During the spring, horseshoe crabs congregate along Florida's shores to spawn. Each year, our biologists ask the public to report observations of horseshoe crab mating activities in order to help identify nesting beaches around the state. "Citizen scientists" interested in contributing to the FWC’s survey efforts should have the best luck sighting horseshoe crabs around high tide during high tides in the three days before and after a new or full moon.

European Union Prize for Citizen Science by Ars Electronica

The European Union Prize for Citizen Science gives recognition to Citizen Science Initiatives for outstanding achievements, allowing them to continue and expand their work and showcase it to a wider audience.

Ars Electronica awards the European Union Prize for Citizen Science on behalf of the European Commission in the context of the IMPETUS project. The European Union Prize for Citizen Science will be awarded for the first time in 2023.

Blue blood by FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute

Bonus fact: Horseshoe crabs are extremely important to the biomedical industry because of their unique, copper-based blue blood contains a substance called Limulus amebocyte lysate. The substance, which coagulates in the presence of small amounts of bacterial toxins, is used to test for sterility of medical equipment and virtually all intravenous drugs.
