It goes to back the days of flowcharts and presentations that would represent the gigantic server farm for the infrastructure of the Internet as nothing but a white cumulus of cloud accepting connections and doling out information as a floats.

This simplification means that the details of how a network’s endpoints are linked are not relevant to the understanding of the diagram.
