The idea here was to practice seeing and drawing something we did not have a ready-made "symbol" for: slow down, follow the lines in our palm with our eyes and without looking at the paper, follow along with the pencil. We turned in our chair so we could not see the paper on the table and rested the hand we were drawing on the back of the chair. If we reached a dead end, we were to backtrack with the eyes and pencil until we found a new turn-off. Drawing, the teacher said, is about slowing way down, and about learning to see.
