Altamonte Springs, Fla. - More than 50 Army Reserve Soldiers from Mission Support Element, Headquaters & Headquarters Company, 143d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), joined more than 1,000 participants in the Orlando Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk Sept. 9, 2018, at Cranes Roost Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

The event honored New York City firefighter Stephen Siller who made the ultimate sacrifice during the 9/11 attacks. Carrying more than 60 pounds of firefighting equipment, Siller ran from Brooklyn Tunnel--closed as a security measure--to the World Trade Center where he laid his life to save the lives of others.

Siller's story inspired nearly half of the 143d ESC Soldiers to don ruck sacks and run alongside hundreds of first responders wearing their full gear.

One 143d ESC Soldier, Spc. Andy Meyreles, honored his civilian and military profession during the race. Serving as an Ammunition and Stock Control and Accounting Specialist, the Hialeah, Fla., native put on his Orange County Fire Rescue helmet, jacket and pants over his Army physical fitness uniform. Meyreles' choice of attire paid homage to all service members and first responders who follow Siller's legendary example.

ANSBACH, Germany - Representatives of Emergency Services Directorates and Fire Chiefs from garrisons across Installation Management Command, Europe (IMCOM-E) met at the IMCOM-E Fire and Emergency Services Region Training Center in Ansbach on Urlas Kaserne to tour the facilities and observe certification training of U.S. and German firefighters Oct. 17, 2018. The USAG Ansbach facility is the singular fire training facility for IMCOM in Europe.

While on site the visitors learned about the different training opportunities, observed and took part in and refreshed their fire-fighting and rescue skills in a variety of training scenarios including fire ground operations, breaching and rescue operations, equipment maintenance, hazardous materials response and emergency communications procedures.

Fire Protection Specialist Sigurd Mack from IMCOM-E Headquarters in Sembach, Germany explained that Ansbach site was invaluable in qualifying and certifying the proficiency of a firefighter's skill.

"The course objectives and structure offered here is based on requirements issued by the National Fire Protection Agency, which the Department of Defense has adopted " Mack said. He explained that the course includes academic study as well as weeks of practical exercises, including fighting various types of fires, and required safety measures.

"We adjust training and certification procedures to meet Host Nation safety standards, but within the NFPA framework, and with DoD recognized certification" explained Mack.

The Vigilant Air Command Warbird Museum is a cool air museum that doubles as an aircraft preservation and/or restoration facility. I had never heard of it until the day I visited - it sounded pretty good, and it was. I hit it shortly before closing on a Sunday evening and had the place to myself. My first impression was how crowded it was. Planes were tightly packed together in the hanger. It was hard to get any photos without getting a bunch of other stuff in the photo. There are also a number of planes outside in the elements. I liked that you can get up close and personal with the planes, but be careful since I almost poked my eyes out several times.

The museum is located at the Space Coast Regional Airport, near Titusville, Florida. Check it out if you are in the area. I took these photos in mid-December 2021.

Oh, the difference a period makes.

Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico- Soldiers, civilians, family members and friends gathered at the 1st Mission Support Command, US Army Reserve-Puerto Rico headquarters, to witness the promotion ceremony of Lt. Col. Julia Diaz-Rex, the 1st MSC’s Staff Judge Advocate, to the rank of Colonel, Jan. 11.

Brig. Gen. Jose R. Burgos, 1st MSC commanding general, presided over the ceremony.

“What Julia (Diaz-Rex) accomplished today is the result of many years of dedication, hard work, blood and tears. Not everybody can reach the rank of colonel in the US Army,” said Burgos, while recognizing the professional advice provided by Diaz-Rex as a member of the 1st MSC staff.

Shortly after her parents pinned the new rank on Diaz-Rex’s shoulders, the officer addressed the audience.

“This has been a blessing for me. When I first came in the service, in 1995, I did not think that I would ever get to the rank of colonel. I want to thank my family because they understood that I wanted to serve our country, which is one of the most important things to do. I am privileged that I have been given this opportunity. Mom and dad, thanks for your undivided support,” said Diaz-Rex.

The new colonel also recognized the help of the noncommissioned officers throughout her career.

“In every rank that I ever had, I realized that the one thing a senior leader always needs is the noncommissioned officer corps (NCO’s). Without the NCO’s I would not be here today,” added Diaz-Rex, who is also an assistant attorney at the US Attorney’s office in San Juan.
