also mentions that the difference found in these narrations is due to the different questioners and the places wherein the answers were given to them. al-Bayhaqi said: “It is as though the messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) was asked regarding travelling for three days without a Mahram, and he refused. He was then asked about her travelling for two days, and regarding one day, etc and each narrator related from him what he heard.” (See: Commentary of Sahih Muslim by Imam Nawawi, 1015)

According to the Hanafi Ijtihad, the distance that is considered here is three days and three nights, for the narrations mentioning three days & three nights have reached the level of certainty. All the Companions who narrated other than three days also narrate the distance of three days and three nights. The narrations that mention two or one day will be restricted to specific circumstances, such as the fear of more fitna. Hence, they (Hanafi School) considers the narrations that mention three days & three nights as the basis of prohibition. (Zafar Ahmad al-Tahanawi, I’la al-Sunan, V. 10, P. 11)

It must be remarked here that this refers to the distance usually covered by walking or on an animal in three days & three nights (with the usual breaks for resting and eating). Therefore, the restriction of travelling with a Mahram applies if the distance of the journey exceeds this, even if the journey itself is accomplished in a shorter time.

The scholars have differed on the length of this distance. Many scholars are of the opinion that it is 16 Farsakh, and each Farsakh equals three miles, thus totalling to 48 miles. (See: Faydh al-Bari ala Sahih al-Bukhari, 2/397)

Thus, the Hanafi Fuqaha are very clear, in that a woman must not travel to the distance of three days without her husband or Mahram accompanying her.

The great Hanafi Jurist, Imam al-Kasani (Allah have mercy on him) states: “One of the conditions for the permissibility of a woman travelling for Hajj is that she is accompanied by her husband or a Mahram. If neither of them is accompanying her, then Hajj will not be obligatory.

Our (Hanafi school) proof is what Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) that he said: “Verily, a woman must no travel for Hajj except that her Mahram is accompanying her”. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) also said: “A woman must not travel except that her Mahram or Husband is with her”. Also, a woman is unsafe if her husband or Mahram is not accompanying her, and this is the reason why it is even impermissible for her to travel on her own (meaning, not in the company of a stranger, m), and this fear (of their safety, m) is increased when they are in a group. This is the reason why it is impermissible for a man to be in seclusion (khalwa) with a non-Mahram woman even if she has another woman accompanying her.” (Bada’i al-Sana’i, 2/1230)

It is stated in al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya:

“One of the conditions for a woman, whether young or old, to a able to travel for Hajj is that she is accompanied by her Mahram if the distance between her and Makkah is of three days. If the travelling distance is less than that, then she will perform Hajj without her Mahram.” (al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya, 219)

Imam al-Haskafi (may Allah have mercy on him) also states the same ruling in his renowned Durr al-Mukhtar, on which Allama Ibn Abidin (may Allah have mercy on him) commentates with the following:

“It is impermissible for a woman to travel the distance of three days and three nights. However, it will be permissible for her to travel the distance which is less than that without a Mahram because of need. It is reported from Abu Hanifa and Abu Yusuf (Allah have mercy on them both) that they disliked the travelling of a woman on herself even to the travel distance of one day and one night, and the Fatwa should be on this opinion due to the widespread immorality. This is also affirmed by the Hadith recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim: “It is Impermissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the last day that she travels the distance of one day and one night except with a Mahram accompanying her”. However, it is stated in al-Fath (fath al-Qadir of Ibn al-Humam, m): “When the relied upon opinion is the first (i.e., distance of three days and three nights, m), the husband does not have a right to prevent her from performing Hajj if the distance between her and Makkah is less than three days.” (Radd al-Muhtar ala al-Durr al-Mukhtar, 2/465)

The above excerpts from the major reference books in the Hanafi School clearly indicate the impermissibility of a woman travelling without her Mahram or Husband. So much so, that we see Ibn Abidin (A major authority) stating that due to widespread immorality and corruption in his time, a woman should not even be allowed to travel the distance of one day (even though, the fatwa is on three days and three nights/48 miles). If that was the case in his time, what would the ruling be in our age?

It should be remembered here, that the basis for this ruling is not an evil assumption about the woman and her manners, as some people unreasonably think, but it is to take care of her reputation, dignity and safety. It is to protect her from the desires of those who have diseased hearts, from the assault of an immoral person or a thief.

Some contemporary people argue that travelling in modern times have changed from how it was in the time of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace). It is incumbent upon us to look at travelling in our time. It is not like how travelling was in the past. It is not filled with the dangers of the waterless deserts, encounters with thieves, highway robbers, etc. Now travelling is by various modes of transportation that usually gather large amounts of people at a time, such as planes, cars, buses, ships, etc…Thus, this provides plenty of confidence and reliability, removing feelings of fear for the woman, because she will not be by herself in any place, and the principle of Islamic Jurisprudence states: “Rulings change due to the changing of times”. Also, some classical scholars have made exceptions with regards to the impermissibility of women travelling in that they may travel in a group, or if there is no fear or risk of Fitna, it would be permissible.

The above understanding is incorrect due to many reasons, and the permissibility of women travelling without a Mahram can not be justified on its basis.

