The Distinguished Gentelman next to me is my friend Steve Orel. Soon to be the late Steve Orel. We grew up together and he is dying of colon cancer. And the world will be a poorer place for that. He is the founder of a place called World of Opportunity that is helping people in his community to get their GED's and obtain skills to get jobs and retain their dignity. He did this in response to the Birmingham Schools kicking out kids to raise their test scores. Pushing marginal youth onto the garbage heap to make the schools look better. Well while the adminstrators and school boards carried out their shameful deeds Steve fought back and was fired for his troubles. But what he ended up doing was transforming an adult education program into one of the more succesful alternative schools in the country. He was an anti Klan organizer, union organizer and all round amazing person. And he was my friend. I speak of him in past tense as he is already in the grip of sister morphine and is rapidly approaching his death which he has decided to do as the pain and agony of surgery grew too burdensome to him. I will miss this guy. We were the three stooges minus one.
7:23 a.m. He is gone...
W. H. Auden
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.
Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.
He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.
The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.
I was diagnosed and underwent emergency surgery for Stage 2 Colon Cancer. It's an ugly disease but I'm going to fight it with all my might and come out better than I was before, GOD willing. I am very blessed that it was caught when it was because the surgeon told me I would have bled to death by the following day if I hadn't gone to the emergency room.
A new tribute painting of the Patron Saint of Cancer Sufferers, Saint Peregrine by expressionist artist Stephen B. Whatley.
Saint Peregrine is also the Patron Saint of AIDS and other illnesses as well as Cancer - so may all those who meditate upon the image, created and infused with prayers, receive light, hope, protection and ultimate healing relief. Peace.
The artist - a Catholic convert since 2011 - often gets, through prayer, what he feels a 'Divine Push' to paint such Christian tributes and felt directed to paint Saint Peregrine, with prayers for healing, light and hope for those suffering cancer in his life - and worldwide.
He had a deep feeling the day of painting - 21 February - was a significant date; and later, after painting, realised it was the day in 1935 that Jesus had appeared to the Polish nun, Sister ( since 2000, Saint) Faustina, requesting she seek an artist and have a painting made depicting His Divine Mercy.
Stephen B. Whatley has painted several Divine Mercy images over the years; some of which were exhibited in his 2013 exhibition 'Paintings From Prayer' at London's Westminster Cathedral. There is a permanent walkway of his series of 30 paintings for the Tower of London, outside Tower Hill Station, London.
Peregrine Laziosi (Italy, c.1260-1345) experienced a miracle of healing in his own life, at 60, when a cancerous growth in his leg threatened amputation. The night before the amputation he spent praying before a fresco of The Crucifixion and later in a sleep state felt Jesus descend from The Cross to touch his leg. The next day the doctors found no trace of the cancer and he was pronounced cured; word spreading quickly of the power of Trust in the Lord.
The National Shrine of Saint Peregrine is at Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica in Chicago, Illinois, USA
This new painting took, alongside prayers, inspiration from a classic prayer card, acquired in New York in 2015.

The emphasis is to give my sister quality time as much as possible in her last stage of life...
Location: Gaasperpark, Amsterdam Zuidoost (NL)

Reason: My sister Jacqueline is mentally and physically limited and lives in a care institution of Cordaan in Amsterdam. In February this year, Jacqueline started to struggle with her health. The prognosis of a stomach ulcer later turned out to be worse than imaginable. At the end of June it was found that it was colon cancer with metastases to the liver. No longer treatable. The only thing that can be offered is comfort and pain relief. This is the phase she is in right now. We will let her enjoy life as long as we can. A tour round of Gaasperplas on the wheelchair bike is certainly part of that. No idea how long this can go on. But on this day Jacqueline enjoyed herself. And so I did!
Gaasperpark: The Gaasperpark is a park in Gaasperdam, district Amsterdam-Zuidoost, on the northern bank of the Gaasperplas, an artificial recreational lake, created by sand extraction for the raising of the construction of Gaasperdam. The Gaasperpark is part of Groengebied Amstelland.
The construction of the park started in 1977 for the Floriade of 1982. After the Floriade almost all additions were removed, leaving a simpler city park. A work of art consisting of six steel boxes at the former entrance is still there. A congress center was established in the planetarium building. At the Gaasperplas there is a water playground, a marina and several sunbathing areas. The Amsterdam city camping site Gaasper Camping is surrounded by the park.
The Gaasperplas metro station is located on the northeast side of the Gaasperpark. [ Wikipedia ]

