Trotters, North Dakota
Wikipedia:
Trotters is an unincorporated community in Golden Valley County, North Dakota, United States. Trotters is located on North Dakota Highway 16, 28.3 miles (45.5 km) north of Beach. The community did not receive telephone service until 1972, and Highway 16, its only road, was paved in the 1980s.
Leonard Hall, who moved to Trotters in 1956, was the town's only resident for much of the twentieth century. Hall was the postmaster of the Trotters post office, which opened in 1904[3] and served area ranchers as far as 28 miles (45 km) away from Trotters, as few other post offices operated in the region.[5] The post office also served as the town's grocery store and gas station, and Hall lived in the back of the building. Two other buildings, a disused church and an empty abandoned structure, also stood in the town.[6] The post office closed in 1995 when Hall's poor health caused him to retire as postmaster.
This church was first mentioned in the 13th century. In 1367 there was a terrible fire, and the current building was built between 1451 and 1470.
The Jamestown settlement in the Colony of Virginia was the first permanent English settlement in the Americas. It was located on the northeast bank of the James (Powhatan) River. Jamestown Settlement is a living history museum operated by the Commonwealth of Virginia, created in 1957 as Jamestown Festival Park for the 350th anniversary celebration. Today it includes a recreation of the original James Fort (c. 1607 to 1614). This is the replication of the church in the Jamestown settlement.

Built on an octagonal floor plan centered on a Greek cross, it holds the tombs and cenotaphs of the country’s most important or famous cultural figures, like explorers, presidents, poets, and even Fado diva Amália Rodrigues.
Nothing remains of the original chapel at ease; work began on the present building around 1560 when the locals, fed up with the long trek to Greystoke for the full set of sacraments, petitioned for a local church. The building as it exists today, dedicated in 1580, has had additions and alterations but retains the character of the Elizabethan structure. Visually , in its setting, the church is simply stunning.
Note - Door a tad stiff to open needs a strong push.
N.B When they eventually got their new church not only did they have to pay for a new Priest but also continue to pay a tithe to the Greystoke church. Religion didn't come cheap in those days.

I made hay while the sun shone.
My work sold.
Now, if the harvest is over
And the world cold,
Give me the bonus of laughter
As I lose hold.
The Last Laugh by John Betjeman
John Betjeman is buried in the churchyard and so is Fleur Lombard, the first female firefighter to die on duty in peacetime Britain.
The wind has blown the sand to form banks that are almost level with the roof on two sides. From the 16th century to the middle of the 19th century, the church was virtually buried by the dunes. To maintain the tithes required by the church, it had to host services at least once a year, so the vicar and parishioners descended into the sanctuary through a hole in the roof. By 1864 it was finally unearthed and the dunes were finally stabilized. Today, the church is surrounded by the Church Course of the St Enodoc Golf Club.