Firstly, the principle of Islamic jurisprudence quoted above is surely an accepted theory among the classical Fuqaha, but one needs to understand the concept behind this principle. The meaning of “laws changing” is not that the laws of Shariah will change in accordance with the time and era, rather, laws that are based on custom and habit (urf ) or the rules of Fiqh which are based on juristic opinion (ra’i) or Ijtihad have often been formulated in the light of prevailing custom. It is therefore permissible to depart from them if the custom on which they were founded changes in the course of time. Rulings that are based upon clear texts of the Qur’an and Sunnah can never change. The scholars of Usul al-Fiqh stipulate that a custom or a practice which is contrary to the text of the Qur’an and Sunnah is an unacceptable custom (urf al-Fasid). (See: Ibn Abidin, Nashr al-Urf fi bina ba’d al-ahkam ala al-urf, P. 115)

Secondly, there is a difference between legal Wisdoms and legal Reasons. The rulings of Shariah are always based on the reason (illa) and not the wisdom (hikma) behind it.

An example for this is that the wisdom behind the prohibition of wine and alcohol is that it creates enmity and hatred between people and it hinders one from the remembrance of Allah. The reason, however, is that it is an intoxicating substance. Now, if one was to say that wine will be Halal for me, as I will lock myself up after drinking wine, thus no destruction will be caused. Any sane person will conclude that he is wrong, as wine is Haram whether you cause any destruction and damage to others or not. The reason being, that the cause for the prohibition of wine is that it intoxicates you, regardless of whether the wisdom is present or not. (See: Usul al-Iftaa & other usul books).

This can be understood more clearly with an example from our day to day life. The law states that the driver must stop his car when the lights are red. The wisdom behind this ruling is that it stops and prevents accidents. However, the reason (illa) for this ruling is the lights being red. Now, a driver who is driving in the middle of the night sees that the light is red, but does not see any sign of a car. If the law was based on the wisdom (which is to prevent accidents), then it would be permissible for his to drive through the red light. However, as it is common knowledge, that despite there being no possibility of an accident, he must stop his car otherwise he will be arrested if caught, for the law is based upon the reason and not the wisdom.

The same is with women travelling without a Mahram. The wisdom behind this ruling is surely to save her from the dangers that can be encountered in the journey. However, this is not the legal reason. The reason (illa) is her travelling the distance of three days and three nights, thus whether the journey is safe, in a plane or on foot, it will remain impermissible.

This is very similar to the ruling of shortening the prayers whilst on journey a (qasr). The wisdom behind the ruling is undue hardship (mashaqqa); however, this is not the reason. The reason is the travelling distance of three days and three nights. Therefore, all the Hanafi scholars (classic and contemporary) have declared that it is incumbent upon a traveller to shorten the fardh prayers, even if one was in a perfectly comfortable journey. We don’t see people suggesting that the prayers must not be shortened due to the modern day means of transport!

Thirdly, if one was to look at the exceptions made by some of the classical scholars of the other schools of thought, it would be evident that these exceptions and dispensations are only in relation to the journey of Hajj. The reason for this is that there has been a lot of emphasis in the Qur’an and Sunnah regarding the obligation of Hajj, thus we have two types of texts that apparently contradict one another. However, this can never be generalized to all types of journeys.

For example, Imam Nawawi, the great Shafi’i jurist (may Allah have mercy on him) states in his monumental commentary of Sahih Muslim:

“There is a consensus (ijma’) of the Ummah that it is obligatory upon a woman to perform Hajj if she is able to do so, due to the general nature of the verse: “Pilgrimage to the house of Allah is a duty men owe to Allah for those who can afford the journey” (Ali Imran, 97), and because of the Hadith “Islam is based on five things”. However, scholars differ as to whether a Mahram is a pre-requisite for a woman to perform the Hajj. Abu Hanifa (Allah have mercy on him) considers it a condition for the Hajj to be obligatory unless the distance between her and Makkah is less than three Marahil. His opinion is also endorsed by a group of Hadith scholars, people of ra’i, Hasan al-Basri and Nakha’i (Allah have mercy on them all). However, Ata, Sa’id ibn Jubayr, Ibn Sirin, Malik, al-Awzai’i, Shafi’i (Allah have mercy on them all) say that a Mahram is not a pre-requisite in order for her travelling to Hajj; rather the condition is safety in the journey. Some of our (Shafi’i) scholars have said: “Safety will be acquired with the husband, Mahram or a group of trustworthy women, and Hajj is not obligatory if one of these three is not found. Therefore, if there was only one trustworthy woman, Hajj would not be obligatory, but to perform Hajj will be permissible. This is the correct opinion……

Our (Shafi’i) scholars differed as to the ruling of her travelling for optional Hajj, visiting family and friends, for business or other such journeys that are not obligatory. Some said: “It will be permissible for her travel for these causes with a group of trustworthy women just as this is permissible for the obligatory Hajj. However, the majority of the scholars (jumhur) state that it is impermissible for her to travel unless accompanied by her husband or Mahram, and this is the correct opinion due to the authentic and established narrations. Qadhi Iyad (m: a major Maliki scholar) said: “All the scholars have agreed on the fact that a woman can not travel besides Hajj and Umrah except in the company of her Mahram, with the exception of migrating from Dar al-Harb, for the reason that it is unlawful (haram) for her to remain in the lands of the Kuffar,” (Nawawi, al-Minhaj sharh Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj, P. 1015, Dar ibn Hazm, Beirut)

The above excerpt of Imam Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) indicates that the dispensation given for a woman to travel in a group of upright and trustworthy women or with one upright woman is only in the journey of Hajj. The great Maliki scholar, Qadhi Iyad (from whom Imam Nawawi quoted) relates the consensus of all the scholars.

