ATLANTA, July 27, 2012 – The America Korea Friendship Society held a memorial today inside the state capitol building, for those Georgians who survived and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice during the Korean War.
Pictured here, Maj. Gen. Jim Butterworth, Georgia’s Adjutant General, and Mr. He-Beom Kim, consul general of the Republic of Korea, stand together with several guest speakers, Korean War veterans and children of the Hope Johns Creek Korean American Youth Orchestra after the memorial service concluded.
The America Korea Friendship Society was founded in June of 1991. It was established with the purpose of promoting understanding and exchange of ideas between Koreans and Americans, and to strengthen the complementary partnership between South Korea and the United States. Today, the 62nd anniversary of the Korean War, a memorial service was held in honor of the 740 Georgia citizens who gave their lives in order to defend the freedom of the South Korean people. They also made it a point to honor all of Georgia’s surviving Korean War vets.
“Today we gather together to honor the heroes who put their lives in harms way to defend a country and people they did not know,” said Kim. “We are here to remember and to pay tribute to the sacrifices of these great champions of freedom.”
