TAXONOMY
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda (insects, arachnids, and crustaceans)
Class: Insecta
Order: Blattodea (cockroaches and the termites)
Family: Blaberidae (giant cockroaches)
GENUS/SPECIES: Blaberus giganteus
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS: They have three pairs of legs, and two pairs of wings, the forewings being light brown in colour. Largest neotropical cockroach by weight. A giant cockroach has a flattened, oval body, about 9 cm (3.5 inches) long and 4 cm (1.5 inches) wide. Females are slightly larger than males. They commonly run along the ground, although the adults have wings that are rarely if ever used for flight. They have long, very slender antennae and two sensory organs, called cerci, at the tip of the abdomen.
DISTRIBUTION/HABITAT: Central and South America. They prefer dark, damp locations such as caves, rock crevices, tree hollows, and spaces under loose tree bark.
DIET IN THE WILD: Cockroaches are omnivores and detritivores. Common diet includes bat guano, rotting wood, fruit, seeds, decomposing vegetation, dead insects, and other animals. They help recycle decaying matter on the ground into useful nutrients for plants.
MORTALITY/LONGEVITY: They can live about 20 months as adults.
REPRODUCTION: Females emit a pheromone that induces males to mate. Male courtship rituals include raising wings at right angles to abdomen and making trembling movements with abdomen. After mating, the female B. giganteus will be pregnant for life producing eggs which turn into nymphs which later become adults.
CONSERVATION: IUCN: Not Listed; CITES: Not Listed
Cockroaches dates back over 200-300 million years, and are very adaptable and resilient animals.
REMARKS: The leg bristles and antennae are used for seeing and feeling, in their dark habitat, while their flat bodies enable them to hide in crevices and underneath rocks. Cockroaches do not have lungs to breathe, but instead they take air in through spiracles, which are tiny holes on the sides of their bodies, and are used to send oxygen to other parts of the body. This allows the cockroach to survive for a period of time without its head, until it dies of infection, starvation or dehydration. When threatened, the giant cockroach is able to produce a foul smell to ward off predators.

Non-toxic paint+Madagascar hissing cockroaches=Jackson Pollock-esq art!
We frequently paint with many of our animals at the zoo. This provides enrichment for the animals, as well as decorative art suitable for framing. Watch for these unique works of art for auction at ZOOCson on October 12!
I drew a string of happy cockroaches to accompany a short story Serena wrote about them...
...and promptly made a tiled wallpaper out of said string.
It makes me happy. :)

Back by popular demand. A few thousand rubber cockroaches are on the walls, ceiling, floor, sink, etc. of this downstairs half-bath. There are also broken bits of bloody glass and drips of blood on the sink. The skull with exposed brain is covered in maggots.
I don't always photograph cockroaches, but when I do, I pick only the cool ones. Subfamily: Panesthiinae ? Genus? ID help appreciated. Selangor, Malaysia.

BTW... I was only using IE because FF3 crashed on my last attempt to write a blog post and I was annoyed.
The Madagascar hissing cockroach (Gromphadorhina portentosa), also known as Hissing roach or simply Hisser, is one of the largest species of cockroach, reaching 2-3 inches at maturity. They are from the island of Madagascar off the African coast, where they can be found in rotting logs.
Unlike most cockroaches, they are wingless (though this is also true of some other wood-dwelling roaches). They are excellent climbers and can easily scale smooth glass. Males can be distinguished from females by their thicker, hairier antennae and the pronounced "horns" on the pronotum. Females carry the ootheca (egg case) internally, and release the young nymphs only after the eggs have hatched. As in some other wood roaches, the parents and offspring will commonly remain in close physical contact for extended periods of time. In captivity, these insects can live 5 years. They feed primarily on various types of vegetable material.

Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. Saw them at California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco.
A mixture of revulsion and fascination.
Pest monitoring can provide insights about what pest is present (German cockroach), what life stages (adults and nymphs), if the population has been treated (crinkled wings from insect growth regulator use), directionality of movement (all on one side of glue board) and proximity to nest site (based on presence of first instars)

This is a photograph of a very bad Germand Cockroach infestation in Sunderland. There were thousands of roached.

Canyon des Forestieres (near Camp des Americains) ... in the bat caves.
The cockroaches run around all over, presumably feeding on the bat droppings.

Our birthday getaway to Victoria BC.
Exploring the Victoria Bug Zoo.
Nothing like a big ol' pile of roaches. Am I right? The ones that look like prehistoric sea creatures are the juveniles.