Imam Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) confirms this in his al-Majmu’ where he states:

“The second opinion (in the Shafi’i school) is that a woman must not travel for other than Hajj without a Mahram, and this is the correct opinion and clearly related from Imam Shafi’i himself in his al-Umm. The reason is that to travel for other than Hajj is not obligatory.” Thereafter he quotes all the narrations that have been narrated from the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) in this regard. (See: Kitab al-Majmu’ Sharh al-Muhazzab, 7/460)

The Maliki Madhab is also quite clear on this. We have already cited the opinion of Qadhi Iyad in Imam Nawawi’s commentary. Also, one of the major authorities in the Maliki school, Imam Dasouqi (may Allah have mercy on him) sates:

“If the journey is obligatory (like Hajj, m), it will be permissible for her to travel in the company of a Mahram, husband or a group of trustworthy and upright people. If the journey is recommended (mandub, and not obligatory), then it will be permitted for her to travel with only her husband or a Mahram and not in a group,” (Hashiya al-Dasouqi ala Sharh al-Kabir, 2/14)

The Hanbali School is similar to the Hanafi School, in that a woman must not travel without her Mahram accompanying her even for the auspicious journey of Hajj. Imam al-Bahuti (may Allah have mercy on him) states:

“If a woman performed Hajj without a Mahram, this will be unlawful (haram) for her, although the obligation of Hajj will be lifted.” (Kashaf al-Qina ala matn al-Iqna, 2/213. Also see: Ibn Qudama, al-Mugni, 3/236-237)

The foregoing is clear in determining that none of the four major Fiqh schools of thought permit a woman to travel without her husband or a Mahram in a journey besides Hajj. The Shafi’i and Maliki schools give a dispensation in that she may travel only for Hajj in a group of trustworthy and upright women (or one woman, according to some) given the importance and significance of the ritual of Hajj.

Therefore, it will not be permissible for a woman to travel over 48 miles in order to visit her family and friends, acquire knowledge or any other social reason. It is also strictly impermissible in the Hanafi and Hanbali schools for her to travel for Hajj, and permissible with a group of upright women, however, in the Shafi’i and Maliki schools.

Some try to justify women’s travelling with the Hadith where the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) mentioned that a woman will travel and perform Tawaf of the Ka’ba without a husband with her (Sahih al-Bukhari).

This Hadith seems to suggest the permissibility of women travelling alone, but it needs further, more precise analysis. The Shafi’i school, for example, considered this Hadith as evidence that a woman may travel for Hajj without a Mahram if the journey is safe. The Hanafi jurists, however, pointed out that this Hadith is an account of something which is going to happen, and as such is not a sign of its approval or permissibility. In any case, it seems very shaky to deduce a general permissibility of a woman travelling alone in safety just from this hadith, especially in view of all the other evidences. (See: Fath al-Bari, Umdat al-Qari & I’la al-Sunan).

It must be remarked here that the Shariah principle is that unlawful things become permissible in case of necessity, such as consuming pork becomes permissible when one fears death out of hunger. Contemporary scholars have given a dispensation in that if a woman does not have a Mahram (for one reason or another) and she is in a dire situation, then it will be permissible for her to travel. One of the great contemporary scholars, Shaykh Mufti Muhammad Taqi al-Usmani (may Allah preserve him) states:

“However, in the case of a woman who has neither a husband nor a father, nor does she have some other relative who could support her financially, nor does she have enough funds to take care of her needs, it would, under this situation, become permissible for her to go out of the house under legal hijab and earn her living to the limit of her need. Now, when this purpose can be easily achieved while living in one's own country or city, then there is no need to travel to a foreign land. If there is no other way for her, but to travel to another city, and she does not have any Mahrams, then only in this situation it will be permissible for her to take the opinion of Imam Shafi’i and Imam Malik, for they have given permission for her to travel with a group of trustworthy women.” (Buhuth fi qadhaya fiqhiyya al-mu’asira, P. 338)

I would like to add here that, as we have seen, the Shafi’i and Maliki schools have only given a dispensation in travelling for Hajj, thus this dispensation would be based on the concept of necessity.

Finally before parting, it would be wise to mention, that a woman's Mahram is a permanently non-marriageable male relative of hers. According to the majority of scholars, his being a Muslim is not a condition.

It is stated al-Fatwa al-Hindiyya:

A maharam is the husband and those for whom it is permanently unlawful to marry the woman, whether this is due to blood relationship, fosterage, or marriage (such as the father in-law, m). It is a condition that he is trusted, sane, and has reached puberty (baligh), whether he is free or a slave and regardless of whether he is a Muslim or a unbeliever. However, if he is a fire worshiper who considers marriage with relations and family members lawful, then she should avoid travelling with him. A boy who is close to puberty will be considered to be mature.

Amidst the fire, smoke and disruption of two major interface fires and hundreds of overnight evacuations, one thing has become very clear – the people of Oliver and Midway are some of the most resilient, generous and compassionate in British Columbia.

