I guess I will "pester" you with more flower images in this stream in the near future, simply because I have photographed so many recently ;) Partly, of course, because there are too many wayside beauties out there right now to ignore. And then, I'm still testing out the little Sony's "macro" (or at least "tele close-up") abilities. It was the one thing that was a little of a downside with this tiny compact cam: that, with the Mark VI and VII, Sony had sacrificed the brighter lens and "getting close" capabilities for the longer zoom range. But I wanted the extended zoom (my phone camera's fault), so I had to live with that – or find a workaround. So, because the Sony wasn't specifically made for macro, I ventured out to take macro and close-up photos with it all the more so, and I'm pleasantly surprised by the results.

I took this photo (like so many others recently) in the same spot right across the street where I photographed the peashrub (please see the first comment if you like). Here, with these still tightly closed "three poppy graces", the big surprise came on the monitor. While zooming in with the camera, I hadn't even noticed these "farmer" ants and their "livestock", the aphids.

The main sliding I did was adding a discreet paper texture to the background only (in Analog Efex). The background's blur factor is unaltered, and that it was so soft in the first place was a rather unexpected (but very pleasant) result from the 1" sensor (and at F/4.5). I also highlighted the details of the poppies in focus (in DXO PhotoLab 9 with the masking function).

Happy (Sliders) Sunday, dear Flickr friends!

Upper colonnade at the Olympiastadion (Olympic Stadium) in Berlin. Taken on a hot and sunny afternoon this August during a photo walk with Sabine.R. By the time we returned from the Glockenturm (Bell Tower of the Olympic Stadium) the position of the late afternoon sun had created nice shadows up there. This could (and would) have worked very nicely in black and white, but I decided against it. If you take a closer look, you will see a red, a blue, and a yellow decorative line on the upper part of the third column from the left. In b&w those lines would have disappeared. Unfortunately I couldn't find any information about them. My first idea was that the colours represented those of the Olympic rings, but there are only three lines/colours instead of five, so whatever happened to green and black? Maybe the coloured lines don't mean a thing, maybe they are totally mundane, some markings for maintanance, because that part of the upper colonnade is seperated for the staff, catering and maintanance. In fact the area beyond my shooting position was roped off ;-)

Processed in Luminar and Aurora HDR. My first editing (I had already processed this some weeks ago) was almost black and white, very desaturated (except for those coloured lines) and harsh; too harsh, as I see it now, so I gave it a makeover, with more colour and an overall softer look. I hope you like it :-)

Have a great Sunday, dear Flickr friends!

Bis hierher und nicht weiter...

Bitte heranzoomen :-)

It's weekend, so I invite you to take a seat in the golden comfy chair and relax :) And doesn't it look really super inviting and comfortable? I think this could even be one of those extensible multi-purpose armchairs that you can turn into an even comfier chaise longue in less than no time. Perfect. Just imagine all the possibilities :) How about a weekend full of binge watching your favourite TV series or movies, for instance? So bring on the delicious snacks, the full Monty (and did I hear anyone say "pandemic weight gain"? Must be a new torture method invented by the Spanish Inquisition: www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2ncJ6ciGyM), and let the fun begin!

Wishing you all a safe and happy weekend :)

Archaeological Park Carnuntum - Austria

Carnuntum was a Roman army camp on the Danube in the Noricum province and after the 1st century the capital of the Pannonia Superior province, with 50,000 people. Its remains are situated in Lower Austria halfway between Vienna and Bratislava on the "Archaeological Park Carnuntum", extending over the area of 10 km² near today's villages Petronell-Carnuntum and Bad Deutsch-Altenburg. Creepy encounter with the Bogeyman. Or maybe the Boogie Man? Because who says abandoned sanatoriums must be creepy places haunted by the poor souls of the people who once had been treated there? The artists that have decorated a wing of one of the many buildings of this long abandoned lung sanatorium nearby Berlin must have believed the latter, because almost all of the art there is horror-themed, just like this enormous creature consisting of branches (Blair Witch, anyone?). But, wait a minute... There are branches, but there are also cables, and coloured light bulbs. Party lights! And seriously, can a creature who partly consists of colourful party lights be evil? Just imagine him all lit up like a Christmas Tree ;)

This reminded me of an anecdote my mother, magrit k., once had heard during a guided tour at Beelitz Heilstätten (another old, but no longer abandoned sanatorium also nearby Berlin). And that anecdote gives rise to doubts that these sanatoriums were per se sad places, places of pain and suffering: Back in the day (at the end of the 19th / beginning of the 20th century), as you might have guessed, men's and women's dormitories were strictly seperated from each other. But that didn't stop the patients from finding ways to visit each other at night. How? At one point, someone had found access to the underground logistic passages which connected the entire building complex. Those passages were off-limits for the patients, of course, but has "off-limits" ever stopped anyone? So, at least for some time, there there must have been quite a busy nightlife with regular, merry get-togethers among the patients, before the hospital's management noticed what was going on, and put an end to those "indecencies" by locking the passages for anyone except authorised personnel ;)

So maybe also this sanatorium isn't haunted by lost souls, but the spirits that linger there are of a good-natured, happy kind instead. And the creature in my photo isn't the Bogeyman, but DJ Boogie Man. So let the fun begin :)

Bi-Ba Butzemann
