“Cleanliness becomes more important when godliness is unlikely” – P.J. O’Rourke (American satirist).

The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" for the 18th of August is "soap foam". Even before the advent of the Coronavirus pandemic, I was always a fastidious handwasher: something drilled into my daily routine by my grandparents when I was child. Therefore, to whip up some delicate foam from my current bar of lily-of-the-valley hand soap was a pleasure to do for the sake of the theme! I hope you like my choice for this week’s theme, and that it makes you smile.

Garbage don't stink in the wintertime so it don't matter, plus it probly ought to biodegrade pretty quick in the brilliant sunlight.

The condo balcony-dwellers would be trashy if they were the ones that threw down the garbage, from off of their balconies.

Ha ha Minneapolitans like to feel such pride in the dainty cleanliness of their city, they keep their eyes closed for huge chunks of the year.

Agerola is known as "little Switzerland" for its beautiful mountain landscape, cool air, and alpine-like streets and cleanliness. This quaint village lets you spend your vacation in a relaxing mountain-like setting without forgoing the coastal pleasures, like boat trips around the divine Amalfi Coast. It includes a few hamlets under its domain, including Bomerano, Pianillo, and Camporra.

It has early Roman origins from the 3rd century BC, settled by refugees coming from San Cipriano Picentino, later conquered by the Romans, as witnessed in the numerous finds, like money dated back to the Age of the Caesars. The Romans stayed in Agerola even after the disastrous eruption of 79 AC that destroyed Herculaneum and Pompeii; the catastrophe did not stop the local development and it continued to thrive with activities like the milk production, extolled by Galen (prominent Roman physician and philosopher of Greek origin) in the 2nd century AC. Agerola became a major manufacturer of brickwork and cutlery; the locals were also considered the best ceramists of the coast.

Before the year 1000 the village got rich and famous for breeding silkworms, a trade learned during the long trips in the East. A great Jewish colony promoted the silk manufacture, which continued until the Italian unification in 1821, when sadly it came to a definitive end.

During the Middle Ages, Agerola was famous for the cultivation of a special type of rose: the white "rosaria", used to make refined perfume essences, a flourishing industry until the end of seventeenth-century. In 1844 Agerola passed to the municipality of Naples. The local breed of cattle, called "mucca agerolese", was used in the production of milk, a symbol of Agerola. The gradual impoverishment of the local population and general discontent following the Italian unification caused a backlash with popular uprisings, called brigantaggio, and Agerola became the area's headquarters.

Located just between the glittering coast with a crystalline sea and the uncontaminated lush green of the Park of Lattari Mountains, Agerola offers exceptional outdoors attractions, in the heart of the Amalfi Coast. The lovely mountain landscape, rich in chestnut woods, meadows and orchards, creates a special atmosphere, where the climate is mitigated by the nearby coast. The particular geographical position, gives to Agerola magic places to enjoy stunning views of the Amalfi Coast and the numerous path immersed into the green belt around the village, crossing the slopes where Agerola lies.

Within the municipality of Agerola is Bomerano, the Path of the Gods gateway.

Once there do not miss:

the Park "Colonia Montana": in the area of San Lazzaro with 1.5 hectares of natural beauty. During the fascism era, the natural environment was embellished with a huge central palace, used as summer camp for youths (a "colonia"). The area boasts many arboreal species, too!

Grotta del Biscotto: typical grotto with a special geological rocky conformation that recalls the famous toasted bread (pane biscottato di Agerola). The grotto is part of the lovely Path of the Gods, where you will be able to admire incredible panoramas.

If you are staying in Agerola during Holy Week just before Easter, have a look at the local procession, something intriguing. The so-called 'processione dei Battenti' is celebrated during the Holy Friday: the Battenti were special friars, so called because in ancient times they used to beat their own back with a double hemp rope and dressed a white hood to cover their faces. The locals do perform this ancient tradition, walking all around the village's narrow streets, accompanied with popular and liturgical chants.

Ernst Theodor Amandus Litfaß from Berlin recognized the value of advertising early on and invented the “advertising column” named after him in 1854.

He wanted to bring order and cleanliness to the cityscape and prevent the wild plastering of posters on house walls.

In Berlin vernacular, the royal court printer Litfaß was therefore referred to as a “column saint,” in reference to the ancient temple statues.

If you resolve to be less dramatic in the new year ... Like every year, I made a calendar for my friends, this time it was to be a Düsseldorf calendar.

Almost inevitably, two of the ten Litfaß advertising columns, works by the artist Christoph Pöggeler, typical of Düsseldorf, had to be included.

I associate this with the wish that the new year – 2026 – will bring you many wonderful shared experiences and lots of enjoyable leisure activities.

An imposing Victorian building that was once a charitable school to help ragged children is now a residential property. A poster on the walls says, “The Shaftsbury Society’s charitable union of The Mint and Gospel Lighthouse mission for the guidance of ragged children in matters of cleanliness, appearance and manners thus enabling them to take up a military career no matter how short.” An engraved stone on the building says, “To the glory of God this stone was laid by the right honourable Lord Mayor of London Sir William P Treloar November 13th, 1906.” (layersoflondon.com)

I was quite attracted by the cleanliness of the vendor who sells this salad dish.