Premier Christy Clark; Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Steve Thomson and Boundary-Similkameen MLA Linda Larson saw this first hand, visiting the communities and hearing stories of close calls, survival and assistance from those who escaped the blaze and those who now are helping them recover.

Quan Yin... the Goddess of Compassion and Mercy

Quan Yin (Guan Yin) is one of the most universally beloved of deities in the Buddhist tradition.

A research doctor discovers he has a brain tumor. After following all the usual treatments he naturally wants to know how he can prevent a relapse, but is told just to go live his life. Dissatisfied with this answer he turns his academic prowess towards uncovering the research that would support changes in lifestyle that would help keep cancer at bay. The research is convincing and, combined with his own story, offers a very compassionate, empowering and inspiring series of patient anecdotes backed up by hard science.

There's the diet component, the psychological component and a fitness component that even includes karate as a treatment for patients undergoing chemo. This is a holistic approach that appreciates how everything goes together. There is the cancer personality profile similar to the Type A personality of a heart patient. The cancer patient is described to be a person who was never really welcomed into the family; a family that might also have been on the violent side or cold and distant. The child makes up for it by trying to be perfect and take care of everyone. As an adult they tend to over invest in one aspect of their life i.e. their profession or marriage. When this investment is threatened or lost, the childhood grief returns arousing a feeling of helplessness. Add to that helplessness a load of stress and you have someone who feels defeated before they've even begun. Experiments of rats shot up with tumor cells and given shock treatment to prove the point. The will to live can be destroyed and in turn their immune system.

Many stories follow about how patients found their way back to health and to the life force by taking up meditation thus restoring a mind body connection, by healing wounds of the past through therapy and by reconnecting to the life force and transforming the chaotic mind to the coherence of equilibrium. This last can be done by reciting the Buddhist mantra Om Mani Padme Hum or the rosary in Latin. Healing medicine carried over from spiritual practice. Shamans are also mentioned as agents who reconnect the patient back to his will to live. Lots of studies described to back up these practices especially meditation.

There is also a chapter devoted to fear of death and its many parts. The fear of suffering, the fear of nothingness, the fear of being alone, of being a burden, of abandoning one's children, of unfinished stories. That last one often used as fuel to spur people to fulfill their dreams, i.e. what if you had only one year to live. For the terminally ill it can still be done and is the gift of such illness.

I like reading these books because they reaffirm my own lifestyle. I don't usually pick them up unless someone close to me has cancer. A cancer patient might not feel the same way about this book. They might tend to blame themselves. I read it because Catherine has been diagnosed with cancer; it is a way to feed hope into the equation. So I read bits of it to her as the occasion prompts. How to look on the bright side of statistics as demonstrated in chapter one. What lifestyle changes to support. (Heavy on the exercise.) Inspiring anecdotes to read her about what cancer patients did to improve their odds. Extraordinary feats accomplished by cancer patients during and after treatment.

The book is endorsed by David Spiegel who ran the support groups that were the basis of his research. We both worked for him as videographers of those support groups so know and respect him. He is heavily quoted in the book as are others we are familiar with—Irv Yalom and Michael Lerner. There's a lot of dubious material out there in the cancer literature and this allowed us to trust the information. The book fell across my path in an ad in a two year old issue of Ode magazine that I happened to have found unread in our magazine basket while looking for something to take to the doctor's office.

Catherine will survive her cancer (good prognosis caught early). What she will make of the journey will be her own personal story. We are greatly prepared already by the work we did for Spiegel that allowed us both to witness and hear the stories of the women of the metastatic breast cancer group. It is tempting to see it as a foreshadowing. She already knew the reputation of her oncologist because of what the women had said about him. Luckily they liked him.

Beginning with the 2nd century B.C., and continuing into the 6th century A.D., the paintings and sculptures in the caves of Ajanta and Ellora, inspired by Buddhism and its compassionate ethos, unleashed a surge of artistic excellence unmatched in human history. These Buddhist and Jain caves are ornately carved, yet seem quiet and meditative and exude a divine energy and power.

About 107 km from the city of Aurangabad in Maharashtra, are the rock-out caves of Ajanta nestled in a panoramic gorge, in the form of a gigantic horseshoe. A set of 29 caves, Ajanta is among the finest examples of some of the earliest Buddhist architecture, cave paintings and sculptures. These caves comprise Chaitya halls or shrines, dedicated to Lord Buddha and Viharas or monasteries, used by Buddhist monks for meditation and the study of Buddhist teachings. The paintings that adorn the walls and ceilings of the caves depict incidents from the life of lord Buddha and various Buddhist divinities. Among the most interesting paintings are the Jataka tales, illustrating diverse stories relating to the previous incarnations of the Buddha as Bodhisattava, a saintly being who is destined to become the Buddha. These elaborate sculptures and paintings stand in impressive grandeur in spite of withstanding the ravages of time. Amid the beautiful images and paintings are sculptures of Buddha, calm and serene in contemplation.

