Medieval Origin (1386): The church you see today primarily dates from a major rebuilding that began around 1386, funded by a significant bequest. It was largely completed by 1430, defining its character as a superb example of the late medieval Perpendicular Gothic style.
Grade I Listed: It is a Grade I Listed Building, the highest level of protection, reserved for buildings of exceptional interest.
The Tower: Its most dominant feature is the magnificent 120-foot tower, which holds the distinction of being the tallest parish church tower in Norwich. Its height is especially notable as the church sits on one of the highest points within the old city walls, earning it the nickname "St Giles-on-the-Hill."
The Restoration (1866): The church underwent a major restoration between 1866 and 1867 by the architect Richard Phipson. This Victorian restoration was extensive, particularly the chancel (the eastern end where the altar is), which Phipson completely rebuilt in a manner sympathetic to the original medieval style. Inside, Phipson's work created a spacious, light-filled interior, a "Victorian church within a medieval shell."
Enduring Features: Despite the restoration, it retains incredible medieval features, including a superb 15th-century hammer-beam roof in the nave with carved angels, and a rare 15th-century brass eagle lectern.

A Meditation on Life’s Journey.
Navigating through life is more a matter of asking the right questions to the answers you seek.
Not all answers give the complete truth, if that question is vague or hesitant.
Often considering the question in full before asking opens up doors to inner truths that you were withholding from yourself.
The answer will come unbidden, all you have to do is recognise that truth.

The Great Saint Martin Church (German: Groß Sankt Martin, mostly Groß St. Martin) is a Romanesque Catholic church in Cologne, Germany. Its foundations (circa 960 AD) rest on remnants of a Roman chapel, built on what was then an island in the Rhine. The church was later transformed into a Benedictine monastery. The current buildings, including a soaring crossing tower that is a landmark of Cologne's Old Town, were erected between 1150-1250. The architecture of its eastern end forms a triconch or trefoil plan, consisting of three apses around the crossing, similar to that at St. Maria im Kapitol. The church was badly damaged in World War II, with restoration work completed in 1985.
It is the shortest day
When the night is at its darkest
But never forget that this only makes
The light when He appears at its brightest
These days before Christmas
Are like a held breath
The universe is waiting
For when the rosy cross is born anew
And the angels will sing in harmony
As love and peace arch across the heavens
The evening steals into the church
Attracted to the promise
Of light and dark in perfect balance
Like the mystic dance of the spheres
Never forgotten since genesis
And repeated for evermore in bliss

The twenty-first of December this year found me in my local church of St.Mary’s in Old Town, Eastbourne in the UK. I decided to walk down there later on in the afternoon to see if I could capture the wonderful atmosphere within as it began to get dark outside.
The peace and stillness within this church at this time of day in the winter is something that I have always found to be extra special, as if you are being held in a close embrace. As it gets nearer Christmas, there is also a sense of anticipation that builds.
May I wish you all a peaceful and loving Christmas and New Year. Thank you to all of you who have supported me on Flickr and welcomed me with your friendship.
Sharing what we love to do creatively and what we experience has been a joy in itself for me. That you enjoy what I do astounds me every time. Thank you all, with all my heart, Shelley xxx

The beautiful Church of St Andrew in Cotterstock, near Oundle in Northamptonshire, is Grade I-Listed and dates from the 12th century - the Norman era, though the main period of construction was in the following two centuries. It features a splendid Norman doorway at this end of the west tower. Above this is a 19th century statue of St Andrew. A 14th century chancel was added after the foundation of a college at Cotterstock in 1337. Like so many English churches, St Andrew's underwent a major restoration in the second half of the 19th century, when it was also extended.
St Andrew's Church is a church within a church. It is a partly redundant grade 1 listed Anglican church in the hamlet of Covehithe in the county of Suffolk.
The oldest surrounding fabric of medieval church dates from the 14th century, although most of it is from the 15th century. A newer small church has been built at the west end of the 17th-century church against the tower. Amazing place

HFF! Today I took a long walk, while my car was in the shop. Right across from it is this church. Welcome the official start of Fall. A bike share station is just outside the church.

There is this whole inner world
That forms a beating heart of love remembered
That has been quietly keeping vigil
As the decades pass
To walk within is to travel
Backwards and forwards in time
To the same longings
Pleadings and sins
But this continued journey
Helps us to hang onto our pride
At least before a fall
The dead are waiting
The same way that we are
To be one step closer to paradise
To be that much closer to you
To begin again
All new

To enter into a church dated back to medieval times is to experience the passing of history, yet at the same time to feel time pause and give you some respite for a while.
This is the point of sacred places, they allow you that time to reflect, to rest and commune with your God if you wish. Sometimes that God will directly communicate with you.
Or perhaps previous communities who worshipped in that building will still be felt as such love that was cherished never fades. Such love is always waiting, both for the living and the dead.
This image was taken in Ripe Church, East Sussex in the UK, and is a parish church of great serenity and beauty.
I have paired this work with U2’s “Every Breaking Wave”, from their latest collection, as this version has that haunting quality to it as if it were sung in a church setting…

Metekhi Church is one of the most iconic historical landmarks in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. Perched on a cliff on the banks of the Mtkvari Kura River, overlooking the Old Town, this church offers both spiritual significance and stunning views. The original church was built in the 12th century during the reign of King Vakhtang I Gorgasali, who, according to legend, also founded Tbilisi. However, the site had previously served as a royal fortress and palace. Over the centuries, the church was destroyed and rebuilt several times, especially during invasions by foreign powers such as the Mongols. The current structure dates mainly from the 13th century. Metekhi Church is built in a typical medieval Georgian style, with a cruciform plan and a dome. The design is simple yet elegant, with solid stone walls and an austere appearance, in keeping with the ancient Georgian church architecture. The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Metekhi has strong religious and national symbolism. In addition to being a church, it was also an important place in Georgian history, as it served as a royal residence and a refuge for the population during wars. In addition, the site was used as a prison by the Russians in the 19th century, which made the location even more loaded with historical significance. In front of the church, there is a large statue of King Vakhtang I Gorgasali on horseback, the founder of Tbilisi. This statue reinforces the historical significance of the site. Today, Metekhi Church is a popular tourist destination and an active religious center, where visitors can experience the rich history of Tbilisi and enjoy panoramic views of the city.
Perched high on a cliff overlooking the Mtkvari River, the Metekhi Church in Tbilisi is one of the city’s most historic sites. Towering over the Old Town, surrounded by the serene atmosphere of the small park and the stately row of cypress trees at the back, the tranquil ambiance allows visitors to delve into the rich history of this place. Amidst these cypresses, which stand like silent sentinels, walks an elderly woman dressed in black and a headscarf, a faithful visitor to the church. She follows the narrow path, observing the subdued silence, her gaze directed towards the church entrance. Her slow, deliberate steps seem to reflect the centuries-old tradition of devotion and faith. A sacred place where spirituality and history come together.
