"As the horror of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor unfolded, PFC Bob Kinzler, U.S. Army, was watching the attack from his vantage point at Schofield Barracks. Radioman 3rd Class Everett Hyland was severely burned and wounded on the battleship USS Pennsylvania. " —The National WWII Museum, November 5, 2007

Bob Kinzler became a Captain in the Army 1940-1962, in the Schofield Barracks in Dec. 1941. This info was taken from the Wall of Valor at www.pearlharbormemorial.com, accessed Veterans Day, 11/11/10:

"Robert Kinzler was born in Newark, New Jersey on March 7, 1922. He enlisted in the United States Army on June 24, 1940, and arrived in Hawai`i in September of 1940.

"On December 7, 1941, Private Bob was a radio operator (Morse code) assigned to Headquarters Company, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry (Tropic Lightening) Division, at Schofield Barracks. (Schofield Barracks was not really the target for the Japanese planes, but rather Wheeler Air Field near by.) During the attack, his company was ordered to move to and set-up a battle station at Roosevelt High School football stadium in Honolulu. On their way to Honolulu, they got their first look at the destruction that took place at Pearl Harbor.

"During World War II, Bob served in the South Pacific, the continental United States, and Canada. After over 22 years of military service, he retired from the U. S. Army on October 2, 1962, at the rank of captain.

"Joining the National Park Service Volunteer In the Parks program in 1985, Robert Kinzler is one of the USS Arizona Memorial's longest serving volunteers. He has benefited the National Park Service, this park, and thousands of park visitors with his articulate and personal interpretation of December 7, 1941. He is also currently serving as president of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, Aloha Chapter 1, and the treasurer for the Arizona Memorial Museum Association."

Everett Hyland was Radioman, 3rd class Navy 1941 Pearl Harbor> the following info from the same source, www.pearlharbormemorial.com:

"Everett Hyland was born on March 17, 1923 in Stamford, Connecticut. He enlisted for naval service in November 1940, and went on active duty in January 1941. While awaiting trade school, he lived aboard the original USS Constellation in Newport, Rhode Island. He achieved "sea duty" on the historic ship. Later, he went through radioman's school in San Diego, California.

"On December 7, 1941, Everett served aboard the USS Pennsylvania (BB-38) as a Seaman of antenna repair. The "Pennsy" was in Dry Dock #1 on that morning. During the attack, he was carrying ammunition for the ship's 3 inch 50mm guns on the fantail. He was severely wounded when a Japanese bomb exploded near his battle station. Everett was so badly wounded that he was almost given up for dead. He did not recognize his surroundings until Christmas 1941.

"After months of recuperation from his wounds, Everett never went back to the USS Pennsylvania, but served aboard the USS Memphis and later at NAS Charleston, South Carolina. After his discharge from the Navy as a Radioman 3rd class in November 1945, he attended several universities in the states. He has been honored with seven distinguished medals including the Purple Heart.

"Everett Hyland eventually retired as a science teacher. The staff of the USS Arizona Memorial is pleased to have Everett as a National Park Service volunteer since 1995. He has been a crucial element in interpreting the Pearl Harbor attack story to thousands of park visitors."

USS Arizona Memorial Volunteers Honored

News Release Date: January 11, 2004

Sunday, January 11, 2004 U.S. Interior Secretary Gale Norton and Hawai’i Governor Linda Lingle honored ten USS Arizona Memorial volunteers at the park’s visitor center. The volunteers received the “Take Pride in America Secretarial Award” for dedicating over 3,000 lifetime service hours to the national shrine. The volunteers are part of the USS Arizona Memorial’s Volunteers-In-Parks Program (VIPs); collectively they have given over 60,000 service hours to the National Park Service. Park Superintendent Douglas Lentz put the volunteers’ accomplishment in perspective by reminding the crowd that the average employee works 40-hours a week or 2,080 hours a year. All the volunteers honored dedicated well over 3,000 hours. Lentz stated,"Our volunteers have a personal connection to the Memorial and their emotion and enthusiasm rubs off on the visitor." Honored were: Hilma Chang, Ray Emory, Richard Fiske, Gilbert Hatter, Everett Hyland, Stanley Igawa, Robert Kinzler, John Newton, Herb Weatherwax, and Warren Verhoff posthumously. The Interior Secretary praised the USS Arizona Memorial and Hawaii’s Governor Linda Lingle for providing the community with volunteer opportunities. “Volunteerism in our historic parks provides a commitment to preserving America’s culture and history for future generations,” stated Norton during the reception. Seven of the volunteers honored Sunday were Pearl Harbor Survivors. Their stories, photos, letters and memorabilia give perspective to December 7, 1941. For our youngest generation of Americans who do not “Remember Pearl Harbor,” they now have a face and a personality to coincide with the history books. These volunteers in particular are living history. Park ranger Terry Dorman manages the park’s volunteer program. The secret to his success is the wise utilization of volunteer’s talents and time. In six years, the park’s annual volunteer hours have increased from 8,000 to 22,600 hours a year. The volunteer program is as popular and strong as ever with 45 full-time volunteers. Resurgence in patriotism and a reinvigorated tourism economy continues to make the USS Arizona Memorial one of Hawaii’s most visited sites. The Memorial averages 4,200 visitors daily and volunteers are essential to the visitor center operation. On any given day volunteers can be found throughout the park presenting interpretive programs, conducting informal talks and providing visitor services. The Take Pride in America Program was launched to recognize and support volunteers who dedicate themselves to the betterment of national parks and cultural and historic sites. The volunteers at the USS Arizona Memorial have made a tremendous contribution to helping American’s experience their heritage. The Fall 2010 Student Hackathon brought in hundreds of students from 30 universities to NYU's Courant Institute for 24 hours of creative hacking on New York City startups' APIs.

Selected startups presented their technologies at the beginning of the event, and students formed groups to brainstorm and begin coding on their ideas. Many students worked into the night, foregoing sleep to fulfill their visions.

On Sunday afternoon students presented their projects to an audience including a judging panel, which selected the final winners.

hackNY hosts hackathons one each semester, as well as a Summer Fellows Program, which pairs quantitative and computational students with startups which can demonstrate a strong mentoring environment, a problem for a student to work on, a person to mentor them, and a place for them to work. Startups selected to host a student are expected to compensate student Fellows. Students enjoy free housing together and a pedagogical lecture series to introduce them to the ins and outs of joining and founding a startup.

The idea popped up in my head when I was thinking about how Zero made his dramatic entrance when he went to prove Suzaku's innocence in episode ten.

So I thought of having Zero do something like this:http://objection.mrdictionary.net/go.php?n=3057937

Statue at Wesly Bolin Memorial Park to honor and remember Navajo Code Talkers from WWII.

"Known as Navajo Code Talkers, they were young Navajo men who transmitted secret communications on the battlefields of WWII. At a time when America's best cryptographers were falling short, these modest sheepherders and farmers were able to fashion the most ingenious and successful code in military history. They drew upon their proud warrior tradition to brave the dense jungles of Guadalcanal and the exposed beachheads of Iwo Jima. Serving with distinction in every major engagement of the Pacific theater from 1942-1945, their unbreakable code played a pivotal role in saving countless lives and hastening the war's end."