The cave temples and monasteries at Ellora, excavated out of the vertical face of an escarpment, are 26 km north of Aurangabad. Sculptors, inspired by Buddhism, Jainism and Hinduism, created elaborate rock carvings. Extending in a linear arrangement, the 34 caves contain Buddhist Chaityas or halls of worship, Viharas or monasteries and Hindu and Jain temples. Spanning a period of about 600 years between the 5th and 11th century A.D., the earliest excavation here is of the Dhumar Lena (Cave 29). The most imposing excavation is, without doubt, that of the magnificent Kailasa Temple (Cave 16) which is the largest monolithic structure in the world. Known as Verul in ancient times, it has continuously attracted pilgrims through the centuries to the present day.

Declared as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO since 1983, the paintings and sculptures of Ajanta and Ellora, considered masterpieces of Buddhist religious art, have had a great influence in the development of art in India. The creative use of colour and freedom of expression used in depicting human and animal forms makes the cave paintings at Ajanta one of the high watermarks of artistic creativity. The Ellora preserved as an artistic legacy that will continue to inspire and enrich the lives of generations to come. Not only is this cave complex a unique artistic creation and an excellent example of technological exploit but also, with its sanctuaries devoted to Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism, it illustrates the spirit of tolerance that was characteristic of ancient India.

In a room behind the open dining hall at St. John the Compassionate Mission on Broadview Avenue a small group turns to an icon of Mary as they pray.

Award of Excellence | High School Division | Wilton High School PTSA, Connecticut

I will change the world by preserving the health of our planet. My work refers to mankind's responsibility to be a steward of Earth. In my piece, a figure is surrounded by natural elements- earth, water, fire, and air. She compassionately cradles the Earth in her arms, as we all should. We can make choices that are beneficial for our planet, like reducing fossil fuel usage and eating a plant-based diet, and change the world for the better. I hope that my painting raises awareness, and inspires others to do what they can to protect the planet we call home.

Gargoyle is a mouth for ejected words of sweeping Lucifer this took other angels that had the seed of desire planted within them, for it is selfish desires that fuel the ego. He was expelled from the higher regions because he no longer had the Christic virtues but had the ego crystallized instead. Since we assert that selfish desires and interests strengthen the egos hold on us, it is also true that altruistic, compassionate service vivify the Christic force within us that stirs us to self-sacrifice for humanity (The hanged man). Can 'Lucifer' be the Hanged Man #12 card ? Here are a few depictions of the card for reference first: The Hanged Man...also known as Perspective....now also known as "Lucifer"....here's why I think this is an awesome pictorial for the meaning. What is the central meaning for the Hanged Man?

Letting go...as in accepting God's Will (give me a chance to explain...just a little more)

Giving up control

Accepting what is

Putting others first

NOW WAIT A MINUTE, ERIC !! You said this would all make sense....Lucifer isn't this way!

...TRUE.....and that's my point. He is the card's "shadow side" (or Reversed). The shadow side of every card is the not-so-well known or publicized meanings that are just as much true as the upright meanings...just from a different 'perspective' (like how i tied that all in...LOL)

Lucifer...Satan....the Devil....whoever you may call him....he IS the Hanged Man's other half to complete the whole story.

Let's look at the original card again...upside down or Shadow side: This way what does the card suggest? The man is now grounded again, able to walk on his OWN TWO FEET, under his OWN power. What about his head? It's still a-glow with enlightenment ! But wait....I thought the man got his enlightenment while hanging upside and submitting? He did....but he also CAN on his own...

...just like Lucifer did !

Remember the first card above said "New Vision"? The figure was 'standing tall' with wings spread, leaving the corpse on the ground that was a slave to the 'old ways'. Keeping these images in mind lets see the meanings of the Hanged Man again...as it's 'True' other "Shadow"

Reversing...turning the world around...overturning old priorities

Seeing things from a new angle or perspective

Up-Ending the old order...doing an about-face

Living in the moment...for the NOW !

Defiance

Self-assertion

Sound more like the Lucifer you know? Let's look again: What we are witnessing is the moment Lucifer made his choice to rebel...and just BE HIMSELF ! On the left...heaven...his appointment there, where he was told what to do and had limited choice. On the right, FREEDOM as not a PLACE, but an IDEA....where he stretches his hand out in acceptance (notice the other is more closed with a "shackle of light" restricting it's movement).

Notice, also, the color of his wings: white on left from that of God's control, dark on right to show expansive freedom like that of space. In-between there is a struggle for control, for power, and for self-enlightenment. Both God and now Lucifer know this....the time for a new perspective has come...and Lucifer chose FREE WILL.

Whether I believe in Lucifer or not is unimportant...only the symbolism here to help see the relationship of the meanings of both Light and Shadow...neither one more important than the other....both necessary to the True meaning of the Hanged Man card.

Which side are you? Do you submit to what others tell you is right...or do you find you listen to what your heart tells you? You may have more in common with this card than you previously thought ! Cheers !

Eric "MoonLightTrucker"

“Esoterically, the Hanged Man is the human spirit which is suspended from heaven by a single thread. Wisdom, not death, is reward for this voluntary sacrifice during which the human soul, suspended above the world of illusion, and meditating upon its unreality, is rewarded by the achievement of self-realization.” – Manly P. Hall, The Secret Teachings of All Ages.

In the Tarot with the twelfth (12th) card called ‘The Hanged Man”or in French, “Le Pendu.” The Hanged Man (XII) is the twelfth trump or Major Arcana card in most traditional Tarot decks.

