2021-019 Compass - This is a stack of 19 images. From my research, it looks like the average number of images to use is somewhere between 30 and 50. As I expected, there are mechanical aids to help maintain consistent microadjustments. Now I just have to decide how much I'm willing to invest in such aids. :)

Near Bude in Cornwall... Compass point has very unique rock formations. This one looks like a bit like a long dinosaur neck skeleton.

Sundays are slow so be liberal on the comment side and I'll happily return the compliment as usual :D

“If you could only sense how important you are to the lives of those you meet; how important you can be to the people you may never even dream of. There is something of yourself that you leave at every meeting with another person.”

Compass Bus Enviro 200 GX62 CKP on a 37B service in Brighton this afternoon, 21st March, 2019.

Compass Bus' DAF DB250/Wright Eclipse Gemini LJ05 BNK, which carries the company's corporate livery, is pictured here on Queens Road, Brighton, whilst working Brighton & Hove's 7X service to Brighton Station. 02/08/16

Previously with Arriva London South as fleet number DW126.

The summer of 2016 saw the introduction of a new limited-stop variant of service 7. The service, numbered 7X, provides a faster, more scenic link from Brighton Marina to Brighton Station. It runs at a 20-minute frequency along the seafront via Marine Parade stopping only at Paston Place (forCounty Hospital), then non-stop to the Sea Life Centre, Old Steine and North Street.

Due to staff shortages, Brighton & Hove worked closely with other local operators to support specific services. The company sub-contracted this service out to Compass Bus, using a pair of VDL DB250/Wright Eclipse Gemini vehicles recently acquired by the company, from Arriva London South.

In addition to this, Brighton & Hove also sub-contracted its 77 service out to Seaford & District. Closed-top double-deck vehicles were allocated on weekdays, and open-top / heritage vehicles were allocated on weekends.

My husband got me this lovely, palm-sized vintage compass at a ship salvage shop and antique dealer in Bangladesh. The walnut-toned wood box has a metal label reading "Negretti & Zambra, as does the compass itself, both on the cover, and under the glass on the rose's face. The outside of the compass lid reads "Edward VII Compass King & Emporer 1908". The date, 1908, and the word, "London" is inscribed on the compass rose under the glass. The compass has a fob, as well as a sliding knob to lock the floating needle in place when not in use.

The poem, Robert Frost's "The Road Less Taken" has been engraved on brass-toned metal and appears to have been attached to the inside cover. This poem dates to 1915 and was not really considered a classic until the mid-1920s. I'm assuming that the inscription was added later, particularly because the font-styles are more modern.

My husband isn't sure if the compass actually dates to 1908. Negretti & Zambra manufactured compasses, telescopes, monocules, barameters and other scientific items during this time period, but I was unable to find a similar compass style during a fairly comprehensive Internet search.

If you know anything about vintage compasses, please leave a comment. No matter whether this is a reproduction or an actual antique, it is still a wonderful addition to my collection of cartography and geographic ephemera.

The Geomantic Compass

The geomantic compass used in Feng Shui evaluations is called the luopan in Chinese meaning "all" and "bowl". It is said that all the knowledge pertaining to the physics and flow of energies of the planet is written inside the compass.

The original Geomantic Compass had 36 rings, whereas, the most recent ones are simpler and have from 8 to 24 rings. In these rings, aside from the needle always pointing North/South, we find the correct information to do a perfect feng shui evaluation. The concentric circles of the compass contain the numbers of the Magic Squares (9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1), the 8 Trigrams of the I Ching (Yiying) and their corresponding directions, as well as the Heavenly Stems and Earth Branches. Also in the circles are contained the 28 equatorial divisions which are an important part of the evaluation because they help determine not only the ideal site, but the correct place for that particular individual to live.

In order for a feng shui evaluation to be accurate and correct the compass must be used. This is because the individual must be evaluated as to their personal data first in order to proceed with the terrain (topography) and site evaluation for that particular person. For example, in South Florida we have flat land with some areas below sea level. We also have swampy grasslands which are not favorable because stagnant water can attract negative energies. Using the compass we can determine the correct site to avert the negative energies of the stagnant water. This also apply to areas crowded with buildings, particularly apartment buildings.

Got directions? LOL

One of the most common symbols of Freemasonry is the crossed compass and set-square. The compass and square are architect’s tools, and symbolize God as the architect of the universe, among other things.

As measuring instruments, the tools represent judgment and discernment.

The compass, which is used to draw circles, represents the realm of the spiritual- eternity. It is symbolic of the defining and limiting principle, and also of infinite boundaries.

The angle measures the square, the symbol of earth and the realm of the material. The square represents fairness, balance, firmness, etc., which is reflected in phrases such as “on the square” and “squared away.” Something that is squared is something that is stable, a foundation for building upon.

Together, the compass and square represent the convergence of matter and spirit, and the convergence of earthly and spiritual responsibilities. The two symbols together form a hexagram, the union of earth with the heavens, matter and mind, etc.

This Compass jellyfish (Chrysaora hysoscella) is swimming along beside Lundy Island (owned by the National Trust) complete with a little fish in symbiotic relationship.

According to www.marlin.ac.uk "Chrysaora hysoscella has a thickened bell (manubrium) that can grow up to 30 cm in diameter. The edges of the bell are developed into 32 lobes and bear 24 marginal tentacles. These are arranged in eight groups of three which alternate with eight sensory organs and are capable of great elongation. The marginal tentacles are conical in shape with a flattened thicker base giving the jellyfish a fluted appearance. They are also covered with clusters of stinging cells (nematocysts). It has a long and slender manubrium which leads onto 4 oral arms that are fused for a short distance at its base. Typically Chrysaora hysoscella is yellowish white in colour with a highly distinctive brown pattern like the radii of a compass."

General note: In this film, Wayne Ferris talks to Senator George Smathers about his trip to Latin America. Most of the program deals with the communist threat to the Latin American region. The show is comprised primarily of footage shot during Smathers' trip to various locations in the Caribbean and South America. Scenes include: riots in Panama over control of the Canal Zone, and footage of Fidel Castro shaking his fist and meeting with Russian leader, Anastas Mikoyan. Later, there is footage of an interview by Miami reporter, Dick Lobo, with Generalissimo, Raphael Trujillo, of the Dominican Republic. The segment on Venezuela includes 1958 footage of Vice President Richard Nixon's motorcade being stoned by angry protesters. There are a few brief scenes of Smathers meeting with Venezuelan President Bettencourt. There are brief shots of Haiti and Puerto Rico, including Smathers' meeting with the Haitian President. Senator Smathers comments that student exchange programs may improve relations with Latin America. Mr. Ferris closes the program with recommendations, such as: price stabilization measures; mineral quotas; market subsidies; and improved foreign aid. Produced by WCKT of Miami.
