This gull - perhaps a Glaucous Gull (Larus hyperboreus) - was perched atop a passing, melting iceberg in Ilulissat, Greenland. Ilulissat literally means "The Icebergs" in Greenlandic.
Polar bear encountered during a research trip to western Fram Strait. Fram Strait is the strait between the Arctic Ocean and the Greenland Sea at about 80 N. These bears are all standing on sea ice several hundred kilometers from the coast of Greenland. I took these photos from the deck of a research ship.

one of those days when I just can't get warm...or so I thought until a moment ago, but now the mulled wine is taking effect...much better!
Latest newly learned photoshop trick: when using a layer in overlay mode for dodging and burning, one can use colours as well as black and white. That's what I did here (with a warm orange colour) to give the black parts of her coat a warmer glow. You can see the difference because I forgot to "do" her nose.

Last Thursday in Manchester, five cars were stolen from outside the owner's house because the owner left the engine running to warm it up on a cold morning, leaving the car unlocked and unattended, with the key in the ignition. The next day another six were taken.
And I bet another batch went today. Funniest of all is that it's actually illegal to leave an unattended car with the engine running, so the stolen car won't be covered by
insurance!
