“Brigid of Kildare”, accompanied by members of StoP (Swords to Ploughshares), delivered a copy of the Downpatrick Declaration, a St Brigid peace cross and a letter to Minister Simon Coveney at the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin on St Brigid’s Day, 1st February 2022.
Brigid arrived dramatically by horse and cart and made a statement about her commitment to peace from the front steps of the DFA building on St Stephen’s Green before delivering the Declaration, the peace cross and the letter to the Minister.
The reason for Brigid’s appearance at the DFA is to ensure that St Brigid’s Day (including the new public holiday in the Republic beginning in 2023) is used to support Ireland’s role in promoting peace.
The letter delivered by Brigid on behalf of StoP stated that Ireland should not support militaristic responses to current tensions over Ukraine from Europe and NATO and that we should use our neutrality to assist dialogue and the de-escalation of tensions.
St Brigid, together with St Patrick and St Colmcille, helped inspire the Downpatrick Declaration initiated by StoP, Afri and INNATE. www.downpatrickdeclaration.com/ The Declaration reminds us of Ireland’s history of conflict and our commitment to the exclusively peaceful resolution of conflict in both the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement and Article 29 of the Irish Constitution.
St Brigid acted for peace and social justice throughout her life and we must use her example to support Ireland’s active commitment to peace and global justice and to resist and refuse Irish involvement in arms production, the arms trade and militarisation.
Tensions over Ukraine and Russian military exercises off the coast of Ireland must not be used to justify the militarisation of Irish and EU foreign policy and expenditure on military responses to political conflicts.
Ireland should work instead for human security and real disarmament and use our resources to address issues such as climate change, human displacement caused by war, and global inequality.

PATRICK AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. – Soldiers from Headquarters & Headquarters Company, 143d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), demonstrated the Army Reserve’s commitment to be the most capable, combat ready and lethal federal Reserve force in U.S. history during a field training event conducted April 8, 2017, at Patrick Air Force Base, Fla.
“America’s armed forces look to the Army Reserve to provide quick access to trained and ready forces that our active duty partners need to initiate, sustain and prevail in major operations,” said 1st Lt. Jonathan R. Clark, company commander, HHC, 143d ESC. “The 143d [ESC] supports this critical role by conducting immersive and engaging Battle Assemblies that test our capabilities at the individual Soldier level.”
Approximately 300 Soldiers demonstrated their marksmanship skills during a weapons qualification event at Patrick AFB’s Combat Arms Training Facility. The 143d ESC partnered with the U.S. Air Force 45th Space Wing to use this $8.5 million facility to train and qualify the troops with the M9 Pistol, M4 Carbine, M16 Rifle and the M249 light machine gun.
While awaiting their turn on the firing line, the troops participated in various classes and practical exercises that enhanced their fundamentals of marksmanship, radio communications, medical care under fire and other essential skills for all Soldiers to master regardless of their rank, assignment or specialty.
“Today’s global security environment is growing in scope and complexity,” said Clark. “The Army Reserve is rapidly evolving to adapt to this ever-changing environment, and the 143d [ESC] will be better prepared to overcome complex challenges that threaten our nation by fortifying the fundamentals of a warfighting force.”

REMOVAL OF TRANSURANIC WASTE FROM INL WAS A COMMITMENT IN THE COURT ORDERED IDAHO SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT SIGNED BY DOE, THE STATE OF IDAHO, AND THE U.S. NAVY IN 1995. THE FIRST SHIPMENT OF TRANSURANIC WASTE TO WIPP LEFT INL ON APRIL 27, 1999 AND THE LAST, THE 563RD, ON OCTOBER 24, 2002. THE TOTAL AMOUNT OF TRANSURANIC WASTE SHIPPED WAS 3,101.1 CUBIC METERS IN 14,909 FIFTY FIVE-GALLON DRUMS.

My annual weekend trip to London, which gives me Saturday afternoon, evening and Sunday morning out and about wandering where ever I want to go. My daughters (and a coach load of ladies) are on the trip so I do have some other commitments on Saturday evening. Travelling at the beginning of November we were earlier than previous years so, although the decorations were in place, London wasn't as colourful as previous visits. I had decided to walk across to Little Venice as it isn't far from our hotel at Marble Arch and I hadn't been before. Having walked along the canal at home all summer chasing wildlife I wasn't impressed by a canal in London, it was windy so no reflections in the water and I left fairly soon. I'd seen Paddington Rail Station on the map not far away so I headed there. I got my camera out for the first time, it was fairly quiet and there weren't any restrictions on cameras (as far as I could see) I made eye contact with quite a few of the staff and smiled and nodded, as I would back home, and got quite a pleasant reception, no worries about me and my backpack and camera. I was pleasantly surprised at how clean the station was. I did a nine mile circle taking in Hyde Park , Piccadilly, Regent Street and Oxford Street. The London to Brighton run was on the following day so Regent Street was shut with many of the cars and loads of other transport related stuff on display. It was busy and the light was going so I didn't bother taking many photos. The cars were leaving Hyde Park just down the road from our hotel at dawn on Sunday but I couldn't muster enough enthusiasm to walk down even though I was up early. I grabbed some window and people shots on Oxford Street. Some of the Christmas displays were already in place, most notably Selfridge's, some of the displays were behind temporary work barriers as a new pavement was being laid and I couldn't get to the window, I decided to go back on Sunday morning and climb over them-which I did, Oxford street was very quiet just after 8.00 am and I got my shots.
On Sunday I walked a ten mile circle out to the Thames South Bank, on to the Shard and Tower Bridge. I went across in to The City and wound my way back to Hyde Park. We had really good journeys both ways and the coach driver did the journey home without a break, he was able to get back to the depot and park up inside his 4 1/2 hours driving time which I think is a first in 16 years. I walked home from Slaithwaite and rounded my weekend mileage to twenty miles, this is the furthest I've walked since I had reconstructive surgery on my right foot at the end of February. I wasn't particularly fired up for the trip after one of the most difficult years I can remember-and that's saying something-so I struggled to find something to get enthused about which is probably why I didn't take any photos at Little Venice and very few at Regents Street.

“We’re careening off the runway and into a field. Oh no, I think. Oh, God! Oh no! This is actually happening. We actually might die,” said team member Moe Wagner.
No one died, and everyone was safe, as a direct result of the work of NATCA-represented Airports Division (ARP) members Irene Porter and Ernest Gubry, who initiated, designed, planned, environmentally cleared, and funded the construction of a fully compliant runway safety area (RSA) at Willow Run.

6/30/2012 - As part of its continuing commitment to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs, Eastern Washington University sponsored the First Robotics exhibition in Riverfront Park as a part of 2012 Hoopfest. The teams, which came from came from area High Schools, built robots that shot basketballs through hoops set at various heights and then manuevered them onto platforms. Points were awarded for which hoop the ball was shot through and how many robots they could park on the elevated platforms in a head-to-head competition. Photo by John Demke.
From 17th to 20th November, Geneva Call held in Geneva its Third Meeting of Signatories to the Deeds of Commitment and gathered 70 high-level representatives – political leaders, commanders and officers and legal advisers – of 35 armed non-State actors (ANSAs) coming from 14 different countries including Syria, Burma/Myanmar, Sudan, Philippines and Somalia as well as local partners. Most are signatories to at least one of Geneva Call’s Deeds of Commitment, but some non-signatory ANSAs also attended.