There are two rules for travellers in China: Nothing is ever as it seems, and Take nothing for granted. On the first day the sky was clear and the air was good. On this, our second day, the mist was impenetrable, our guide told us there is no smog in China, only mist. Nothing is ever as it seems ....

We drove on a magnificent highway out of Beijing to see and climb on the Great Wall. Our guide was brilliant, he invited us to ask questions and he answered with surprising candour. We asked about his life, where he lives, the cost of living, education and childcare (he had two children in the time of the one child policy). He explained it was possible to have a second child after paying an enormous tax.

We wanted to know about housing, public transport, the costs and complexity of owning a car. It was amazing to drive for more than an hour on a highway edged with rose gardens, and rose gardens in the median strip. There was no litter anywhere, this was the prettiest and cleanest city I had ever seen.

He said workers are assigned a strip of the highway and it is their job to care for the garden on that strip. Similarly there is a person responsible for the cleanliness of every block. That's why there is no litter.

No matter where you go in China, tour groups are funnelled into retail spaces and subjected to the hard sell. We were going to the Great Wall, but first we had to visit a place where jade was carved and sold. This was my first experience of the hard sell, and the pressure was relentless. Have no doubt, capitalism is alive and well in communist China. I took this shot in the jade shop where we were shadowed by smartly dressed women the whole time.

I wrongly assumed the jade shop was a one off experience (assume nothing), but it happened at least once every day we were in China, and I hated it. Very soon I refused to enter these places, and was assigned a minder to keep an eye on me.

Excerpt from ckrumlov.cz:

The remarkable system of Connecting Corridors offered the Castle residents the possiblity of free movement among the important places of the Castle's nearby surroundings. It is evident now that it was not just for personal safety or protection against inconvenient weather; we can notice even now that the area of both of the Lower Castle Courtyards particularly served various practical purposes. Likewise, we should not harbor any illusions about the cleanliness of Latrán streets at the turn of the Mediaeval and New Age period.

The promenade through the roofs, accented by wonderful views onto the historical town, has its own unique charm even after the passing of many centuries.

It is comforting to see the usual correct maintenance of the facades in the local buildings, thus giving a feeling of cleanliness and freshness, very necessary in the seasons in which the sun is dominant.

Captured through the big half-oval window of the historical central station in Frankfurt/Germany, one of the most important financial metropolis in Europe.

Of course the high bank buildings are shining perfectly in the sun out there - symbolizing the cleanliness and transparency of banking - while actually the dirt covers the windows of the ordinary, humble life.

But for me this picture unveils where the real dirt is, no matter how much they clean their buildings.

This is 'the boss'. We call her just mama. She is a very beautiful female red squirrel at the park. The picture shows her on a thin branch. Even though the background is a bit twitchy I like the cleanliness of the image. It's a few months old already, but for some reason, I just found it in my catalog (Squirrels-2019-0305.jpg)

This is the first in a series from the Victorian resort of New Brighton, which is on the opposite bank of the Mersey to Liverpool.

This place is undergoing somewhat of a renaissance...back in it's heyday, it was a great playground for many people, with a direct ferry link from Liverpool Pier Head, a tower that was taller than the famous Blackpool tower, a ballrooms where the Beatles played many times, with the likes of Little Richard, and a huge outdoor swimming pool.

The area around the North West mouth of the Mersey, which has a lighthouse and fort on the foreshore still has fine sandy beaches...a testament to the increasing cleanliness of the river.

This area is known as the Victorian quarter, and a number of old properties have been refurbished, and on many, large murals have appeared.

I have captured a few of these....and will put them up each day this week.

This first one is controversial...locals thought the owners, Wetherspoons, had let this building go to rack and ruin, while waiting for their planning permission to be approved : It certainly is a bit of an eyesore...so a local artist decided to show some displeasure with this eye catching mural...which has now been painted over...spoilsports...but not before I captured it....

GROUP: LOOKING CLOSE...ON FRIDAY

THEME: TOILETRIES

SUBJECT: A BAR OF SOAP

ah! the sublime simple pleasure of freshly cleaned, warm white flanel sheets. it trumps that first handful of hot popcorn, downing a cold brew on a hot summer day, and finishing a book. but in my opinion its slotted behind that first cup of coffee in the morning, a deep playful kiss, and the end of business on friday.

have a great weekend my friends. i hope you all enjoy a few simple pleasures - and take lots of dirty pictures. cheers

Calotype (modified Pélegry); Canson Marker paper, cut to 4x5"". Developed with gallic acid and acetonitrate of silver. About 10 minutes exposure at f8 (ev 11,5).

Graflex Crown Graphic camera, made c.1949; Kodak Anastigmat f4.5 lens; 4x5 calotype.

Positive image made in PHotoshop from the original paper negative.

This already the 3rd batch of calotypes, following the Pélegry method much closer, just changing the whey for honey. Now I incorporate lactose to the iodizer and dextrin to the sensitizer, and wash the papers in the sensitization for more minutes.

Clearly the cleanliness has improved, with much less fogging and spots.

View of the chapel of Santa Margarida de Vilaltella, in Perafita. I have a special place for this chapel as I helped restore it in 1988 when I was still a teenager. Well, we actually removed all the earth and stones from the collapsed vault. Later they restored the roof. The building in question has been known since 1223, and has Romanesque origins; but in 1825 it was already restored and enlarged (new door, sacristy and doubled in height). It seems that during the civil war it was demolished by the anarchists.
