After a relatively good night's sleep at the Tingri Friendship Hotel, we woke to more low cloud and a greasy chapati breakfast.

Leaving the others to walk back up to EBC still hopeful of a Qomolangma sighting, Fran and I decided to cut our losses and to walk down towards Rongbuk Monastery.

Our stroll took us alongside the rocky glacier route of the Rongbuk River valley, dotted with yaks. At the sacred water well, we picked up Tashi, a local Tibetan man who chatted to us as we walked on towards the monastery. About 10 minutes in, he became very insistent we stop and look back.... thereby ensuring we did get a sighting of Mount Everest, peaking out of the lower cloud base. Tu-de-chay Tashi!

At Rongbuk Monastery we pottered around the monastery kora, still getting the occasional sighting of Mount Everest / Qomolangma, and then returned to the tent camp, helping a lady carry her three thermoses of water for the final stretch.

I'd been a bit woozy all morning, and spent most of the exciting off road return drive to the Friendship Highway sleeping in the front seat. Too tired to keep my eyes open to take in the amazing scenery, the river crossings, and towing another jeep out of a bog.

At (Old) Tingri we rejoined the tarmac, and checked in to the Snow Leopard Guesthouse where we had a late lunch and a lazy afternoon to wash, repack and stroll the length of town which stretches along the main highway.

As the light faded, the cloud lifted and we were treated to a very atmospheric view of snow capped Himalayan peaks, including (somewhere!) the elusive Mt Everest

After noodle soup for supper, we made the most of the evening's hot water and hit our beds for a comfier night's sleep.

I wasn't happy at all with how this turned out, but I've posted it for Sohvimus as it's a natural conclusion of this shot.

It's a beautiful move, and it really needs to be seen in motion to fully appreciate it. It also tops out at 6,500ft so it's only seen in the 'full' display (as opposed to the alternate 'rolling' and 'flat' displays reserved for inclement weather and low cloud base).

I missed a couple of nice days earlier this month to get bright & sunny pics of our village. The forecast for the rest of the month is less than ideal so I settled for Low Vis shot of the village. Cloud base was about 200' above the village when I set out to take the pic, by the time I got to the top of the tip it was starting to dribble & the cloud base was sinking rapidly. Against all the odds, this is the best of the 3 pics I got ;o)

Immaculate Conception / Inmaculada Concepcion / Purisima Concepcion

18th Century

Ivory head and hands mounted on softwood, fully carved (detallado) body.

Hands now missing.

Nose may have been repaired.

Provenance:

Collection of Dr. Porfirio J. and Mrs. Socorro R. Callo

Purchased at auction from Sloan's Auction House of Boston, MA

(Auction tag still present on base of image)

Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Andelson

Exhibited at the Allen Memorial Art Musuem, 9 February 1981

Oberlin College. Oberlin, OH

The Virgin is depicted here as a young woman with her arms bent in the attitude of prayer. The hands, now missing, would have been joined together in front of her torso terminating into a graceful fold. The Virgin's gown crosses her body laterally at the knees, folds gracefully backwards and folds at the Virgin's left elbow.

The image may have been painted at one time consistent with many surviving image of the Purisima. However, all traces of polychromy are now gone.

The Virgin stands on a cloud base surrounded by winged cherubims. The clouds are carved in the archaic "ensaymada" (brioche) style. Holes at each side of the base indicates where the horns of the crescent moon would have been placed now missing. The eponymous "SUKSUK" or tuck found on 17th and 18th century images of the Virgin is present in the back.

Jerry and Gayle Robertson run BOLT System, a Nashville, Tennessee-based provider of cloud-based fleet management software. When developing the fleet management system for trucking firms, they applied lessons learned when they worked as executives in the high tech industry. They also researched the industry and talked to shippers, fleet operators and drivers, and took on one other task that proved effective as it was unusual and complex. They started – and ran – a trucking company to fully test the system. Jerry even got a CDL and drove trucks.