This card portrays a young man hanging upside down by his left leg from a horizontal beam, the latter supported by two tree trunks from each of which six branches have been removed. The right leg of the youth is crossed in back of the left and his arms are folded behind his back in such a way as to form a cross surmounting a downward pointing triangle. According to Elphias Levi, the Hanged Man thus forms an inverted symbol of sulphur. Elphias Levi had stated in his book, Transcendental Magic; ” It is also implied fantastically that the Roman alphabet is related to Tarot cards, but whereas the Hebrew Mem answers to the card of Death the Roman M is referred to the Hanged Man, Resh to the Judgement card but R to the Blazing Star.” Levi likens the hanged man to the legend of Prometheus, the titan who gave fire to mankind and in turn suffered the wrath of Zeus by becoming the eternal sufferer, not just by being bound to a rock, but to also have his liver fed upon by an eagle each day. the Egyptian Tarot the hanged man is hung upside down between two palm trees, which is said to signify the Sun God who dies perennially for his world. In some Tarot decks, the figure in the 12th card carries under each arm a money bag from which coins are escaping. Some people have said that this latter card is that of Judas Iscariot who is said to have gone forth and hanged himself, the money bags representing the payment he received for his crime. The Hanged Man is a form of Pittura infamante;

(Italian for “defaming portrait”; plural pitture infamanti) is a genre of defamatory painting and relief, common in Renaissance Italy. It came to be regarded as a form of art rather than effigy; the power of the genre derived from a feudal-based code of honor, where shame was one of the most significant social punishments. Common themes of pittura infamante—which were meant to be humiliating—include depicting the subject as wearing a mitre or hanging upside down, being in the presence of unclean animals such as pigs or donkeys or those deemed evil like snakes; pittura infamante would also contain captions listing the offenses of the subject.Pittura infamante could originate as more favorable depictions, only to be transformed after the subject had fallen out of favor.

I drove down to Sierra Vista to speak at my dad's Rosary service. I collated memories that each of my siblings had shared with me for the service:

Laura:

Dad was there for the birth of my twins Molly and Megan, watching the c-section in awe and then he’d would come by the house often to just look at them. A few months later, our baby Molly died from SIDS.

We were devastated and Dad took us to the hospital, funeral home and he made all arrangements for us including a burial plot next to Mom’s. He came along side us in a very compassionate and un-assuming way though all of this, including taking me to my first SIDS support meeting. He was there for me in my deepest sorrow and need and for this I will forever be grateful.

On a lighter note, my son Joe went down to Arizona to spend spring break with his grandpa. I allowed him to go with the promise he’d work on his math skills which he was failing at in the 7th grade. Come to find out later his math tutoring was done at the dog track where dad taught him how to compute the odds.

Later when Joe came home I asked him how it went and he said it was GREAT! “Grandpa was just like a teenager with a drivers license and a credit card”. Needless to say, my son grew up to be a comedian by profession.

Mike:

I was the runt of four with a raging stutter. Dad was from the Marine Corps. Big loud and impatient. He had a big car too. In the morning he’d rev it up, slam into gear and GO!

Some time during my speech impediment years, I committed a crime against one of my siblings, and Dad wanted to know why I done it. I replied “beak beak beak beak”.

While working on my fifth attempt at saying because, Dad lost patience and smacked me on the side of the head. Then in a smooth voice I said the word “because” and continued to speak of my reasons.

Dad didn’t stick around to listen to my tale of grievance. He left, presumably to inform Mom that one of her kids was defective, but not to worry he fixed it. He did not fix it but no matter.

Seemed Dad didn’t really care about my problem that would likely go away on its own. Dad showed me a good example of ignoring the petty and dramatic and if you can't, well there is always humor.

My Dad also stumbled, tripped and maybe stuttered, but that’s not who he is or what I remember him for. Thank you Dad.

Steve:

What I would like to share about Dad, are memories that frequently come to me in unexpected moments. The other day I had the pleasure of preparing fresh salmon for dinner. As I opened the bag I was struck by the wonderful ocean smell of this fish. It was the the smell of the San Juan islands, the straights of Juan De Fuca, Sekiu and Westport, of trips he took us on as kids. The beaches, the rollers, kelp, crab, the cold misty mornings, damp and early. A tug boat on fire in the distance, huge Black fish swimming near our little rented outboard boat. The realization the "garbage fish" we threw back after a day of fishing was a mistake. "Ling Cod! Salmon! that's what we are after!" dad would say. I loved that feeling of letting out the weighted baited hook as it dropped out of sight into the deep waters and kelp beds. My thumb on the reel, praying I didn't let it out too fast and snarl the line in a "rats nest!" Stuck in a small boat with your siblings, two of which had rat nested their own reels, with a pissed off Irish catholic ex-Marine dad and Boomer our big clumsy German Shepard, dad yelling for us "to be quiet and not scare the fish" was, in retrospect, a rich experience full of future teachable moments. Like allot of things in life, I have learned, that the most rewarding are also the most challenging. Certainly, for me relating to dad was just that. Challenging and rewarding.

