"Thought I'd just pose for the camera right about...here. I'm not dirty- really!....I'm a bush Cockroach and they are CLEAN"
Acacia pycnantha don't produce true leaves but have flattened leaf stalks called phyllodes that look much like leaves and serve the same function. Nectary glands at the base of the phyllode and sometimes on it produce a sugary substance very attractive to ants, the presence of which protect the acacia from attack by other insects. What is attractive to ants is, however, also attractive to others. While photographing ants at the nectary glands, a small native cockroach nymph muscled in on the action and enjoyed a few opportunities to sip at the nectar. The ants weren't sharing though and proceeded to see off the cockroach, including by nipping at the very prominent circi at the rear of the cochroach. Not a bad approach given that the circi are directly connected to the legs, so a nip gets the legs moving even before the cockroach has had a chance to think about it.
In this photo the cockroach has found an unattended nectary gland and helps itself.
They have taken over an abandoned Bag moth's bag, but seem to be enjoying some fresh air. A bit dangerous as there are a lot of Black cockroach hunters around at the moment

We were cruising through the Sanpete County Fair looking at cute little lambs and groomed cows when we happened upon this huge nasty looking cockroach. Guess who immediately came to mind, yep my Flickr peep Shona Leah :) She has more bugs crawling through her photostream than anyone I know and she has PROMISED me that she is going to take a photo with a big ugly hairy spider on her hand so keep checking her stream :) This one's for you Shona Leah!
Cockroaches are insects of the order Blattodea, sometimes called Blattaria, of which about 30 species out of 4,600total are associated with human habitats. About four species are well known as pests.Among the best-known pest species are the American cockroach, Periplaneta americana, which is about 30 mm (1.2 in) long; the German cockroach, Blattella germanica, about 15 mm (0.59 in) long; the Asian cockroach, Blattella asahinai, also about 15 mm (0.59 in) in length; and the Oriental cockroach, Blatta orientalis, about 25 mm (0.98 in). Tropical cockroaches are often much bigger, and, contrary to popular opinion, extinct cockroach relatives and 'roachoids' such as the Carboniferous Archimylacris and the Permian Apthoroblattina were not as large as the biggest modern species.
