Last night's glorious sunset seen from Bakestall looking towards Dash Farm. The last dregs of sunlight illuminated the valley in a blaze of red before disappearing over the horizon. This area holds special and fond memories for me as it is where I initially started exploring the fells around age 10 with my dad. It truly feels like home here.
Great Cockup is a fell on the Wainwright list in the Northern group of fells. Very appropriately named as I misread the map and ended up having to struggle up this gully to regain the path, and this was at the end of a very long day of bagging five other Wainwrights :-)
Happy Fence Friday
I had a nightmare of a job trying to covert this video from a pds file to a Mp4 , I have spent hours trying go through thousands clicks and cockups and restarting until I got the gist
of how to start editing , so this is my first attempt along with a 2 track of music that I hope you will like . also my first attempt at composing 2 pieces of music on a 2 track
Gentle gradients for elderly limbs.
Lots of v shaped valleys and no u shaped ones.... odd.! With so many indicators and features of glaciation just around the corner.

Don't ask me why, but Longlands Fell is probably my favourite 'Wainwright'. It's very featureless, unassuming and low in elevation - but all in all I think it's a lovely fell with great character and a grand sense of quietness. For a small hill, the views are very far reaching too, with glimpses of Lakeland yet a grand panorama of Scotland and the Solway right round to Carlisle and the Pennines. I struggled to find a rock or any foreground feature to compliment the view, but then I thought the patterns of snow amongst the grasses fitted in nicely with Longland's grassy charm and didn't distract from the vista.

I took this image in the Lake District, UK. The howling wind and torrential downpour on the summit of Great Cockup weren’t exactly the most comfortable conditions to shoot in, but they provided the perfect atmosphere for this fascinating rainbow over the rolling hills. My camera got soaked, and the tripod nearly blew over more than once, but I think the reward was worth it. The scene was very difficult to compose due to my long shadow casting across the foreground from the late afternoon sun, but I eventually found the perfect spot before the rainbow disappeared.
This is one of those things that turn up every now and then when looking through your days work.
A result of not paying any attention to the camera, the conditions or the subject...entirely accidental....quite spooky...I think I quite like it, none-the-less.
Off to work now - hope trains are on time.... :-(
Dec 2009.
Chefchaouen is a city located in the Rif Mountains in northwest Morocco. It is renowned for the remarkable buildings of varying shades of faded blue in its old town.
James Joyce House associated with the short story from Dubliners The Dead, this historical building is shortly to be converted to a youth hostel. Another Dublin City Council snub to our architectural and literary heritage. Holga HP5 Developed in Rodinal
No, I'm not describing the rather amusing name of this Lakeland hill, but Marks decision to traverse all the way around the head of the valley rather than take the direct route as I did. He has significantly longer legs than I and of course covers the ground much quicker, however his choice of route meant I was able to sit down and brew a cuppa whilst I waited for him to eventually turn up.
It was the first time that I had climbed Great Cockup, a hill that first came to my attention through the Denis Norden programme, "It'll be alright on the night".
As can be seen from the light we had been out a while and we weren't far from descending in the dark.
Surprising October sun on descending Little Cockup - yes really that's the name of the fell! (Along with Great Cockup it makes a circular walk)Lake District, Cumbria
Possibly the greyest day ever. Windy too. A short walk to visit Great Cockup, Meal Fell, Great Sca Fell and Knott. Some nice views of Whitewater Dash before heading up into the clouds.
...the view from Cockup Bridge... The water level can be seen here to be much higher than the surrounding fen...
Spread out lads... wouldn't want to catch a bug.
In 1854 the British Military engaged in another one of its 'hilarious cockups' where inept commanders sent married men and eligible bachelors into a massacre.
If they survived the charge but were injured then they may have been sent into the care of Florence Nightingale. At that point their lives may have been in even greater danger than on the battlefield when in a care setting. Due to unsanitary conditions and inept caring standards. Reminds me of a recent parallel. I wonder if the modern day Nightingale hospitals were named such for that reason.
Florence's best skills were in statistics, credited with inventing the pie chart. And thereby began the state's love affair with misrepresenting data. That was not her fault though I dare say.
Are they all 2 metres apart would you say?
Hello there. Relevant comments welcome but please do NOT post any link(s).
And this is what happens when you don't pay attention to what you're wearing and your camera settings! Top that off with a case of "that'll do!", then when you get home you realised you was wearing jeans and trainers and you forgot to adjust the camera after the previous shot. Still is was fun to make.
Soldering Iron came out tonight to finally build a better one! This one came about originally because I accidently turned my head torch on. I quickly turned the cockup into a picture that didn't look quite so accidental.

