Eikando, formally known as Eikan-dō Zenrin-ji, is a historic temple in Kyoto renowned for its autumn foliage and a rich legacy in Pure Land Buddhism. Established in the Heian period (853 AD) by the monk Shinsho, it initially functioned as a Shingon Buddhist temple before transitioning to the Jōdo sect under the leadership of its famous abbot Eikan during the 11th century. Eikan, revered for his compassion and teachings, left a lasting spiritual influence that shaped the temple’s identity. Eikando is often called the "Temple of Maple Leaves" due to its stunning seasonal colors, which have made it a beloved destination for centuries.
The temple’s design is a harmonious blend of Heian period elegance and Zen simplicity, with a series of interconnected halls and pathways that wind through its hillside setting. One of its most iconic features is the Amida-do Hall, housing a unique statue of Amida Buddha with a backward glance, symbolizing the Buddha watching over his followers. The Hojo Pond Garden reflects traditional Japanese landscape design, providing a tranquil space for contemplation. The temple's elevated Tahoto Pagoda offers panoramic views of Kyoto, blending architectural beauty with natural surroundings. Eikando’s layout and aesthetic exemplify the deep connection between spirituality, art, and nature in Japanese culture.

Pastor Baek and the orphanage director share a nice lighthearted moment.
While working on an assignment for Compassion International in Korea I followed a man back to the orphanage of his childhood near the southern tip of Korea. Although my time at the orphanage was brief, the unbearably sweet children there affected me deeply. The mix of being reminded of my own orphan childhood with the knowledge that these sweet children were without parents to tuck them in at night choked me up for weeks after returning home. Although their situation is sad, they, like most children, still experience the joys of curiosity and simple play. I hope this short series will be able to express a bit of their joy in the face of adversity. They have a great deal to teach us. To see some background photos of me hanging out (literally) with some of the children you can go HERE.
