A group of junior and senior Community Health majors presented proposals for community-based health promotion and disease prevention programs to a panel of professional at the Nassau County Executive and Legislature Building. The students, all enrolled in Dr. Corinne Kyriacou’s Planning, Implementation and Evaluation of Community Health Programs course (HPFS 116) worked all semester learning about the health and housing challenges of elderly Long Island residents. Their assignment was to conduct a needs assessment of an assigned community, and then using the primary data collected – in conjunction with secondary research they examined simultaneously – design data-driven health interventions to address identified problems. Every semester this course is offered, Dr. Kyriacou partners with different local community-based organizations so students can learn an on-the-ground, applied field perspective, as well as a classroom-based academic and theoretical perspective. This semester the partners were FEGS Health and Human Service System, whichserves New York City and Long Island, and the Mid-Island Y/JCC based in Plainview, NY. Students designed needs assessment surveys and collected data from 100 elderly members of several neighborhood program and, based on the data, decided to focus on the following four problem areas for their program proposals: mobility, nutrition, fitness and social isolation. The presentations were capped off by a surprise visit from County Executive Edward Mangano.

Happy Geoffrey is a Uganda Red Cross volunteer helping screen thousands of people who cross the border each day from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), close to the epicentre of the Ebola outbreak. On busy market days, up to 3,500 people cross this border point in a day. The risk of the spread of Ebola remains high as cases continue to increase in neighbouring DRC.

The IFRC, through local Red Cross National Societies, has rapidly scaled up community-level activities in the surrounding provinces as well as priority counties bordering DR Congo, to encircle and contain the current outbreak. 1,400 Red Cross volunteers have been mobilized in Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda and Burundi to support preparedness and containment efforts.

UK aid is supporting the DRC Government and Ministry of Health as well as partners including the World Health Organisation, UNICEF, WFP, UNHCR and the DRC Red Cross to help tackle the Ebola outbreak, treating those affected by it and stop it from spreading.

UK support to the Red Cross is helping provide regional preparedness, screening, treatment for those suffering from the disease, safe and dignified burials for those who have succumbed to it, and community awareness training to prevent it from spreading.

Protest Is Part of the National ‘Families Belong Together’ Day of Action With More Than 710 Events Nationwide

-- On Saturday, June 30th, [residents will rally at various locations as part of the Families Belong Together national day of action to protest the Trump Administration’s policy of forcibly separating children from their parents, the detention of families, and the fact that the Trump Administration has failed to reunite thousands of children with their parents.

WHEN: Saturday, June 30th. [TIME AM/PM TIME ZONE]

WHERE: [LOCATION]. [ADDRESS]

The [CITY] protest is part of a National “Families Belong Together” Day of Action featuring more than 710 events in all 50 states and an anchor protest in Lafayette Square in Washington DC. Tens of thousands of people are expected to participate across the country. Specifically, the protesters will demand that the Trump Administration:

•Reunite families now. Permanently end family separation and immediately reunify those that have been separated. ICE must release parents immediately so that ORR can reunify them with their children.

•End family detention. Children and families deserve due process, not indefinite imprisonment. Children do not belong in baby cages and internment-like camps. Family incarceration is not the solution to family separation.

•End ‘Zero Humanity.’ Reverse the Trump administration’s policy that created this crisis and chaos to begin with. Parents should not be criminally prosecuted for doing what all parents do, which is bring their children to safety. This horrible nightmare for families will only end when Trump permanently stops his 100% prosecution policy.

Say it loud, say it clear,

Immigrants are welcome here!

Say it loud, say it clear,

Refugees are welcome here!

Repeat“Courage” (listen):

Courage, my friend, you do not walk alone.

We will, walk with you, and sing your spirit home.

*Replace “Courage” with other words like “families” “immigrants” or “children”

When immigrant rights are under attack,

What will we do? Unite, fight back!

When refugee rights are under attack,

What will we do? Unite, fight back!

Repeat“May The Life I Lead” (listen):

Let the life I lead, speak for me. (x2)

When I get to the end of the road, and lay down my heavy load,

Let the life I lead, speak for me.

El pueblo unido

jamás será vencido!

(The people united, will never be defeated)

RepeatTo the tune of “Blessings” by Chance the Rapper (listen):

We gonna rise up, rise up till it’s won (x2)

When the people rise up, the powers come down (x2)

They try to stop us, but we keep comin’ back (x2)

Love, not hate, makes America great!

Repeat

“We are Family” by Sister Sledge

We are family, I got all my people with me

We are family, Get up ev'rybody and sing

We are family, I got all my people with me

We are family, Get up ev'rybody and sing