Kitschy decor in a greasy spoon dinner located deep in the cattle ranch area of the panhandle of North Texas. The agriculture of death that is the cattle business has an extremely negative impact on climate change.
The slaughter of cows is nothing short of cruelty to animals, and in return (in a form of poetic justice) the consumers of beef have a high rate of cardiovascular diseases and also colon cancer.
Human colon cancer cells with the cell nuclei stained red and the protein E-cadherin stained green. E-cadherin is a cell adhesion molecule and its loss signals a process known as the epithelial-mesenchymal transition in which cells acquire the ability to migrate and become invasive.
Thanks to improvements in screening technologies and public health outreach, more cancers are being detected early. While that’s life-saving news for many people, it does raise some important questions about the management of small, early-stage tumors. Do some tumors take a long time to smolder in their original location before they spread, or metastasize, while others track to new, distant, and dangerous sites early in their course? Read more:

Scientists at PNNL are developing a model of the microbial environment inside the human gut. This model is composed of three-dimensional human intestinal cells cultured with specific gut bacteria. Changes in certain bacterial populations within the gut have been attributed to colon cancer, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s diseases. The three-dimensional model provides an approach to study how changes in bacteria affect gut health and overall human health. Research was funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and PNNL’s Laboratory Directed Research and Development initiative in chemical imaging.

A colon polyp is a small clump of cells that forms on the lining of the colon. Most colon polyps are harmless. But over time, some colon polyps can develop into colon cancer.
Polyps in the colon may present anywhere. It may be ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, or sigmoid colon, rectum or anal canal.
It is necessary to remove all these polyps. At SMILES, Video Colonoscopy is performed to find the polyp, to remove the polyp & send it for histopathological examination to find out if it is a benign one or a cancerous one.

Overview: Railroad Worker Cancer Risks
Railroad workers may have been exposed to the highly toxic chemical Benzene, which can be inhaled and absorbed through the skin. Early on, it was believed that Benzene could only cause lung cancer, but Benzene exposure has been linked to the following types of cancer:
Bladder Cancer
Colon Cancer
Esophageal Cancer
Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
Kidney Cancer
Lung Cancer
Mesothelioma
Multiple Myeloma
Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
Laryngeal Cancer
Rectal Cancer
Stomach Cancer
Throat Cancer
Leukemia
Other Cancer
Other Railroad Worker Cancer Risks
There are other carcinogens that railroad workers may have been exposed to that may also explain cancers developed by those who work on locomotives, including creosote and other chemical solvents.
There is evidence that creosote may cause skin cancer and cancer of the scrotum. Chemical solvents may cause chronic toxic encephalopathy and other brain diseases.
Railroad companies who were responsible for providing a safe work environment may be in violation of the Federal Employers Liability Act (FELA).
A railroad worker who was diagnosed with cancer may think the cancer was because of his or her family history or another explanation, when it may be because of hazardous chemicals you were exposed to on the job. FELA allows employees who worked in such unsafe environments to seek financial compensation, and such lawsuits do not require out-of-pocket costs on the part of the railroad worker.
If you or your loved one were diagnosed with cancer or another serious illness and worked on the railroad for more than five years, you may be qualify to file railroad worker cancer lawsuit. A year ago today I was in the hospital for my week and a half long recovery after major surgery to remove a tumor that had grown into stage 3 colon cancer. The kind of surgery that can't be done with lasers. The kind that takes a good six months to recover from. The old me was gone, and it was the start of learning to live with a permanent colostomy bag. Read more here: ishcancer.wordpress.com/2013/02/04/a-year-ago-today/

Originally taken by my dad back in July. The nose tube ended up creating quite a scar.
At this point (late July 2007) I weighed about the least I ever have in my adult life: less than 150 pounds (68 kg), after nearly three weeks in hospital. That's some 50 pounds (23 kg) lighter than my previous normal weight of 200 pounds (91 kg). It took more than two months to gain back about 30 pounds (14 kg), stabilizing in the 175-180 pound (79-82 kg) range by the fall of 2007, when I started more chemo. By early 2008, I was back to a much more normal weight, but my hair was getting scraggly and grey.
A few slices from my latest CT scan, taken at the end of September 2009.
I've circled the biggest lung tumours metastasized from my original colon cancer (which was removed by surgery in mid-2007). You can see the one in my upper left one and two (one right behind the other) in my lower left lung.
There are six more tumours, all smaller, not easily visible in this view. I'm not a radiologist, so I couldn't readily distinguish them from regular lung matter and other tissue. So now we can all see what I'm dealing with.
These tumours have all grown slightly since I started treatment with cediranib in November 2008. To my untrained eye, the view doesn't look that different from the last time I saw my scan in December of that year, which is fairly good as far as I'm concerned.

I lie face down on the table, which then rises up. Radiation technologists adjust my position with the laser and rulers on the wall and floor, based on the three tattoos on my lower back. Then they leave the room and close the big thick door behind them.
The linear accelerator pivots to one side, blasts me twice with radiation, pivots to the other side, blasts me twice again, then returns to the topmost position and blasts me again.
I hear a buzzing noise each time, but don't feel anything. I don't get to look at the pictures on the ceiling -- just the surface of the table in front of my face. The whole process takes about five minutes. It happens every weekday, and will from mid-April to late May 2007.
