The day before I left, Kheta became an uncle, and as joyous as the new addition to the family was, it also posed a very real challenge. While Love was abundant in the family, food was not.
As I met the new human being, I thought to myself where he would be in a couple of decades when he was Kheta's age. At the same time, a more pragmatic thought struck me: where would Kheta be? New beginnings were upon us.
I was back in Cape Town on the of the day finals. Days leading up to the it, I had convinced a venue owner to share space, and found a sponsor to develop and print the five roles. I bought thin rope and about one-hundred clothing clips and hung the photos till the game was over, showing the same un-edited photos you see here, sharing the legend of Kheta's brilliance and promise. The exhibition was called 'Contrasting Narratives', and people from all walks of life came to support, visually feeling for 'the other side'.
By the end of the day enough money was raised to establish a unique scholarship which not only paved the path towards Kheta's dream, but did so in a matter which overcame the barriers students like himself, living in the most impoverished of communities, struggle to overcome.
The scholarship was holistic in nature and aimed at certifying Kheta as a professional computer technician, covering everything from Kheta's tuition to study, to his transportation to and from college, as well as his daily nutrition. Even the logistics of registration were taken into consideration, understanding full well that he didn't have access to the internet, a phone, or airtime to even begin looking for a school to enroll at.
Over a year has passed since I met Kheta. His year old nephew remains strong, well-fed, and surrounded with Love.
As for Kheta, he is currently paving the path for his new life. This month, he graduates from college as computer technician, and though the steps he has taken in the last year have been leaps and bounds, the steps he is going to take in the years to come promise to cover even more ground for himself, his family, and his community.