I'm fortunate to have hiked with dad in the North Cascades, Pasayten Wilderness, and Olympic National Park on the Washington coast. And to have kayaked off the coast of Vancouver Island in Canada. Great trips all, as I said rewarding and challenging. In these he gave me the great gift and appreciation of nature and the outdoors. I cherish these memories, they being apart of me and I hold them fast and am reminded of them in unexpected ways. So for me, the sight and sound and smell of the ocean, or the scent of cedar trees, the crunch of dry pine needles, snow and alpine meadows will be my rewarding memories of my father, the boy from Brooklyn NY.

Me:

Dad had an interesting life and I loved hearing his stories. He attended the Merchant Marine Academy and quit the Academy after his first long cruise on a freighter that made stops in Asia just after World War 2. He came home and worked as a deckhand on tugboats for a while on the Hudson river.

He volunteered to join the Marines in 1950 at the recruitment office in Times Square with the hope that it would impress a girl he was interested in (It didn't work). He served in the 1st Marine Division in Korea during the war and was a Purple Heart recipient. While on patrol, he was ordered to move up a hill with another soldier when a satchel charge was tossed down at them. He survived but his partner did not. When we were kids, we were always afraid to wake dad up when he was sleeping - he'd jump up screaming. We'd do "paper, rocks, scissors" to see who'd have to wake up dad from a nap when mom called on us to do so..

I know now, he suffered from PTSD for most of his adult life. When I see any veteran, I think of my dad and how his service cost him much more than the few years he actively served.

He was one of the first recreational SCUBA Divers in Seattle back in the early 60’s. This was before Dive shops held classes – his training was via a friends’ connection with the Seattle Police Department. He’d go out on weekends with an infamous dive club called “The Mudsharks”. One day he brought home a huge Octopus stuffed in a gunny sack that he’d caught. He poured it out on the front lawn and proceeded to try and cut the legs off with his huge dive knife. This sight immediately attracted every kid in the neighborhood to come out to watch the spectacle. Well, the anatomy of an Octopus makes it nearly impossible to cut even with a sharp knife and dad frustration level was soon pegged after a few minutes of effort so he went and got a large axe from the garage and started to hack away. Doors immediately opened across the neighborhood and moms called their kids home “right this minute” He eventually was able to secure the meat from the legs and had it ground up so it could be cooked into a chowder. We ate that stuff for weeks!

Dad was a huge influence in my life – I am who I am today because of him

You instilled in me a work ethic and that I should NEVER hit a girl (which our big sister took full advantage of) ,

Dad always told us kids to think for ourselves and to never take credit for someone elses' work.

I will remember fondly that he taught me how to draw by making 'connect the dots' drawings for me when I a little kid and my creative identity I attribute directly to him.

I, in turn, passed along that to my own son in the same way

Dad had his faults and I won’t go into them here but even those taught me important life lessons that made me a better husband and father.

I will choose to remember with gratitude that he raised us in the best way he knew how. I will remember how funny he could be especially when he wasn’t trying to be.

He always made sure our family had great summer vacations.

As an adult, dad and I climbed Mt. Rainier, skied, and did some memorable road trips together in Europe and the western U.S. and I feel very fortunate that I was able to forge a healthy adult relationship with him and in his last days be some comfort to him. Good bye dad, be at peace.

Driving home with a carload of memories to distribute amony my siblings, it was an emotional trip for me with plenty of time by myself to reflect on how my dad had influenced my life.

When I first posted the image of the male great blue heron gliding through the air on it's way to find another branch for it's mate, there were lots of comments about how compassionate and loving the GBHs are in their bond. So very true .... and it's such a pleasure to watch.

Their ritualistic activities which all benefit their family-to-be are a sight to be seen. Such patience is exhibited by the male, as he finds, as I said, just the perfect branch to bring back to the nest. You can actually watch them select, then toss away the branches that didn't quite make the cut for the privilege of being part of its nest. The female exhibits patience and gratitude when he returns as they acknowledge each others presence in the nest - he proudly passes the branch to her, she gently accepts it and they transfer the control of the branch from one to the other. Then she carefully puts it in the ideal place in the nest to keep it fit for their young.

OK, I know it's a bit weird to say, but there's almost a "Lady and the Tramp" moment between them - you know, when they are eating spaghetti and both nibble off the ends until they meet in the middle. :-) It's absolutely endearing to see.

Many people a few days ago said that we humans could learn a lot from these birds and I agree wholeheartedly.... from animals in general. Just love this image!

Thanks for stopping by to view and especially for all of your thoughts and comments ... as you can see I do read them all and, for me, it enhances the images for me.

I will be busy with work starting tomorrow morning, so I will not be on flickr too much until Friday morning. I will try to catch up with some streams at that time.

In the meanwhile, enjoy the rest of your weekend!

All through the night her fingers kept scrolling through the front lock ov hair .She was focussing somewhere in the air. Silence polluted her head with vague noises. Inside the dark room the only temporary light would be of the vehicles that passed down the street after every click of sixty minutes and each tick amidst the time was trouncing her nerves “I need a breakthrough”, she said to herself and took a deep breath…..

In the darkness of the abyss there is exquisite,

compassionate concern for each of us ~

A vast, Divine love and personal attention to our growth…. like pearls of hope, Faith circumscribes the dark

There is a Divine Plan and you are not in charge of it! Sun was coming up.

