New technology is producing the “doctorless patient” who can use a combination of a medicalized smartphone, apps, cloud computing, and algorithms to take on functions that could once be done only in clinical settings. Now, we can diagnose an ear infection, heart arrhythmia, sleep apnea, skin rash, or lesions. We can monitor glucose or blood pressure levels as often as we’d like, measure every heartbeat, assess lung function, and even get a readout on mood. Indeed, we can perform most parts of the physical exam and do our own lab tests, and then, if necessary, summon a doctor by secure video or bring one right to our homes. How does all of this work? Is it good medicine?
