The Grade I listed parish church of Launceston, a former county capital, is St Mary Magdalene. St Mary Magdalene is famous for its carved granite facade which is unparalleled in England. Also famous for a large Georgian painted clockface on the tower.

Granite memorial to Dorothy (Dolly) Pentreath, fishwife of Mousehole, of whom it was claimed that she was the last native speaker of the Cornish language at her death in 1777. Many other more convincing contenders for this distinction have been put forward. It was erected in 1860 at the behest of Prince Louis Lucien Bonaparte, cousin of the French emperor and a keen linguist. Comparison with past photographs suggests that as much as half the memorial is now buried underground.

Manor owner Mark Fyodorovich Poltoratsky built this neo-gothic church. The church is essentially a copy of the 1780 Chesme Church near Saint Petersburg. The Krasnoye church was closed, gutted, and repurposed in the 1930s. Restoration started in 1979. Returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1999 (uncertain).

The ruins of the Poltoratsky manor house and overgrown park are nearby.

Exterior construction well underway.

The Grade I listed parish church of Launceston, a former county capital, is St Mary Magdalene. St Mary Magdalene is famous for its carved granite facade which is unparalleled in England. Also famous for a large Georgian painted clockface on the tower that seems to have been recently repainted. Widely regarded as the most spectacular late medieval church in Cornwall.

A church I am sure must long predate le Tombeau de Marie Joly to its west. Like the ghost of the decorated east window and wonder why it had to be filled in and partially removed...
