The plan was to camp overnight on the Cuillin outlier Marsco, and to shoot an image of the main ridge at sunrise. Progress uphill was slow and an hour or so from the top a cloud base began form up above me. Frustrated, I debated whether to continue or retreat but as I was nearer the top than the bottom, I decided to continue. To my delight, within half and hour I had passed through the cloud and now looked down upon it. For once the elements seemed to be working in my favour and this lighter cloud filled an otherwise dark Glen Sligachan below and gave me an image that I hadn’t been anticipating. By dawn, it was raining heavily and gusting and my pre-visualised image of the Ridge was put on hold.

Making the best of a bad job!

I originally arrived at Higger Tor at 6.30am for sunrise, to find it shrouded in low cloud. It quickly became apparent that it wasn't going to budge, so I decided to try to drop below the cloud and see if that presented any opportunities.

After sitting at Hook's Car, below Stanage Edge for a while, I parked at Dennis Knoll and took the Long Causeway up to the edge, to the bottom of the cloud base.

The strong winds opened up the occassional window, so I managed a few shots which weren't a total white-out!

EC Summit: Life in a Cloud-based, Software-Intensive Future at Enterprise Connect 2015

I recently received a request to make a pair of cloud shoes for the owner of an Enchanted Doll. I was surprised to learn how tiny ED's feet are. Needless to say, I had to create a new cloud base and calculate the shrinkage rate of porcelain. Through trial and error I think I got the right size. I won't know for certain until I ship them out and they are placed on those tiny, regal feet. I included a comparison between my doll's feet and ED's feet, the difference is remarkable.

The Immaculate Conception / Purisima Concepcion

18th Century

FILIPINO. Tabaco, Albay Province.

Hardwood with traces of polychromy and gesso.

A very typical image of a Philippine version of the Immaculate Conception. The Virgin is shown as a young woman with parted hair at the top and the rest of her tresses cascading down her back. Her hand would have been folded in an attitude of prayer now missing. She is dressed in flowing robes with the mantle crossing her torso diagonally from left to right and tucked under the right hand. Her inner robe is cinched with a belt tied into a knot. This treatment is typical of images made in the 18th century.

The Virgin stands on a bank of ensaymada (or brioche) cloud base. Head of cherubin on front of the cloud base. Untypically, there are no holes for horns of crescent moon. Back is flat. Condition is good for its age. Lacking hands. Large vertical crack through the center of the figure,. Traces of paint and gesso still extant.

Height: 14 in or 35 cm.

Provenance:

Current whereabouts Unknown.

Sold at the Andelson Sale, Metropolitan Galleries of Shaker Heights, OH. March 30, 2003.

*UP There Everywhere, the global cloud-based advertising agency, held its third in-person meeting in Stockholm Sweden since launching the company in 2011. The meeting focused on collaboration, company processes, international branding, social media programs, and a bit of work-life balance for people working together in the cloud around the world.

One last shot from Friday evening's storm. It was difficult to estimate the altitude of the cloud base, but it gave the impression of being less than a 100 metres over the top of my 15 story building. The clouds roiled in a sinewy manner, imparting an appearance of a massive living thing. The "appendages" here looked like either tentacles, reaching down to pluck innocent bystanders up to their doom, or the mandibles of a giant ant... I went with tentacles!
