The Singapore Zoo (Chinese: ?????? ; Malay: 'Taman Haiwan Singapura'; Tamil: ??????????? ????????? ????????????), formerly known as the Singapore Zoological Gardens and commonly known locally as the Mandai Zoo, occupies 28 hectares (0.28 km?) of land on the margins of Upper Seletar Reservoir within Singapore's heavily forested central catchment area. The zoo was built at a cost of S$9m granted by the government of Singapore and opened on 23 June 1973. It is operated by Wildlife Reserves Singapore, who also manage the neighbouring Night Safari and the Jurong BirdPark. There are about 315 species of animal in the zoo, of which some 16% are considered threatened species. The zoo attracts about 1.4 million visitors a year.
From the beginning, Singapore Zoo followed the modern trend of displaying animals in naturalistic, 'open' exhibits, i.e. with hidden barriers, behind moats and shrubbery etc. It also houses the largest captive colony of orangutans in the world. In 1977, primatologist Dr Francine Neago lived inside a cage with eighteen orangutans for six months to study their behavior and communication.

History

The conception of the Singapore Zoo dates from 1969. At the time, the Public Utilities Board (PUB) decided to use some of its land holdings around reservoirs for parks and open recreational facilities. The then Executive Chairman of PUB, Dr Ong Swee Law, set aside 88 hectares of land for the construction of a zoological garden.
In 1970, consultants and staff were hired, and in 1971, the construction of the basic 50 enclosures started. Animals were collected from dealers and donated by sponsors. The Director of the Colombo Zoo in Sri Lanka, Lyn de Alwis, was hired as a special consultant to work out problems inherent in tropical zoos.
On 23 June 1973, the Singapore Zoo opened its gates for the first time with a collection of 270 animals from over 72 species, and a staff of 130. By 1990, 1,600 animals from more than 160 species lived in social groups, housed in 65 landscaped exhibits with boundaries conceived to look as natural as possible.

Today, the zoo is a model of the 'open zoo' concept. The animals are kept in spacious, landscaped enclosures, separated from the visitors by either dry or wet moats. The moats are concealed with vegetation or dropped below the line of vision. In the case of dangerous animals which can climb very well, moat barriers are not used. Instead, these animals are housed in landscaped glass-fronted enclosures.
The zoo has not expanded beyond the original 28 hectares. However, 40 hectares of secondary forest were later developed into the Night Safari. The remaining undeveloped land has been kept as wooded land. This and the waters of Upper Seletar Reservoir contribute to the Zoo, giving it a sense of natural, unrestricted space.
Among various attractions that the zoo offers,one highlight is the "Breakfast with an Orangutan" programme that allows visitors to meet and interact closely with the orangutans in the zoo, amongst which includes the famous primate matriarch Ah Meng, (died on February 8, 2008) who was an icon of the Singapore tourism industry. Animal shows, as well as token feedings coupled with live commentaries by keepers, are also the daily staple in the Singapore zoo.
Education and conservation
The Wildlife Healthcare & Research Centre was opened in March 2006 as part of the zoo's efforts in wildlife conservation. The centre further underscores Singapore Zoo and Night Safari’s commitment to conservation research, providing the infrastructure for the parks and overseas zoological partners to better execute their research programmes.
The zoo also embarked on various rescue and conservation efforts to protect wildlife.

The zoo also offers various modes of rides available within the premises: trams, animals, boat, pony and horse carriage rides. Additional modes of transportation which can only be rented include: strollers, wagon and wheelchairs.
Friends of the Zoo
The zoo also has a "friends of the zoo" programme, where people can sign up for a yearly pass which grants them special privileges such as:

* A free quarterly "Wildlife wonders" magazine
* 10% discount at some participating retail outlets

There are three event venues available in the zoo, Forest Lodge, Pavilion-By-the-Lake and Garden Pavilion. There are also three cocktail venues, Elephants of Asia, Tiger Trek and Treetops Trail. The Singapore Zoo also facilitates birthday parties and weddings.
Incidents
On 13 November 2008, two of three white Bengal tigers mauled a zoo cleaner to death after the man jumped into a moat surrounding their enclosure.[2]

* Steve Irwin, the animal activist and conservationalist known as "The Crocodile Hunter", admired the Singapore Zoo greatly, adopting it as the 'sister zoo' to the Australia Zoo. He was at the Singapore Zoo in 2006 to officiate the opening of the Australian outback exhibit.
* The Singapore Zoo is the first zoo in the world to breed a polar bear in the tropics. Inuka was conceived on 26 December 1990.

We took the kids tonight to see fire twirling and ice sculptures one town over. It was 24 degrees but I managed to get some shots in before we were all too frozen...lol. This girl caught me snapping a shot.

I went with my parents to our terrain in the mountain, so I didn´t want to lose the chance of picking up some wheels, place them under the trees we cared of when I was a child and take some photos. Very difficult lighting conditions there, but place was worth the effort.

