Penrose Point State Park

Coburg North, Victoria.

Volunteers from the Merri Paddle group collecting and analysing water samples from the Merri Creek in then north of Melbourne as part of an evaluation of a number of sites along the creek for their suitability as platypus habitat.

Only occasional sightings of the platypus, Australia's famous duckbilled semi aquatic mammal, have occurred on the Merri Creek over the years as this once very degraded (but partially recovered) waterway has not been suitable platypus habitat for many decades as a result of industrial and agricultural encroachment on the catchment.

The hope is that this type of monitoring will create greater community awareness of the condition of the creek leading to advocacy and action by citizens and government to fully restore the Merri Creek environment.

Arkys lancearis / Triangular Crab Spider. ️

Eprapah Creek, Victoria Point QLD Australia.

22nd February 2026.

Yesterday's little bug hunt in the park up the road gave me a great opportunity to photograph some spectacular Triangular Crab Spiders. This cute little guy sat still just long enough for a quick focus stack.

This particular image is a 17 shot hand-held focus stack.

I aligned all the images in Adobe CC, saved them and then blended the images together for the final result on Helicon Focus.

Great Blue Herons: nest building in Destin, Florida.

Day 7 (Pupation in Progress). The caterpillar has been hanging in this position for nearly 24 hours and is in the process of shedding it's skin for the final time. It will pump and wriggle until the skin is pushed to the rear end, which where the cremaster is attached to the milkweed leaf by strong silk threads. Once it is free of the skin it will form a soft, wet, green pupa, also called a cocoon. This will harden in a few hours and darken in color from a deep green to black. The process for it to emerge will take about two weeks.

Happy Feathery Friday! They are nearly ready to fly -- tonight at sunset they were practicing flapping and hopping to a nearby branch, then back to the nest.
