The crows claim that a single crow could destroy the sky. This is undoubted, but it proves nothing against heaven, for heaven means; Impossibility of crows.

Quote by Franz Kafka

*************

There were at least three other red deer stags close by in the forest bellowing in response to this one protecting his hinds...

I can't claim to have taken this image, but I am seen here with my head down concentrating upon my next step as I make the final approach to the wonderfully located and named summit of Sgurr nan Spainteach.

Long time hiking pal, Mark took this one.

It's a welcoming afternoon in Costa Rica, with the last of the sun's rays pouring through the window to reveal a warm and luxurious bath. The room is adorned with relaxed boho tapestries, while incense and fresh tropical plants mingle with the scents of Epsom salt and rose. But this scene of decadence takes an unexpected turn as a curious gang of otters sneaks in through the open window, claiming the spa bath for themselves. Looks like you'll find company instead of solace in this whimsical bath adventure!

Under naupaka kahakai, this gorgeous mōlī claims prime nesting territory. Laysan albatrosses with established pair bonds are the first of the season to arrive at the breeding colony. Males generally arrive first in mid-November and stake out a nesting site, females arrive a few days or so later. After a brief reaffirming courtship dance followed by mating, the couple return to nomadically soaring over the north Pacific for about two weeks to forage and fatten up for the rigors of nesting. The pair return to the nest where the female lays a single egg then departs to replenish the enormous energy deficit required to produce a beer can sized egg. The male takes the first incubation shift and fasts for two weeks until the female returns to relieve him. They alternate incubation duties and foraging with increasingly shorter shifts. If all goes well, the egg will hatch in about 60 days.

My very own little ferry after staking my claim on it, twice to be sure, if you look closely. I see I forgot to run any NR and it's a huge crop. Seriously just out playing with my 70-200E FL lens on a windy day. On the tripod here but with the ballhead loose and VR on. I have spent considerable time with the previous version and also with the very handy f4 version. It's safe to say this E version is a monster that will teach me things even on my most stubborn days. It might be front focusing just slightly here; time will tell.

Thank you for your warm and kind visits my friends. I appreciate you (yes you) a lot! :)

Liberty Harbor, Brunswick, GA

We pushed through some densely overgrown scrub to reach the remains of the old liberty ship piers in Brunswick, GA. Still up for new adventures, nothing makes this old girl happier than laying claim to new territory.

"The natural harbor of Brunswick, located 70 miles south of Savannah, had a long maritime history before the outbreak of World War II. Located at the confluence of three rivers, the harbor was used as an exportation port for goods such as cotton and rice. When the Emergency Shipbuilding Program was announced by President Franklin Roosevelt in January of 1941, Brunswick was one of sixteen ports chosen to construct cargo vessels that would aid Allied forces in Europe. After the U.S. declared war, these cargo vessels, called “Liberty Ships,” were churned out at incredible speed. The 16,000 workers at the Brunswick shipyards built 99 ships, 85 of them Liberty Ships, from 1941-1945. They were capable of hauling thousands of tons of cargo across the Atlantic Ocean."

The Perkin Warbeck; named after the man who claimed to be the rightful heir to the throne of England and, in 1497, entered Taunton with an army of 8,000. Perkin Warbeck was cross-examined by King Henry VII, in Taunton Castle, and eventually executed.

A test shot with my new "used" 16mm Sony lens.

I know its not the best of lenses but it does make the a6300 small enough to go in a pocket. I can live with deficiencies to gain the convenience. I have the 18-105mm and its a monster on this small camera - not always what you need in the street.

A fine drop of beer - The Doom Bar is a sandbar at the mouth of the estuary of the River Camel, where it meets the Celtic Sea on the north coast of Cornwall, England.

Until the twentieth century, access to Padstow's harbour was via a narrow channel between the Doom Bar and the cliffs at Stepper Point, a difficult passage for sailing ships to navigate, especially in north-westerly gales when the cliffs would cut off the wind. Many ships were wrecked on the Doom Bar.

This is a peek into the interior of the Llangernyw Yew, a tree claimed to be somewhere between four and five thousand years old, although actually aging a yew tree is pretty difficult as they are invariably hollow. If the estimate is accurate, this is among the oldest living things on the planet. Just about every ancient yew in the UK is in a churchyard but there is no law that protects them automatically. Many have been lost to soulless individuals suffering from a virulent need to 'tidy up' churchyards. If you think that is a bad thing, you might want to sign this petition: www.change.org/p/save-britain-s-ancient-yew-trees-before-...

Finally finding the artifact he has long been searching for, the archeologist prepares to claim his prize. Click this link to see an image of his previous adventure.

