Another great session with Ayla. I experimented a lot with different post processing, this was one I thought came out expecially well.
A most fortunate trip early this morning. I had no plans going to bed Friday night but have been waking up in the middle of the night rather often lately ever since going to Eastern Daylight Time. So when it happened today at 4:30 AM I decided to put it to use. One problem with these darkness trips and hikes is nowhere open to get breakfast fast and I'd need something substantial for sure. The great thing about right after the time change is the sun comes up really late, so I cooked a big meal.
Turbo and I drove up to the Mount Pleasant National Scenic Area near Buena Vista, VA and took the Appalachian Trail south up to Cold Mountain. It's a "bald" area similar to what is found around Roan Mountain in NC/TN. Pretty much a 360 view and there aren't many places in VA with a better shot of the rising sun. I wasn't sure how it would be since there was a lot of overcast where I live and on the drive up. It's about a 1 mile hike to get up here and did it just as the glow of day started. Only had to wait about 15 minutes until the sun came up, and the sky just kept getting better. I stayed around taking pictures for perhaps 45 more minutes and could have stayed much longer.
We rode home on the parkway stopping at the good overlooks and also went for a flower walk at the James River. It's the low point of the parkway and thus spring happens in that area first. We ended up seeing Dutchmans Breetches, Cutleaf Toothwort, Spring Beauties, Bloodroot, and Star Chickweed. Best photo trip I've had in awhile and don't know how long it's been for that nice of a Saturday.
one of the many mini-waterfalls along the trail going to tapiya falls where children enjoy a cool bath despite the cold weather
It’s cold this winter. In fact, it’s probably the coldest winter we have ever experienced in Utah. Everyday looks so bleak. Depressing…
Lemongrass is naturally sweet so it requires less sugar than other herbal infusions. The flavor is very nice so you may want to double the recipe! Recipe available at BasicallyVegan.com
Yes, that is what it's called.

Waning Gibbous
Spotted on the horizon with a most beautiful orange tint while traveling home. The color had dissipated by the time I got to photographing it.

When the sun is shinning but the wind is still blowing and the temperature is not right for a swimsuit an alternative is necessary. Shorts are always an option, jeans never.

our heating system was down last night and this morning and i was freeeeezing working on my laptop. i asked gary for some warm winter socks. this is what he gave me. i got a good laugh out of it. i feel like i am stuck in the 80s. and it made me think: what an odd job to design patterns for socks. no?
It was Halloween. I got out of the house so I wouldn't have to put up with the dog's barking whenever the doorbell rang. I froze my hands numb, but it was worth it :)
Oh, and the looks you get from old men on weird roller skates while you hold a toy camera are hilarious.

Springtime in the Great Northwest brings the Daffodil Parade to several locations in Pierce County (Washington State, USA). It also brings torrents of rain (.08 ins yesterday) and chilly temperatures (40 degrees Fahrenheit, 4.5 Celsius)
This clown (Afifi Shrine, I think, but I'm not sure) is in his second parade of the day and has two more to go. I think his lips are turning blue.
A great time was had by all--I love the Daffodil Festival!
Ever since I was a kid I'd heard that when it gets really cold outside water will actually freeze before it hits the ground. Tonight in Saskatoon SK the temperature hit -40 Celsius (same as -40F at this point) and a quick web search said this is around the temperature needed for this to happen.
The secret is you actually have to use boiling water because when you throw it up it turns first to steam the almost instanty to a flour like substance.
I don't know how well it came across in the video but it sounded really weird, sort of a sizzling/buzzing sound.
Hopefully next time it gets this cold it will be during daylight hours so it will be easier to film.
No tricks here, its just damn cold!!!

Didn't get too much done over the last few days as I've been working with the degree students on their proposals.
Started putting this trim around the "proscenium arch" of the box and relised that I've gone about it ALL wrong!
This should have been applied before the box was cut. Consquently, the edges are warping with the heat (silver/steel bi-metallic) and making it very difficult to keep true.
I'm having a hot cup of coffee, while looking at the cold world outside in the Luleå cultrual center in Luleå, Sweden in February.
Around Frankfurt, there's heaps of cold war relicts. helipads, rocket batteries or, like this, an old tank training ground. I'm not sure if, in retrospect, that all should have made me feel safe or worried...
Hot pepper ice cream from www.sunniskys.com/ in Angier, NC.
This was the result of a customer challenge to make a hot ice cream. There are at least two hot sauces, habanero, thai and cayenne chilis involved in this. I asked for a pint to go (for the folks at work) but they only pack kiddie size cups for take-away.
On my way home.
I boil water for food that i need energy from.
In a few hours it will be completely black. I do not have any kind of light with me or tent or sleeping bag. If I´m not back to the car before it gets dark , I will be in a cold situation that I do not want do be in.
I went like crazy down the mountain and saw that darkness was faster
than the DEVIL himself. A few hundred meters left, it went pitch black.
I stumbled forward and was certainly a good laugh if someone had seen me.
After a while i came to the road, and bet on a left turn.
After about 10-15 minutes i got do the car ;))) LUCK...
