Clacton-on-Sea is the largest town in the Tendring peninsula and district in Essex, eastern England, and was founded as an urban district in 1871. It is a seaside resort that saw a peak of tourists in the summer months between the 1950s and 1970s.

The town's economy continues to rely significantly on entertainment and day-trip facilities and it is strong in the service sector, with a large retired population. The north-west part of the town has two business/industrial parks. In the wider district, agriculture and occupations connected to the Port of Harwich provide further employment.

The first Clacton opened on 27 July 1871 as a landing point for steamships operated by the Woolwich Steam Packet Company. In 1893 it was lengthened to 1180 ft and entertainment facilities, including a pavilion and a waiting room, were added. During World War II, the Pier was breached to prevent it being used as a landing stage. A floating German mine also caused considerable damage.

In 1973, a fire caused significant structural damage to the pier, particularly the roller coaster. In 1978, a severe storm caused additional significant structural weakness. It underwent significant modernisation in the 1990s

Last night I had a thought, possibly I should go on a trip, get out of Norwich for a day and see somewhere new. When I got to the train station I typed in the first 3 letters that came into my head "CLA" - My housemate's name is Claire hence where the letters came from. So off i went to Clacton.

We enjoyed attending the Ganesha Visarjan festival in Clacton, Essex with statues of the elephant-headed Hindu god Ganesh immersed in the sea after a splendid procession. Thank you Sri Karpaha Vinayagar Temple Walthamstow for organising this, and Tendring Disctrict Council for supporting it.

The Postcard

A postcard bearing no publisher's name. The image is a real photograph.

The card was posted in Clacton-on-Sea using a 1d. stamp on Thursday the 20th. August 1925. It was sent to:

Miss Shirley,

24, Althorp Road,

Wandsworth Common,

London SW 17.

The pencilled message on the divided back was as follows:

"Wednesday.

Dear Doll,

You will see we have

arrived here. The

weather was lovely

until today, but it has

turned out the usual,

rather chilly and dull.

Love to all,

Winnie."

The Clacton-on-Sea War Memorial

The statue on the right is a war memorial in the Garden of Remembrance. It is made of bronze and granite, and was designed by Charles Leonard Hartwell (1873 – 1951).

The 1924 memorial commemmorates Clacton men and women who fell in the Great War, WWII, and other conflicts.

The memorial features a bronze winged Victory sculpture, with head slightly downcast, wearing a loose, flowing dress. She holds a quill in her left hand and a laurel wreath in her right. The statue stands atop a layered plinth of Cornish granite.

The statue is 200 cm high, and the plinth is 440 cm high.

Clacton-on-Sea is the largest town in the Tendring peninsula in Essex, England, and was founded as an urban district in the year 1871. It is a seaside resort that saw a peak of tourists in the summer months between the 1950's and the 1970's.

The town's economy continues to rely significantly on entertainment and day-trip facilities, and it is strong in the service sector, with a large retired population.

In 1936, Billy Butlin bought and refurbished the West Clacton Estate, an amusement park to the west of the town. He opened a new amusement park on the site in 1937, and then, a year later on 11 June 1938, opened the second of his holiday camps.

This location remained open until 1983 when, due to changing holiday tastes, Butlins decided to close the facility. It was then purchased by former managers of the camp who reopened it as a short-lived theme park, called Atlas Park. The land was then sold and redeveloped with housing.

An Assassination in Canton

So what else happened on the day that Winnie posted the card to Doll?

Well, on the 20th. August 1925, the day after the Chinese Kuomintang government in Canton (now Guangzhou) had banned British and Japanese ships from entering or leaving the harbor, the Republic of China's finance minister, Liao Zhongkai, was assassinated as he stepped out of his limousine for a meeting of the Kuomintang's Executive Committee.

Five gunmen with Mauser C96 semi-automatic pistols shot him multiple times outside the building.

John Rassias

The day also marked the birth in Manchester, New Hampshire of John Rassias.

John was an American professor who developed the Rassias Method, (the Dartmouth Intensive Language Model) for the teaching of foreign languages John died in 2015.

Robert T. Latshaw

Also born on the 20th. August 1925, in St. Louis, was Robert T. Latshaw.

Robert was a U.S. Air Force fighter ace during the Korean War, with five shootdowns. He was killed at the age of 30 in the crash of a Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star near Boca del Rio Air Base in Venezuela in 1956.
