Concours d'Elégance Chantilly 2019

Another 25 beautiful new puzzles came out last October from Russian indie brand Stella. Only distributed in Russia (as far as I can see), the puzzles are manufactured by Trefl in small runs and feature Russian artworks that are part of the permanent collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. I gave a full review of the brand a few years ago here.

This newest batch of puzzles is their best yet, in my opinion. Whereas the second series focused too heavily on still-lifes, here we see a lot of beautiful outdoor scenes, both natural and architectural, showing the mystical grandeur of the Russian countryside. Also featured is another beautiful portrait by Mikhail Vrubel, a haunting scene of Daryal Gorge by A.I. Kuindzhi, and a spectacular view of the Castle of Angelo in Rome by Russian artist S.F. Shchedrin. Every Stella I've seen so far has had exceptionally high-quality print resolution.

The puzzles are very affordable at around $9 for a 1000 piece, $15 for a 2000 piece and less than $20 for their largest size, 3000 pieces. I have ordered mine through 1001puzzle.com, which speaks English and accepts PayPal. If you don't mind waiting a couple of months to receive your order, their economy (i.e., surface) shipping will send up to 17kg. of merchandise for about $85 to the U.S., which amounts to around 15 or so puzzles depending on the size. My package arrived earlier than expected, in around 6 weeks. Despite very robust packaging by 1001, a few of my puzzles arrived with a dent in the corner of the box (see top left box above), probably due to rough handling en route. Still, I'm really happy to have copies of these.

Clockwise, from top left: "Novodevichy Monastery: The Cathedral" by A.M. Vasnetsov, 1500 pieces; "Winter Dream," by A.M. Vasnetsov, 1000 pieces; "Spring in the Forest" by S.Yu. Zhukovsky, 3000 pieces; and "Riding on the Neva" by A.P. Bogolyubov, 2000 pieces.

San Diego Fashion Week 2014 - SS 15 Collection - Norma Hill Designs Collection

Fine artist, photographer, fashion designer Norma Brown Hill, a native New Yorker, began her photographic journey almost 30 years ago. Her first job after graduating from Bard College was at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Photograph Library. Her interest in photography landed her a job photographing art and architecture in Europe and the Middle East. In the late 70‘s she settled in Paris where she studied darkroom techniques and learned the art of hand painting black and white photographs using oil paint. After returning to New York, she studied Polaroid Transfer techniques at the International Center of Photography in New York City. Subsequently, she was one of six artists in the country chosen to be a creative consultant to Polaroid. Hill’s signature is her manipulated photos that are often found on her garments, as well as on her fine art exhibited at Christies in NY, the French Institute, the National Arts Club in NYC, Gallery Solferino in Milan, the Heckscher Museum in Long Island, the Nassau County Museum of Fine Arts, the Edwin A. Ulrich Museum, the New York Public Library, Studio 54, as well as many other venues. Many major corporations including Miramax Productions, Smith Barney, and Oheka Castle have purchased Hill’s work. She has been featured in numerous publications, including the New York Times, Newsday, Better Homes and Gardens, and Modern Photography. Hill recently moved to San Diego where she has a studio in Leucadia. Currently her collection for FWSD is dedicated to creating artistic images combining painting and photography, incorporating sacred icons and texts from various cultures to help promote harmony in diversity through clothing. She truly has a unique way of printing her images on textiles that you don’t want to miss coming down the runway.

PUBLIC COMMONS.SOURCE INSTITUTION: San Diego Air and Space Museum Archive

Digitised image from the Town Hall Photographer's Collection - GB127.M850

The Town Hall Photographer’s Collection is a large photographic collection held in Manchester City Council’s Central Library archives, ranging in date from 1956 to 2007.

The collection consists of tens of thousands of images, covering the varied areas of work of Manchester Corporation and latterly, Manchester City Council.

The photographs were taken by staff photographers, who were tasked to document the work of Corporation/Council departments and, in doing so, captured many aspects of Manchester life and history, including significant changes to the Manchester landscape.

The collection includes many different formats from glass negatives, to slides, prints, CDs and even a couple of cine films.

What is especially exciting is that the majority of these images have never before been available in a digital format and therefore have only ever been seen by a handful of people.

A team of dedicated Staff and Volunteers are currently working on the systematic digitisation of the negatives held within the collection.

This album represents the result of their work to date.

Card Text (transcribed from postcard): This institution was established in 1838 and is situated on an eminence overlooking the valley of Shockoe Creek. The main building is a rare example of the ancient Egyptian order of architecture, and has attracted much attention. Recognizing the great need of surgeons for armies in the field, its course were continued without interruption during the whole of the Civil War. In January, 1913, the Univ. College of Medicine was merged with this institution, and by this consolidation, Richmond become possessed the largest and best equipped medical college in the South.

I'm fairly sure she is wearing a large photo brooch, but sadly the image is too faded there to be sure.

Susannah is really lovely. She has Petra Star and von Plasty on her back. She is surprisingly heavy!