It’s time to call out the greatest lie in British politics: the claim that the Left is more moral than the Right. This sanctimonious humbug goes to the heart of how the Labour Government sees itself, and drives its insufferable messiah complex. Self-styled “progressives” consider themselves to be better people: they “care”, they are compassionate, they are “kind”, they believe in social justice, trade union powers, anti-racism, altruism, “equity” and saving the planet – unlike the selfish, demagogic, reactionary, hateful, imperialistic, capitalist, corrupt barbarians on the Right.

This ludicrous caricature is the product of a toxic psychological conceit. The truth is that Labour in 2024 is the new nasty party, obsessed with divide and rule. Far from occupying the moral high ground, it fights dirty. It specialises in pitting one group against another, in buying votes and paying off potential supporters, and is supremely skilled at dressing up political self-interest as virtue, hypocrisy as philosophy, and revenge as careful policy. It should engage in less virtue-signalling and more soul-searching. Its angry self-righteousness, constant slandering of the Tories as having “crashed the economy”, shamelessness in making up “noble lies” about fiscal “black holes”, the assumption that anybody who questions or disagrees must be evil, is backfiring, as Sir Keir Starmer’s plummeting popularity indicates.

Labour’s peculiar tone, its mix of the hectoring and the triumphalist, derives in part from the fact it has abandoned its more benign traditions. It is no longer committed to its original mission of ameliorating the living conditions and opportunities of working people in Britain. Yes, it still wants to regulate companies more – which will reduce job-creation and productivity – but that is primarily displacement activity. It has become more interested in post-material concerns, in telling everybody how to live, in re-engineering society along environmental, woke and egalitarian lines.

In the 1940s, it wanted the NHS to serve the people; today it sees the people as serving “our” NHS, hence proposed restrictions on smoking outdoors (a misguided policy on its own terms, as smokers generally die earlier). Labour once wanted the working class to own cars and travel on holiday abroad like the rich; Barbara Castle, the 1970s Left-wing firebrand, argued that “the private car has brought the boon of mobility to millions of people … that boon should be available to everyone”. Now Labour, by forcing a ban on new pure-petrol cars in just five and a half years, will price poorer drivers off the roads, at least until the cost of electric cars drops. How can it be right to prevent people from seeing friends or family?

Ed Miliband is driving up energy prices, rushing through decarbonisation before technologies are ready, hurting the poor and middle classes for the sake of reductions in emissions that will barely make a dent to the global picture. At the same time, Labour now prefers technocracy to democracy, handing powers to quangos, such as the Office for Budget Responsibility, or lawyers, and is uncomfortable with traditional, old Labour varieties of patriotism. It venerates so-called international law, remains secretly devastated by Brexit and is heavily influenced by woke ideology. Its refusal even to pretend to tackle illegal immigration won’t do genuine refugees any favours. It is cowardice camouflaged as liberalism.

When Robin Cook was foreign secretary, Labour boasted of its ethical foreign policy (until it was discredited by Iraq); today, it appears driven by an unprincipled fear of losing votes to Jeremy Corbyn’s alliance. Labour’s treatment of Israel is revolting.

One day after six Israeli hostages were butchered by Hamas savages, David Lammy signalled that the terrorists’ tactics are working when he suspended 30 arms export licences to Israel. We continue to sell far more weapons to Qatar, protectors of Hamas; we continue to tolerate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Britain. Lammy’s disgraceful decision came on the 85th anniversary of the Tiger Hill scandal, an earlier British capitulation to terrorism, when the Royal Navy opened fire on Jewish refugees seeking to disembark off Tel Aviv.

Labour’s other betrayals may not be as extreme, but they emphasise its nastiness. Angela Rayner is considering stopping people buying their council houses, despite having benefited from the policy herself. Pulling up the ladder is a Leftist trait; there is nothing moral about dashing working people’s dream of home ownership. The right to buy didn’t create the housing crisis. Britain still has a huge supply of social homes – only three European countries have a larger share of “sub-market” rental housing than we do, as noted by the Centre for Policy Studies. Our problem is that we have a much smaller overall housing stock per capita, exacerbated by very high levels of immigration.

This Government seems to revel in preventing others from obtaining the advantages they themselves enjoyed. Keir Starmer received a bursary to fund his sixth-form studies at Reigate Grammar School when it became a fee-paying institution after he joined (itself the result of an earlier battle in Labour’s never-ending war against private education). Yet now he is punishing private-school parents, most of whom scrimp and save to pay fees out of post-tax income, with his despicable imposition of VAT and removal of business rates relief.

His party is reducing opportunities for state school children, too. Ofsted single-word school judgments have been scrapped: this makes life easier for headteachers, and harder for parents. Labour doesn’t care about strivers, those seeking to better the lives of their families. It puts Left-wing ideology and the interest of the public sector first.

I support the removal of pensioners’ winter fuel payments, a universal benefit that cannot be justified at a time of population ageing. But even then Labour’s motivations are vicious: the savings are being transferred to overpaid train drivers. Labour’s approach to pensioners is inspired by zero-sum generational warfare, tinged with Brexit revanchism, not principled anti-welfarism. The assumption is that young people want to hurt the old, even if they don’t themselves gain directly; there is no constructive attempt at building a more viable retirement system.

Any move to impose a wealth tax would confirm Labour is primarily concerned with hurting those it doesn’t like, not helping those that need a hand-up. The politics of envy has never worked in Britain in the past, and it won’t succeed this time.
