my veena recital for an art exhibition

Il y a déjà bien des années sur l'invitation d'un ami, j'ai joué de la veena pour cette exposition d'art.

Many years ago, at the invitation of a friend, I played veena for this art exhibition.

La veena est un instrument à cordes pincées de la musique classique de l'Inde du Sud ou Musique Karnatique.

The veena is a plucked string instrument of South Indian classical music or Karnatic Music.

The interior of a rare cello by English luthier Lockey Hill, completed shortly before his execution for horse theft in 1795. In this photo we can see the tool marks of the original maker, as well as new wood and repairs carried out through the centuries. Shot with a Lumix S1R and a Laowa Probe lens, 432 images at various focal distances have been stacked together to give a cavernous feel, as if the cello has become its own recital hall. Photographed whilst under restoration at the String Instrument Company, New Zealand.

Classical music for relax and take a rest.

Crafted around 1780 this is a fine example of Lockey Hill's prolific work, which was unfortunately cut short after he was hung for horse theft in 1796! His family would go on to found Hill & Sons, probably the finest instrument workshop ever to exist in England.

The cello is seen from the inside. It's currently in the process of restoration. It needs a lot of work but someone's going to have an absolutely exquisite instrument once this is all done and dusted!

This is part of a series I'm undertaking on the internals of fine instruments. I use a special technique called focus stacking which has the effect of making these small spaces seem vast. This is a simple optical illusion. Our brains are wired to expect close up macro shots to have a shallow depth of field. By combining dozens, sometimes hundreds, of shots I ensure that the photo is sharp from front to back. This tricks the mind into believing that the image is of something much larger than reality.

The Atheneum of Bucharest is considered its most beautiful building. The elegant venue for concerts of classical music is decorated inside by a panoramic mosaic depicting history of Romania from the epoch of the Ancient Dacians to XX century. The area around the Atheneum is home to art museums, upscale hotels and restaurants.

The classical composer Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936) was born in Bologna, in northern Italy, where this square is named after him. Not only was he one of the leading Italian composers of the 20th century but he was also a violinist, teacher and musicologist.

Respighi’s compositions range across opera, ballet, orchestral suites, choral and chamber music, plus transcriptions of 16th and 17th century Italian compositions. One of his most popular pieces is The Birds, (Gli Uccelli ), a delightful suite for small orchestra in which he captures the sounds of our avian friends.

Beethoven't ninth and final symphony is one of the greatest pieces of Western music in all of history. The composition and concept behind it is beyond "Olympian", as it has often been described. Certainly it is one of the most powerful, hair-raising and rapture inducing musical pieces I have ever encountered. If you have the chance to see it performed live with a full symphony orchestra and large choir, I HIGHLY recommend it. Doing so years ago left me utterly speechless.

I chose to do this for the contest because the opening lines of the Choral, the final moment, "O Freunde, nicht diese Töne !"

( Oh friends, not these sounds ! ) came to mind when looking at Classical paintings of battles. Then when I saw the portrait of Beethoven himself the whole project crystallized. The title is a call to end all wars and to bring about the unity of the human race - beyond nations - "Alle menschen werden bruder". This is hardly a call without relevance today.

Music Link: "Ninth Symphony - Chorale" Opus 125 ( 1822-24 ) - Ludwig van Beethoven. Conducted in this video by Leonard Bernstein at a 1989 performance in Berlin to celebrate the removal of the Berlin Wall. Each conductor brings their own interpretation to the podium and thankfully Bernstein had the great sensitivity NOT to rush this symphony as so many others have done. The opening movement requires a stately grandeur to it that's best brought out by letting those gargantuan opening chord sequences in D Minor breathe and expand in consciousness to their fullest extant before careening ahead to the next ones. There are newer and sharper videos but Bernstein's nailed it for me for his impeccable and passionate interpretation.

Exactly 222 Years Ago Today, Beethoven Premiered His 1st Symphony - IMRAN™

(Enjoy the story & my words, image source unknown)

Yesterday I posted about ABBA's creating a song, Voulez-Vous, 43 years ago. Well, just a few countries over, exactly 222 years ago today, on April 2, 1800, the musical legend and genius Ludwig van Beethoven premiered his 1st Symphony in C Major, at the Vienna Burgtheater.

He was 29 then, and also performed on the piano at the premiere. While some of his other pieces of music are more dramatic and recognized by the masses, his first one was also notable for changing many of the practices of the time.