This is the first of our commitment quilts.
As part of our family tradition, whenever someone gets married a wedding quilt is created. Family and friends are given a chance to express themselves artistically by adding a square to the quilt.
Once everyone completes and returns their patches, they are then taken to an Amish family in Michigan who hand-sews them all together. The completed quilt is then hung up at the reception for everyone to see.
As it turned out, we got exactly enough patches back by the deadline to make two full quilts. If you want to see any patch in detail, mouse-over it and click the link that pops up.
We also got four extra patches, but not in time enough to make the quilt, you can view them beginning here.
When we saw them for the first time at the reception, we were just blown away at all the love and creativity that went into each of them. Thank you so much to everyone who contributed!
As cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Sidhu fired his first salvo at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) saying Arvind Kejriwal wanted to use him as a “piece of decoration” during elections, AAP’s Punjab co-incharge Sanjay Singh, in an interview in Ludhiana on Thursday, said Sidhu is not speaking the truth as he (Sidhu) had himself said he is not selfish to contest from his wife’s seat and would campaign for the party in the entire state.
Sanjay said, " I am surprised by his U-turn. I had a direct discussion with Sidhu and he had said he would join us in Punjab’s interests. He said it is a fight between ‘dharm’ and ‘adharm’ (good versus evil) and he wants to uproot the corrupt Badals. I still cannot forget what he then said. I quote him, “Mujhe Mahdev ka adesh ho gaya hai. Mein AAP ke saath Punjab ke liye laruga (I have been ordered by God Mahadev. I will fight alongside AAP to save Punjab)”.
"The AAP is not worried. We are only gaining ground in Punjab. Our rallies are only getting bigger. The nervousness being betrayed by our rival parties is the proof. But it is for Sidhu to answer who is he trying to benefit by forming a fourth front. Even a child will not believe that a party being formed a few months before elections has any commitment. It will only lead to division of votes and vitiate the environment of the state before elections. Instead of attacking the Badals and their mafia raj, Sidhu is busy attacking the AAP and helping them", said Sanjay.

Historic Formula 3 was about to Take on the Might of The Brands Hatch GP Loop Featuring Cars from the Classic Formula 3 Era Such as The March 783 The Chevron B43 and The Royal RP27.
Thease Machines May Look Docile but When Racing they put on a Huge Display of Both Power and Speed to Rival even that of their Formula 1 Counterparts of the Era.
Let's See How The Race went and Who was Able To take Victory and Stand on the Top Step of the Podium.
In First Place was (Andy Smith) In his March 783 with A Lap Time of 1:42.113 and An Average Speed of 82.64mph.
Very Fast and Very Consistent Driving from Andy to Take Victory and End Up on the Top Step of the Podium. Congratulations Andy Well Deserved.
In Second Place was (Murray Shepherd) in His Van Diemen RF82 with A Lap Time of 1:44.583 And an Average Speed of 81.75mph.
Another Fantastic Drive from Murray to keep The Pace up and Defend Second Place from the Others Drivers All Fighting to take it away. Well Done Murray.
In Third Place was (Ben Tilley) In His March 743 with A Lap Time of 1:43.571 And an Average Speed of 81.75mph.
Matching The Speed of Murray and Still Keeping Him on His Toes in order to Try and Take that Second Place Away from Him.

Classic Formula 3 Has Shown us Three Capable Drivers who Battled it out and Came out Victorious in the Race. Andy Murray and Ben will have to Keep Working Hard to Defend Their Respective Places.

Its Time for Historic Formula Ford 2000 and To see who Can Take The Victory in This Race. With Cars that Are capable of Nearly 100mph Around The Grand Prix Circuit it will be Interesting to see who is Brave Enough to Push Their Ford to its Limits.
In First Place was (Graham Fennymore) in His Reynard SF81 with A Lap Time of 1:35.793 And an Average Speed of 89.99mph. A Fierce Drive with Speedy Reactions to Claim the Victory. Incredible Work Graham.
In Second Place was (Ian Pearson) in His Royal RP30 with A Lap Time of 1:36.029 And an Average Speed of 89.74mph.
Another Super Drive From Ian with Speeds and Performance Very Close to Graham. Both Drivers Pushing Hard and Not giving an Inch Thought the Race.
In Third Place was (Andrew Storer) in his Reynard SF79 with A Lap Time of 1:37.187 and An Average Speed of 88.64mph.
Awesome Work from Andrew Despite Finishing Second in the Previous Race. Keep Pushing Hard.

In First Place was (James Claridge) in his Chevron B23 with A Lap Time of 1:31.148 and An Average Speed of 84.64mph.
A Fantastic Job from James in a Machine that is so fast And Yet Looked so At Home on the Race Track with Him Behind the Wheel.
Congratulations James A Fine Job Indeed.
In Second Place was (Mark Richardson) in His Lola T290 with A Lap Time of 1:30.458 and An Average Speed of 84.62mph.
Another Drive by A True Racing Driver and Even Eric Broadly would Have been Proud To see that One. Fantastic Work Mark.
In Third Place was (Robert Shaw) in His Chevron B19 with A Lap Time of 1:33.032 And an Average Speed of 82.62mph.
Very Well Done from Robert Who Defended Third Place Like his Life Depended on it.

yesterday at both St. Patrick's with Fr. Paul O'Brien and St. Mary of the Annunciation with Fr. Carlos Urbina, both in Lawrence.
