As we arrived, Lospalos was celebrating the anniversary of the 30 August 1999 referendum (monitored by the UN) that led to the independence of Timor Leste / East Timor from Indonesia. The celebrations included processions (especially of school children in their uniforms) and the organised, perhaps partially metaphorical, cleaning of the streets and public areas by the local people. As one of my fellow travellers was coincidentally a representative of UNDP we were welcomed by the town's elders to their celebrations.
