Archaeological Park Carnuntum - Austria

Carnuntum was a Roman army camp on the Danube in the Noricum province and after the 1st century the capital of the Pannonia Superior province, with 50,000 people. Its remains are situated in Lower Austria halfway between Vienna and Bratislava on the "Archaeological Park Carnuntum", extending over the area of 10 km² near today's villages Petronell-Carnuntum and Bad Deutsch-Altenburg. The best way to get around the inner Sydney suburbs is via ferry. My recollection is that this was the ferry to Manly, a beautiful beachside suburb on the North Harbour. On this particular day in 2012 we were headed via ferry to the famous Sydney Zoo.

Winter trees reflecting in the river. This is a 720nm false-color infrared image.

In case you aren't familiar with that process, this image was made with a modified camera. The hot mirror has been removed from the sensor allowing it to record wavelengths beyond the visible light spectrum. Wavelengths smaller than 720nm are then filtered out allowing mostly light below the visible spectrum, in the near infrared, to reach the sensor. The sensor records this as an image with bronze-gold skies and slate gray vegetation. On this image, I then swapped the red and blue channels digitally. This effect usually shows the most pronounced effects with vegetation, but even these winter trees look surreal.

GR III #3: "GR" for GReen ;-) Another one from the (masked) family walk around one of Berlin's most beautiful lakes, the Krumme Lanke. Some lush green, before I'll continue with new architecture from Berlin's inner city (the "cube berlin") next week. I hope this isn't too

vivid and colourful, I know that on some monitors, and especially smartphone or tablet screens, this will probably look much brighter and very vivid, but on my monitor it's just right (yes, I know there are devices / methods for monitor / colour calibration, but... and it's also for Sliders Sunday, so...). Regarding the sliders, I HRDified this in Aurora HDR, tweaked the "Orton Clean" Glow filter in ON1 to my liking, and also tweaked the colours. As I'd mentioned in my description for my previous picture, I must have used "Highlight Weighted Metering" for all the photos I took on that walk, because the bright, sunny and cloudless sky was never blown out, and all the shadows and dark tones were way too dark, but as usual it's always easier to brighten the shadows and dark tones in post, and I was pleasantly surprised at the remarkably clean details and bright tones I was able to get out of the dark areas of the GR III's RAW files.

Happy Sliders Sunday, Everyone, stay safe, stay healthy :-)

Happy Window Wednesday!

I still have so many captures from a photowalk with Flickr friends at an abandoned sanatorium back in March 2018, so I thought it's about time to upload another one :-) This would also make a great Sunday slide, because I've done a lot of processing here, but since today is (Window) Wednesday, and I'd like to upload something else for Sliders Sunday this week, I've decided it's time for this capture's 15 minutes in the limelight ;-)

This is one of the rooms where artists got a chance to transform a former hospital room into something else, something mysterious, creepy even. Since in mid August there will be a new event with artists at this place, this room might look totally different again soon.

Unfortunately I don't really recall any processing steps here, except that I had processed the first version of this capture in Nik, and this, the second version, mostly in Luminar and ON1. One thing you may be interested to know is, though, that the walls in this room originally were of a quite unpleasant, sort of "dirty" yellow. Lots of processing went into this indeed...

I just realised that I haven't uploaded a proper autumn capture, yet, and before it's too late and 'tis the season, again... Here's some fiery red virgin ivy (also known as Virginia Creeper, five-finger, five-leaved ivy, grape ivy, wild vine or wild grape). Same fence as in my 700th photo, just taken more recently ;-) Processed in Luminar 3 and ON1 Photo RAW 2019; I played with several glow effects to enhance the autumn glory of the Parthenocissus quinquefolia leaves.

HFF, and have a beautiful weekend, dear Flickr friends!

That "corner around my corner" across the street is an endless source of beautiful motifs. After the poppies, irises, and other June bloomers, there are now lupines (methinks), dog roses, and the annual Black-eyed Susans. They last super long, well into autumn (and sometimes beyond). About two weeks ago, the first of them popped up in their well-established two different spots in front of the tiny house next to the old, derelict (but heritage-protected and inhabited) house. That old house also provides the somewhat gritty, yet oddly appealing background of crumbling plaster, faded lettering (here only visible in the upper left corner) and decay.

