On Friday July 16th, Greenlining Institute Academy Associates came to Valencia Gardens in the Mission District; to learn how OE is connecting low income communities to broadband adoption.
Nothing great has ever been achieved through inaction! That's the thought that came to my mind while out for my afternoon walk yesterday, and spotted someone wearing this shirt. "She believed that she could, so she did."
I'm a sucker for inspirational ideas, and this phrase certainly caught my attention! After I got back home, I tried to remember the exact wording of the phrase, and so I had to use Google to make sure that I got it entirely right. And in a wonderful turn of coincidence, it turns out this particular shirt is sold in a small boutique clothing store not far from where I live!
Not only that, but it also involves a wonderful story of a mother / daughter team creating a retail store with active wear:
A little bit of background from the site:
----
Candie Bower from a young age has been active in both recreational and competitive sports. She has been a Certified Personal Trainer for the past 17 years in the Guelph community and surrounding areas.
Mattie Bower has been in dance since she was 3 years old and has competed in dance since the age of 5 years old. She continues her passion in dance as an instructor, choreographer in and around Guelph.
It was a natural transition for Candie to become an owner with this activewear/athleisure apparel business opportunity when approached in 2015. Candie along with her daughter Mattie and their team/family have always been committed to having this men's and women's activewear store be more than just a clothing store.
"It's all the amazing, wonderful people we get to outfit and have fun meeting, connecting with and getting involved in the community."
They love sharing their passions in fitness, fashion, working hard, adding creativity and having a lot of fun along the way.
---
It's a wonderful story of initiative and innovation, and as someone who believes in acton-based empowerment, the phrase on the shirt immediately caught my eye! I can imagine that at moments along the way, the mom/daughter combination worked hard to ensure they didn't just talk about their plans to create a business - but acted upon it. They believed they could do it - so they did!
Empowerment and action, wrapped together in a dream achieved. Powerful stuff! Hey - do this - give them an order! Buy the shirt here. It would make for a wonderful gift for that someone special in your life - or for yourself. Tell them Jim sent you! (I don't know these people, and just came to realize their store is very close to my home once I started searching for the origin of the phrase on the shirt!)
In my mind, once I saw the phrase, I began to turn the idea behind it into something I could use in my Daily Inspiration post - the result of which was ""Believe that you can so that you know you will do!" Look, I've come to believe that action is a critical component of success. Merely talking about the future or planning for it is insufficient - one must take concrete steps to shape the desired outcome. That's why this mother/daughter story is so wonderful - it's an acton-based empowerment story. I can imagine somewhere along the way, the mom/daughter combination worked hard to ensure they didn't just talk about their plans to create a business - they acted upon it.
Empowerment and action, wrapped together in a dream achieved. Powerful stuff!
Believing that you can do something is a powerful step in ensuring you start doing the things to do that thing. Otherwise, you'll postpone acting because of lingering denial, uncertainty, and complacency. That will lead lead to missed opportunities, vulnerability to competitors, and ultimately, failure.
Something drove Candie Bower to actually do - taking the steps to create a custom clothing boutique - and I can imagine the very phrase on the shirt reflects her mindset.
She believed that she could, and so she did!