Strobist info:

The scene was illuminated by two Nikon SB900 and one SB700 speedlights. The SB900's were placed 90° CL/CR, three feet away from and 20-inches above the subjects. They were fired in Manual mode @ 1⁄64 power through Neewer 24" x 24" gridded soft boxes.

The SB700 was used to illuminate the ceramic hand. It was placed 45° CL, slightly above camera level and three-feet away from the subject. It had a Rogue Blue-Green gel attached and was fired in Manual mode @ 1⁄128 power through a gridded snoot.

The SB900's were triggered by three PocketWizard Plus X's; the SB700 was placed in SU-4 mode and triggered by the other flashes.

View of ice on the Northwestern Passages and eastern shoreline of Nunavut Land Claims Agreement - Hall Beach Inuit Owned Land Nunavut Canada

After reports claiming that Class 60 haulage could come to an end soon on services such as this, how pleasing was it to have this loco once again doing this service?

The sinking bell tower is one of Laoag City’s most famous landmarks, in fact, one of the top Ilocos Norte tourist attractions. The structure is claimed to be the most solid and tallest bell tower in the Philippines. This massive 45-meter (150 foot) bell tower was also built by the Augustinians in 1612.

The Chuck Wagon has been a West Colfax icon since 1959, when it arrived from New Jersey. Technically, Ken and I are playing loose with time and space again. We have set this piece in 1958, the only year Colorado plates featured a skier. We claim, "Artistic License".

Here, on a hill overlooking Colfax Avenue, the iconic metal diner form has been augmented by a giant cowboy cook. He has been directing folks to the place for almost 60 years now and he hasn't aged a bit. There is another location for Davies Chuck Wagon, in a more traditional style of restaurant architecture, a few miles from here. It also has a large cowboy out front but none of the neon lettering this fellow enjoys.

Naturally, we had lunch there before they closed for the day and left the place perfect for a shoot. I had a really nice rueben sandwich on marbled rye bread. Ken had the patty melt. It was Ken's first visit and only my third. The place was there when my family moved to Denver in 1965 but it took me 48 years before I sat down at the counter.

As the Motels that still line West Colfax have turned into flop houses and the neon signs have been torn down or left broken, the Chuck Wagon is still serving, still thriving.

Mt. Airy, NC claims to be the inspiration for the fictional town of Mayberry, from The Andy Griffith Show, Griffith's home town. Over the years, they've capitalized on that claim.

This image goes right along with my last one. She said it was her's, and then she claimed it! :-)

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - The Air Force's 311th and 314th Training Squadrons went head to head on Aug. 31 during the 517th Training Group Airman Challenge event held at Soldier Field. Athletes from each training squad competed in a multitude of physical challenges such as pull ups, tire flipping, and tug-of-war in front of a large crowd of Airmen, family members and curious onlookers. At the conclusion of the event medals were given for best male team, best female team, best overall male athlete and best overall female athlete. The 314th training squadron claimed top honors as the winning team.

On our last day in Yosemite, our group decided to forego the Horsetail Falls as we had just shot it a couple of days earlier, and camp out instead for the sunset at the Gates of the Valley. We were a bit bummed to discover that we were not the only ones with this idea (we figured EVERYONE would be camping out for the Horsetail) and we had to squish ourselves into the menagerie that was already in place when we arrived.

Matt Frankel had an interesting post earlier today where another photographer tried to lay claim to a huge area of real estate just as the sun was setting, and Matt, being sensible, simply set up his tripod and began shooting away. The guy completely freaked out, assuming that the rest of the world should cater to his every whim until he was done with his shot. Matt handled it very well, but this other guy needs to learn to deal with people ALWAYS being in his shot if he is going to keep his sanity as a photographer.

Well....the shot above was one of those situations where it was every man for himself. I could have stomped off in a huff, or waded waist deep into the Merced River in front of everyone, or pitched a fit and thrown everyone else's tripod into the water, but instead, I tried to find a spot where I thought I could get rid of the people and tripods after I got home.

So that's what you have here. In front of me was some guy hanging off of that tree trunk to the left with his tripod right in front of me, another dude was smashing his way into my frame to the right, and third guy with a tripod was dead center.

Thanks to Photoshop and content aware, I still came home with my shot and I didn't have to push anyone into the river to get it. :)

While visiting the star system simply known as J-216, the explorers of Nova Team have come across an interesting planet. While not completely suitable for human life, the planet boasts some interesting mineral deposits that may prove to be useful materials worth mining one day.

Here we have (from left to right) Lt Commander Samual Steele taking a photo of Commander Lance Lane, Lt Sydeny Stargazer and Chief Petty Officer Clarke Cooper placing a flag in the rough terrian of the alien planet, staking a claim for the Federation.
