Horseshoe crabs have been around for approximately 450 million years and are an important part of a marine ecosystem. Their populations have declined in recent decades due to overfishing and habitat destruction. In order to gain a better understanding of horseshoe crab biology and mating activities, this management plan requires all Atlantic and Gulf coast states to identify horseshoe crab nesting beaches.

USGS iCoast by U.S. Geological Survey

USGS iCoast — Hurricane season is currently underway. Do you know what happens to our coasts after these extreme storms? The USGS has launched a new crowdsourcing application called "iCoast – Did the Coast Change?” to show you these coastal changes from extreme storms.

iCoast allows citizen scientists to identify changes to the coast by comparing aerial photographs taken before and after storms.

Crowdsourced data from iCoast will help USGS improve predictive models of coastal change and educate the public about the vulnerability of coastal communities to extreme storms.

There are few virtues in this frankly sad and low photographic quality image. That's the point! It's purpose is twofold: to positively identify this dead moth and log it with Moth Trackers, an initiative of Zoos Victoria to monitor this particular moth's population. I can definitively tell you that the population has declined by one.

Around 2021 there was an estimated 99.5% population crash of the Bogong Moth — Agrotis infusa. That's enough to put it on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of endangered species. Why should we care? Apart from being an indicator that something is not as it was, this little moth fed lots of other creatures; including the endangered Mountain Pygmy Possum, an yes, humans. The word bogong simply means mountain so Mount Bogong, like Avon River, is a tautology.

This little moth migrates from the black soil plain country — where they breed in the soil — to the Australian Alps where it rests over Summer in joint cracks of granite boulders, and in the boulder fields. Those same boulder fields are where the Mountain Pygmy Possum lives and hibernates under the Winter's snow. Bogong Moths are high fat snacks which bulk up the possums, helping them to survive.

Light pollution is an issue for these navigators of the night. Used to celestial navigation, other lights cause a lot of issues for them. While I wait for new curtains, due tomorrow, at sparrows', light spills out where the curtains are not. Don't get me started on superfluous exterior lighting! You see, this little carcass was at the bottom of the screen door; a glass door backlit last night.

Ah, and the human food comment. Aboriginal Australians travelled down towards the mountains for annual gatherings and feasts. I say towards because not everyone made the full journey. The plains around the confluence of the two rivers above what is now Canberra would host these groups and their corroborees. I've mentioned before how the topography guides the feet up into the mountains. This was one of the drivers to follow those valleys, up through those gaps and higher to the peaks, the bogongs. The men, only the men, would head into the mountains to smoke the moths from the crevices, grind them up and ostensibly take them back down to the plains. Yeah, I can already see you doing the sums!

Well, anyway, this one has been logged now. Hopefully their death and this log entry will add something to the picture of how, when and why of the lives and population of this little moth.