I've photographed (and posted) these coneflowers often over the years, but since there's always a long break between the coneflower-related Flickr posts, I thought I could slip you yet another variation of these sunshiny beauties ;) If you zoom in, you can find a half-hidden tiny critter sitting on the right petal of the centre flower.

In Analog Efex, I added a vintage paper texture (with reduced opacity at 28 on the slider) to the background only.

At the western entrance to Yosemite Valley, Tunnel View is a must-do stop, no matter which direction you approach the park from. Here you can take photos of the most famous panorama of Yosemite Valley, perfectly framed by a forest of pine trees and wide-open skies above. On your right is Bridalveil Fall, plunging off granite cliffs. To the left is the iconic granite rock formation of El Capitan, with Half Dome rising in the background.

#MacroMondays

#Travel

Please zoom in.

The new Macro Monday theme is "Travel". I was prepared to skip, because I'm not much of a traveller. Of course I'm interested in world cultures and different places, especially in being there and going exploring, getting to know everything. But getting there... Packing luggage, getting on the train (and, forbid, the aeroplane), hoping to catch my connection... and then, on repeat once it's finally going home again: horror.

But then, this Thursday, the motif literally came to me. At a favourite park, this little green guy, a buffalo treehopper, had decided to travel on my 9mm wide-angle lens for a while. The treehopper walked around along the lens hood, stopped for a few seconds, walked on, rested, and so on, flexing its tiny wings in between. It stayed on my lens for several minutes, even as I moved the camera around, and only flew away when we walked too far away from its home tree.

Since this cute little critter was a first, I had to take a few photos. The "problem": The lens with the excellent close-up abilities – my 9 mm PanaLeica ultra-wide-angle lens (small, super-light, plastic, but truly fantastic) – was mounted on my OM-3: as the treehopper's travel vehicle ;) So my tiny Sony came to the rescue. It doesn't, per se, do close-ups; at least you can't get truly close to a subject with it, certainly not anything as small as this guy. But the zoom range makes up for that. Here, I probably wasn't even far enough away. I checked the info, and according to that, I took this photo at 32,7mm (= 91,5 mm in full-frame terms). Maybe I could have achieved better "critter magnification" at the full 200 mms, but at that moment, it didn't even occur to me to get farther away from the tiny green fellow.

Since this isn't a true macro in the sense of a 1:1 magnification, I cropped in to meet our MM size requirements. Pixel-wise, this left me with quite a small crop (about 2100x2100 pixels); so I doubled the pixels in Gigapixel for better "viewability". If this should be against our MM rules, I'll accept it if the photo is excluded from the pool; likewise, if the image doesn't fully meet the theme requirements (evoking a feel of travel).

Size info: The treehopper was about the size of my pinky's fingernail, so just about the size of a grown specimen: 9 mm/0,35 inches. The lens's diameter (barrel included), as you can also see in the photo, is 5,5 cm. Since not all of the lens is fully visible in the frame, I'd say that, background included, we are at about 6 x 6 cm/2.3 x 2.3 inches total.

Happy Sliders Sunday, and Happy Macro Monday, too :)

Bondi Beach is an icon of Sydney's too. It also has strong links with Australian photography, from Max Dupain's quintessential Australian beach photograph, "Sunbaker" (1937) www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/collection/works/115.1976/

to Ann Zahalka's magnificent tribute, "The Bathers" (1989). www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/collection/works/96.1990/

This photo has nothing to do with those, but photographic history is important. In the same way, it might seem incongruous to suggest a link between this scene and the work of the first great English colour photographer famous for his beachside postcards, John Hinde (1916-1997). John's work is well known to anyone who collected English postcards during the second half of the 20th century. The printing technique he used (in Italy) created these wonderfully hyper-saturated images. www.johnhindearchive.com/index.php?Seasides#thumb

There is an element of the hyperreal in this photo as well, and that is more to do with the limitations and charms of the Panasonic DMC-FS7 camera itself.
