This place was an abandoned blast furnace that had a full barrier and walkway around it and was a tourist attraction up to a certain time of day. It also had powerful coloured lights all over it to show off the structure and its internals but we decided to visit outside normal hours and climb in. We accessed the attraction but only so far as some of the levels were very rusty. Martin stayed outside and photographed the perimeter and unfortunately fell and broke his camera.

Zoo Atlanta Wednesday, May 4

Training is a very valuable tool that we use with the pandas to accomplish many tasks. One behavior that we have trained with Lun Lun is to have her get her cub and bring him/her with her when shifting to a different part of the building. It is quite neat to watch her understand the command and execute the behavior. We first open a shift door and ask both Lun Lun and Po to shift. This will help Po learn what the shifting command means as he grows. Normally Lun Lun comes right in, whereas Po continues to sleep, usually on the climbing structure. Next, we give Lun Lun the command to bring the cub in with her and she goes into action. First, she vocalizes many times and walks under his resting spot to get him to follow her. If he does not follow, she will climb up and get him. Once he is on the ground, he will fall in line and shift with her. Hopefully, Po will catch on quickly and learn to shift without Lun Lun’s assistance.

Pilot Officer Jiri Kucera

Kucera was a pre-war pilot with the Czechoslovakian Air Force. Escaping to France shortly after the German occupation of his country in 1938, he joined l’Armee de l’Air. During May – June 1940, he destroyed 3 enemy aircraft.

After France surrendered, Kucera made his way to England and joined the RAF. Posted to 238 Squadron, he destroyed 3 more enemy aircraft during the Battle of Britain. In May 1941 Kucera was posted to 313 (Czech) Squadron, flying operationally until June 1943.

Returning to operations with 544 Squadron in 1944, he flew a Mosquito on reconnaissance missions until 1945.

After the war Kucera returned to Czechoslovakia.

Luftwaffe Precision Aircraft Clock:

Jiri Kucera was given this precision aircraft clock from one of the Luftwaffe fighters he shot down during the war.

Clocks from enemy aircraft were especially prized souvenirs throughout the war.
