The City of Hoover has seen enormous growth in its sports programs over the past 10 years and needed a new complex that would fulfill their existing needs, allow for growth and give the City the ability to create new revenue streams and take advantage of sports tourism by hosting large tournament events. Hoover had not built any new athletic facilities in 15 years. At the same time the City’s sports participation had increased by multiples of 200% - 500% depending on the sport. The growth was caused by increases in both youth and adult sports leagues, as well as the relatively recent popularity of additional sports.

 

The multi-purpose Finley Center, which connects to the existing Hoover Met baseball stadium with a covered walkway, is able to accommodate a full-size football or soccer field, nine regulation-size basketball courts, 12 regulation-size volleyball courts or six indoor tennis courts. It can also seat 2,400 for banquets and 5,000 for events with general seating, such as a graduation ceremony or concert. Additional features of the indoor facility include a recreational walking track suspended 14 feet in the air, an athletic training and rehab center, and a food court.

 

The Finley Center sits on a 120 acre site that GMC master planned and includes fields for soccer, lacrosse, football, baseball and softball, tennis courts, a play ground walking track and splash pad.

In the 19th century, New York City was a burgeoning industrial and commercial metropolis - the largest city in the United States and second largest in the world. As the city's population increased, people began to call for construction of an underground railway. Many unusual engineering challenges had to be overcome, not the least of which was construction in a dense urban area. After lengthy legal battles over property rights and the debt limit of the city, ground was broken on March 24, 1900.

 

When the subway opened in 1904, it was operated by the private Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT). In 1940 the City merged the IRT with the Brooklyn Manhattan Transit system (BMT) and the Independent Subway System (IND), creating a single municipal agency. Today the New York subway system carries over 1 billion riders each year.

I went for a visit to Derby for their comedy festival and to spend the weekend with Gemma.

 

Saturday morning we went to Belper to the river gardens and the horseshoe weir, which is an incredible piece of civil engineering!

 

The gardens are lovely and tranquil. It was a great little alternative to our usual trip to Dovedale - which we called off because the weather wasn't great.

Trenholm State Community College is currently in the process of architecturally re-branding their Patterson Campus. Trenholm State Community College’s Automotive Collision Repair Program was moved from the Trenholm Campus to the Patterson Campus, and in doing so, will utilize an existing 18,727sf metal building/warehouse which was conducive for the collision repair area. Additional square footage was added to the building to encompass two classrooms, a resource room, offices, tool storage, and a paint shop. The paint shop consists of two new pre-fabricated paint booths, mixing station, and prep area A new façade was developed to enhance the overall appearance of the building. This building is the first of many to feature the new architectural style.

Trenholm State Community College’s Administration and Financial Aid Building project included a new metal retrofit roof and the renovation of an existing building that houses administration offices, financial aid and other student amenities as part of there “Student Success” center to allow for additional classrooms. The existing spaces were updated with new finishes and associated energy efficient mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work. A new entrance and sitework were designed to give a good first impression to students and administrators entering campus.

Trenholm State Community College purchased state of the art prefabricated welding booths for their welding program. However, the buildings electrical system could not accommodate the loads for the booths. Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood was hired to prepare the architecture and engineering drawings to allow the program to use their new welding stations.

Building B & Building D were renovations that include interior and exterior work, re-roofing, structural, mechanical, electrical, civil, site work, exterior lighting, new streets, repairs and alterations to existing streets and parking lots, landscaping, and sidewalks.

 

Quite an experience. The longest road tunnel in the world, near Aurland in western Norway. It's split into four sections by three of these "daylight chambers", which attempt to break up the monotony of 24.4km (over 15 miles) underground.

 

It's modern, clean, dry, and ventialted compared to some further north. Also, the tarmac's continuous and it didn't have any sheep lurking in there, which was nice!

Built more than a century before the reign of Napoleon, Frankford Avenue Bridge on U.S. Route 13 in the northeastern portion of the city of Philadelphia is without doubt the oldest stone arch bridge America still in service on a major travel route and most likely the oldest stone bridge anywhere in the country. When it was constructed, each male member of the surrounding community was compelled to contribute a share of either labor or money.

 

The three-span bridge, intended originally to carry one of the first highways in America, the King's Road from Philadelphia to New York, was only 18 feet wide when first built with barely enough room for two teams of horse to pass each other. It was widened substantially in 1893 to accommodate trolley traffic and again in 1950, to accommodate automobile traffic. Pennypack Creek, which runs the length of 1600-acre Pennypack Park, is today stocked with trout annually as far downstream as the Frankford Avenue Bridge.

 

Facts

 

- On April 24, 1775 at five o'clock in the afternoon, an express rider from Boston, having traveled for five days, reportedly crossed the Frankford Avenue Bridge to bring news of the Battle of Lexington and the beginning of the American Revolution.

- The first stagecoach service from Philadelphia to New York, crossing the Frankford Avenue Bridge, began in 1756, with the trip requiring three days. By 1783, the trip took only a day aboard a coach named the Flying Machine.

- A toll booth was installed at the bridge's south end when the Frankford and Bristol Turnpike opened in 1803. It remained in place until the roadway was taken over by the city of Philadelphia in 1892.

- Since the Frankford Avenue Bridge was built, 60 other bridges in the city of Philadelphia have been either closed or abandoned.

The idea of a canal eliminating the costly and dangerous sea trip around the Massachusetts peninsula of Cape Cod was envisioned as early as 1623 by Pilgrim leader Miles Standish. It was not until financier August Belmont became involved in 1906, however, that sufficient funds for the project could be raised. Belmont had been the primary backer of New York City's first subway, and chose the subway's chief engineer, William Barclay Parsons, as the canal's project director.

 

In 1905, Parsons had sided with the majority of the Panama Canal commission in recommending that "The Big Ditch" be built as a sea-level canal without locks. He and the other commissioners eventually were overruled. With the Cape Cod Canal, however, Parsons proved that a 17.5-mile, sea-level canal without locks could accommodate a difference in tides at each end of almost three hours and nearly five feet. Originally 480 feet wide and 34 feet deep, the canal was enlarged in 1940, making it the widest canal in the world.

 

Facts

 

- Parsons also showed that the current created by the varying tides at either end of the Cape Cod Canal would prevent ice from forming and eliminate the need for maintenance dredging. Three years after the Canal opened, he published a landmark paper on tidal-canal hydraulics.

- In the two decades prior to 1915, more than 135 ships were wrecked, 63 lives were lost and $1.6 million in cargo destroyed attempting to travel around Cape Cod.

- Originally financed as a toll passageway for $16 million, the canal was purchased in 1928 for $11.4 million by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which has operated it toll-free ever since and maintains the surrounding area for recreational use.

- The three bridges spanning the canal (two for roads and one for rails) were built during the Great Depression, using $4.6 million in federal funds and providing more than two years of employment for as many as 700 workers.

- Average high-tide waters move through the canal at four-to-five miles per hour; tides accentuated by a full moon or other conditions, however, can increase the current to seven miles per hour or more.
