A church I am sure must long predate le Tombeau de Marie Joly to its west. Like the ghost of the decorated east window and wonder why it had to be filled in and partially removed...

Santa Clara Church in the convent of the same name. The convent was founded by the second Captain of Funchal, João Gonçalves da Câmara (d. 1501), whose tomb is just below the altar.

New Jerusalem Monastery

Istra, Moscow Oblast, Russia

The rotunda roof structure (blue) and the gold dome on the right have been both recently rebuilt after their destruction by the retreating German army in late 1941. The scar at the bottom left is where the bell tower once stood; the bell tower is apparently now being reconstructed.

Old Russian paint weathers to a muted watercolor appearance. This muted watercolor look is seen in this straight photo. The falling snow enhances the watercolor look.

View from under the church chandelier on the ceiling interior of the main chapel of St. Basil’s Cathedral, the Chapel of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin, with a tent roof structure. This Chapel was one of the earliest architectural experiments that placed two octagons sharing a ribbed roof on top of a square. This started a whole new trend in architecture.

Volokolamsky Raion, Moscow Oblast

The Joseph Volokolamsk Monastery is located about 100 km NW from the center of Moscow. This male monastery, which is located near the village of Teryaevo, was founded in 1479. With the exception of the early XVI c refectory building, the extant monastery structures are late XVII c.

After 1917, the monastery was variously used as a children's home, a school, and a museum. The German army occupied the monastery during WW II. The monastery was revived in 1989 and received stavropegial status in 1999.
