KOLKATA, INDIA – MARCH 22, 2025: In a heartwarming gesture, a newlywed doctor couple celebrated their two-week wedding milestone by organizing a special lunch for nearly seventy children of migratory Adivasi laborers at Mohan Brickfield near Kolkata, India, on March 22, 2025. The event was attended by relatives, family friends, and the children’s guardians. These laborers, primarily from tribal communities, work at the brickfield for about eight months a year, excluding the monsoon season. The children, aged between two and fifteen, are beneficiaries of a Non-Formal Education system that offers free learning opportunities to those without access to formal schooling. The couple’s celebration brought joy, solidarity, and attention to the importance of education and compassion in community life.
The Jerusalem African Community Center (JACC) was founded to help refugees and stateless people in Israel, most of them families, including 650 children and teenagers born in Israel. Their parents came to Israel from Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Sudan.
A major challenge for the youth of the Jerusalem African Refugee community, is how to properly manage childcare. With most parents out in evenings, cleaning businesses or working in kitchens, children are often at risk of spending long periods of time unsupervised, without proper food, or productive outlets with their time. The community also faces a staggeringly high rate of troubled households, with physical and mental disabilities of parents, owing to their plight of refuge. JACC organizes its own afterschool clubs, hosted within a variety of in-kind venues across Jerusalem, where children can come and spend their evenings after school, receive healthy meals, encounter social workers and spend free time with friends in a productive and supervised environment. These small 'clubs' are especially designed for children from vulnerable households, where risks of neglect are high and social workers are often working with the family for safeguarding purposes.

Our employees collected 3,000 pounds of canned and packaged foods – some they donated themselves and others brought by the public to several recent food drives at PSEG Long Island offices in Nassau and Suffolk counties. During three weeks at the end of October and beginning of November, employees, customers and community members were invited make donations of food and household essentials at Island Harvest drop boxes set up outside our offices, which remain closed to protect public health. Then on Nov. 20, while adhering to social distancing protocols, we helped Island Harvest and Bethpage Federal Credit Union collect an unprecedented 3,157 turkeys, 265 donated by our employees, to be distributed to our neighbors experiencing food insecurity. This is our Seaford location.
