Traditional (?) Newfoundland fare. Both dishes were pretty good! Although I was a little surprised; I would have expected cod to have smaller tongues, and moose to have bigger sausages.

This gull was perched on the eastern entrance rock jetty to the Cape Cod Canal and did not seem to fear human proximity.
If Brussels has a downside (graffiti, dog shit and the awful wine sold in most bars aside) it is the sameness of so many of its restaurants. There are only so many times you need to eat shrimp croquettes, tomatoes stuffed with shrimps (yes them again), rabbit à la kriek, overcooked mussels or Waterzooi with chicken (a creamy stew that is delicious—on the rare occasion that it is made with fish, not rubbery, battery-farmed poulet)
But on the upside there is stoemp—Belgian bubble ‘n’ squeak. Boil and mash some floury spuds. Cook some veg, mix together, et voilà.
In this case we fried some onions in some (lots of) butter, added some chopped carrots, put the lid on the pan, turned the heat right down and let them sauté, stirring occasionally until the carrots were almost done. Then we added some halved sprouts (since they were first cultivated a couple of hundred metres from here) and replaced the lid until the Brussels were done. Then we stirred the sautéed vegetables into the potato, seasoned and added chopped parsley before shaping into “cakes” (OK, we used those poncy chef’s rings) and frying.

The thing I love about this photo is the absolutely menacing Potato Cod in the top left of the frame.

This was my entry in the 2006 Peeps Diorama Contest, held every year by the St. Paul Pioneer Press. I did not win. Clearly, I was robbed. This was submitted before the movie came out, and I can only surmise that the judges had not read the book. Call it sour grapes--or sour Peeps--if you wish. :-)
Cape Cod’s oldest lighthouse, locally known as the Highland Light, is officially named "Cape Cod Light" on the NOAA nautical chart for the region. It sits perched 120 feet above the ocean in the Highlands of Truro. Its beam shines 174 ft. above sea level to give mariners warning of the treacherous sandbars off this shore.

This is a face I make when a camper hiding behind a wall I walk around knifes me in the back...damn campers
I'd also like to add that this sweater vest was hand knitted by my girlfriends grandmother!

when people learn that odin loves to start his day with a serving of cod liver oil mixed with juice, we usually get quizzical looks - people still give their kids that icky stuff that grandmothers used to force down the gullets of their kids?
maybe grandma was on to something. cod liver oil is a fantastic source of omega fatty acids which research has shown to be important for brain development.
and even more interestingly for us, babies born before 33 weeks gestation have insufficient levels of DHA and fish oil for preemies may boost cognition.
carlson makes odin's con liver oil of choice and is tested to be free of detectable levels of mercury, cadmium, lead and PCB's
if you ask him, he really will tell you that it tastes pretty darned good.
and, of course, it's perfectly perfect that odin's favorite cod liver oil would be norwegian :-)