A classic example of how not compose an image. Maybe I should enter it into a club competition and listen to everything that is wrong. Pls feel free to have a go!
A funny shade of blue.... Optare Versa YJ12 MZV is one of a small number which have been expected for a while would cascade from Harrogate to York once displaced by electric Volvo's in the spa town. This did initially run for a week or two in Harrogate Connect livery but then the fleetnames were removed as can be seen here www.flickr.com/photos/york-bus/29984672557/
During late september 2018 this was sent off for one or two jobs to be done on it including a full sand down and repaint into the new York and Country blue livery which was first shown online in February.... instead, in something which can only be described as a collossal cockup, the bus was fully repainted BACK into the red and black Harrogate Connect livery but with Y&C fleetnames added. Maybe the painter thought that was actually the York livery seeing as a number of red and black buses have been running with it in York.

That's enough of that!
I thought I'd have a go at combining the wet nut and the splash photos.
The first blast blew the nut clean out of shot, and drenched a rather expensive flash while it was at it 😆

A very unusual and unseen aspect of Skiddaw, with the setting sun over Great Cockup. Meal Fell is a wonderfully secretive vantage point with a fantastic prospect. Althought it is included in Wainwright's famous guidebooks, very little people know of Meal Fell.

After the FIRE incident she was repaired and put back to work but was earmarked along with 3274 for transfer to Edinburgh. But true to form 3275 managed yet another errant escapade. By a giganticus cokupus through a lack of proper communication, and a stand-in Saturday foreman who put 2 and 2 together and got SIX!!! LOLOLOLOLOL, a PVS driver, (there should have been two for two buses but one had a skinful the night before and was unfit) who forgot to bring the paperwork, 3275 ended up being towed to Barnsley. Even if withdrawn, it shouldnt have gone to Barnsley as it was tagged for Preservation. Not knowing there was a GC or a tag, I was there Monday morning 06.45 to rescue the registration plates, it wasnt a problem at this time, only to find out the truth, that it was going back. So I had to be content with a couple of photos, minus front wheels and propped up on a rim. It went back to Bury for some reason ( another vehicle to collect maybe??) and 3275 true to form was damaged on the way back. Windscreen, windscreen surround and framework, and radiator all suffered, the vehicle now deemed uneconomic to repair, and so was released for preservation! You couldnt make it up!!!!! LOLOL What a fine display of organisation. They havent even removed the destinations.

Direct Rail Services Class 37s 37606, 37609 and Class 57 57309 "pride of Crewe" cruise through University with the 19:44 1Z12 Stockport to Eastleigh "Cheshire cat". It was good seeing DRS 37s at University after my last cockup, and I was quite lucky because a crosscountry 170 nearly bowled me out.

"I realized that Christmas is the time to be with the people you love..."
"Right."
"...and I realized that as dire chance and fateful cockup would have it, here I am, mid 50s, and without knowing it I've gone and spent most of my adult life with a chubby employee. And much as it grieves me to say it, it might be that the people I love is, in fact... you."
"Well, this is a surprise."
"Yeah..."
"Ten minutes at Elton John's and you're as gay as a maypole."
"I left Elton's, where there were a hefty number of half-naked chicks with their mouths open, in order to hang out with you, at Christmas."
"Well, Bill..."
"It's a terrible, terrible mistake, Chubs, but you turn out to be the fucking love of my life. And to be honest, despite all my complaining, we have had a wonderful life."
