this cock was found in a hasidic neighborhood in brooklyn. there are no animals like this in brooklyn. it chased me down the street every time i took it's picture. it didn't like me, and i don't think his owners did either since they laughed at me every time i tried to ask them a question about their weird street rooster.

Near a large and ancient poultry market so not nearly as sensational as the name suggests.

An alternative, and less prosaic offering suggests it was so-called because in the middle ages it was the venue for cock fights.

A further suggestion relates to a guilded statue can be seen high on a wall (I haven't seen it, perhaps it is no longer there?) which represented a pub (long gone) called the 'Fortune oif War'. The statue was of a naked boy.
