Altamonte Springs, Fla. - More than 50 Army Reserve Soldiers from Mission Support Element, Headquaters & Headquarters Company, 143d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), joined more than 1,000 participants in the Orlando Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk Sept. 9, 2018, at Cranes Roost Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

The event honored New York City firefighter Stephen Siller who made the ultimate sacrifice during the 9/11 attacks. Carrying more than 60 pounds of firefighting equipment, Siller ran from Brooklyn Tunnel--closed as a security measure--to the World Trade Center where he laid his life to save the lives of others.

Siller's story inspired nearly half of the 143d ESC Soldiers to don ruck sacks and run alongside hundreds of first responders wearing their full gear.

One 143d ESC Soldier, Spc. Andy Meyreles, honored his civilian and military profession during the race. Serving as an Ammunition and Stock Control and Accounting Specialist, the Hialeah, Fla., native put on his Orange County Fire Rescue helmet, jacket and pants over his Army physical fitness uniform. Meyreles' choice of attire paid homage to all service members and first responders who follow Siller's legendary example.

Command Module Endeavour

Apollo 15 was the fourth successful moon landing mission and the only Apollo mission with an all-U.S. Air Force crew. Col. David R. Scott, Lt. Col. James B. Irwin, and Maj. Alfred M. Worden flew this spacecraft, named Endeavour, to the moon in July 1971. The command module is named after the ship that carried Capt. James Cook on his famous 18th century scientific voyage.

Apollo 15 focused mainly on lunar science, and was the first mission to use a lunar rover vehicle. The crew spent four days traveling to the moon, then Scott and Irwin landed the lunar module Falcon on the moon’s surface. They spent 67 hours exploring and setting up scientific experiments. Worden remained in orbit aboard Endeavour conducting experiments and photographing the moon. Just over 12 days after launch, the crew returned safely, splashing down in the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii.

Project Apollo’s main goal was to land astronauts on the moon and return them safely to Earth. Beating the Soviets to the moon in the “space race” of the 1960s was an important part of the Cold War competition between the U.S. and the Soviet Union for prestige and world leadership in science and technology. The U.S. won the moon race when Apollo 11 landed on the moon and returned to Earth in July 1969. Apollo achieved six lunar landings through 1972, and 12 astronauts walked on the moon. Of the 29 astronauts who flew Apollo missions, 14 were Air Force officers or had Air Force experience.

The command module is on loan from the National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.

STUTTGART, Germany - Project officers from U.S. Africa Command’s Counternarcotics and Law Enforcement Assistance Division participated in an orientation and hands-on demonstration, March 10, 2010, where they learned the specifics of a four-piece drug test kit, capable of testing for six different illegal substances in solid, tablet, liquid, or powder form. The demonstration, which took place at the command’s headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany was also filmed for use as a teaching aid to familiarize African law enforcement officials with drug test kits. Drug kits can have a tremendous impact in the hands of law enforcement officers in Africa, serving as a quick tool for law enforcement officials to confirm whether an unknown substance is illegal and needs to be further tested. Early detection can eliminate time and money being spent to do high dollar analysis in laboratories for substances that turn out to be innocuous. AFRICOM’s Counternarcotics Division is planning to assist several African nations with developing this capability in 2010. (U.S. AFRICOM photo)

CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait - On Mar. 22 here, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Michael Harden, command engineer, 143d ESC, was honored with the de Fleury Medal by the Corps of Engineers. The tradition was started when the Corps of Engineers implemented the US Army Regimental system; the senior Engineer leadership sought a method for the Corps of Engineers to honor those individuals who have provided significant contributions to Army Engineering. With an emphasis on the history, customs, and traditions of the Corps, the Engineer Regiment instituted an award that tied in with the beginnings of the nation and the Army Corps of Engineers.

The day was capped off by the promotion of Staff Sgt. Eric Cintron, information assurance, to Sgt. 1st Class; Master Sgt. Nelson being awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his work here as FRAGO manager and Sgt. Teresa Munoz, human resources, receiving accolades for scoring 300 on her physical fitness test and being honored as Soldier of the week.
