The [CITY] protest is part of a National “Families Belong Together” Day of Action featuring more than 710 events in all 50 states and an anchor protest in Lafayette Square in Washington DC. Tens of thousands of people are expected to participate across the country. Specifically, the protesters will demand that the Trump Administration:
•Reunite families now. Permanently end family separation and immediately reunify those that have been separated. ICE must release parents immediately so that ORR can reunify them with their children.
•End family detention. Children and families deserve due process, not indefinite imprisonment. Children do not belong in baby cages and internment-like camps. Family incarceration is not the solution to family separation.
•End ‘Zero Humanity.’ Reverse the Trump administration’s policy that created this crisis and chaos to begin with. Parents should not be criminally prosecuted for doing what all parents do, which is bring their children to safety. This horrible nightmare for families will only end when Trump permanently stops his 100% prosecution policy.

The Uganda Red Cross has trained community-based volunteers to educate communities about Ebola, and to recognize the signs of the virus to alert the authorities for follow up.
Through Uganda Red Cross’ extensive network of community-based volunteers, a powerful surveillance system has been set up, in coordination with other actors and the Ministry of Health. This system helps stop the virus’ spread, detecting outbreaks before they happen.
With the help of the ‘Kobo Collect’ Mobile App, these cases are logged and are instantly shared with local health authorities for rapid action. If a case is detected the person can receive prompt treatment and the disease can be contained. This enables the reporting of any epidemic alerts in real time with low costs and resources.
Only weeks after the training, volunteers like Mugenyi Adam, have already sent out alerts to their supervisor.
“I am proud that the community trusts me already and in case of any suspicions, I am the first one they call. This is what makes me proud – the response is so, so fast.”
UK aid is supporting the Red Cross to provide community awareness training like this, as well as to provide safe and dignified burials for victims of the Ebola virus disease.

Karungi Shamillah, 27, has been a Red Cross volunteer for four months in her own community in Majada, Uganda, close to the border of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Shamillah has been trained to conduct community-based surveillance, educating communities about Ebola while also recognize the signs of the virus to alert the authorities for follow up and care of people with such signs.
“I’m encouraging handwashing in my community. We have an outbreak in neighbouring Congo and when we take these actions, it helps prevent it from coming into our community,” says Shamillah.
“Now I have more friends - everyone knows me and they trust me.”
Launched in 2017 with funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), IFRC’s Community Epidemic and Pandemic Preparedness Program (CP3) scales up efforts towards global health security. The program strengthens the ability of communities, National Societies and other partners in 8 target countries to prevent, detect and respond to disease threats and play a significant role in preparing for future risks.
UK aid is now also supporting the Red Cross to provide provide safe and dignified burials for victims of the Ebola virus disease in DRC, as well as training like this, treatment for those suffering with from Ebola and community awareness training to help prevent the spread of the outbreak.

In March 2020, MedGlobal conducted its first large-scale medical brigade in Cúcuta, Colombia, a border city that has become an epicenter of Venezuelan migration. As Colombia braced for the arrival of COVID-19, MedGlobal volunteers provided basic medical care to nearly 1,500 venezuelan refugees and internally displaced Colombians living on the outskirts of Cúcuta.
This medical brigade was an extension of MedGlobal’s ongoing work in Colombia which includes an outpatient clinic serving Venezuelan refugees and a first contact clinic at the Francisco de Paula Santander International Bridge.

A group of junior and senior Community Health majors presented proposals for community-based health promotion and disease prevention programs to a panel of professional at the Nassau County Executive and Legislature Building. The students, all enrolled in Dr. Corinne Kyriacou’s Planning, Implementation and Evaluation of Community Health Programs course (HPFS 116) worked all semester learning about the health and housing challenges of elderly Long Island residents. Their assignment was to conduct a needs assessment of an assigned community, and then using the primary data collected – in conjunction with secondary research they examined simultaneously – design data-driven health interventions to address identified problems. Every semester this course is offered, Dr. Kyriacou partners with different local community-based organizations so students can learn an on-the-ground, applied field perspective, as well as a classroom-based academic and theoretical perspective. This semester the partners were FEGS Health and Human Service System, whichserves New York City and Long Island, and the Mid-Island Y/JCC based in Plainview, NY. Students designed needs assessment surveys and collected data from 100 elderly members of several neighborhood program and, based on the data, decided to focus on the following four problem areas for their program proposals: mobility, nutrition, fitness and social isolation. The presentations were capped off by a surprise visit from County Executive Edward Mangano.
