Liverpool 201222 #4 Liverpool’s Roman Catholic Cathedral.

My final set of shots from Liverpool’s Roman Catholic cathedral are of its beautiful circular worship area and central altar. The design is a response to the Liturgical Constitution of the Second Vatican Council which had called for a closer and more active connection between the congregation and the celebrations at the altar.

One image that I took especially for today was that of the ‘Little Town of Bethlehem’ nativity scene in one of the chapels built into the cathedral’s buttresses.

Angle view from Suzdal's Trading Rows on the beautiful ensemble of the winter Pyatnitskaya Church (at the right) and the summer Church of the Entry into Jerusalem (at the left) at Kremlyovskaya Street, in the historical center of the ancient city. The Pyatnitskaya Church is a usual winter church that was built in 1772, but it differs from other Suzdal churches.

Santa Ursula, Binangonan Rizal

Sir Lawrence Tanfield (c. 1551 to 1625), from his fine monument in the church of St John the Baptist in Burford. Sir Lawrence, who was educated at Eton College and the Inner Temple, was one of the era's most successful lawyers and politicians, rising to become a judge and Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer from 1607 to 1625 as well as MP for Woodstock and a knight of the shire for Oxfordshire from 1604.

Tanfield bought Burford Priory in 1586, where in 1603 he entertained King James I, and the manors of Burford and Great Tew in 1611. And there the trouble started. The Burgesses of Burford had long been used to running their own affairs and did not welcome the arrival of Tanfield whom they soon accused of high-handed and mean-spirited behaviour. After Tanfield employed his lawyerly wiles and successfully sued Burford Corporation, dislike turned to outright hatred. The Tanfields were harsh landlords, so it was said. "She sayth that we are more worthy to be ground to powder than to have any favour shewed to us, and that she will play the very devil among us," one local in Great Tew complained of Lady Elizabeth, Sir Lawrence's wife.

The animosity lingered for decades. Sir Lawrence and his wife were reportedly burned in effigy each year for more than two centuries after their death and a legend soon arose that the ghosts of the Tanfields would sweep down Burford High Street in a spectral carriage bringing death to all who saw it. Even after they were exorcised and plunged into the River Windrush, it was feared that their ghosts would escape if the water level fell too low.

Perhaps inevitably, Sir Lawrence's widow arranged for the family tomb to be placed in a side chapel of St John the Baptist with no forewarning and without the permission of either the priest or the town.

East Window, replacing window destroyed in the second world war. Designed by Lawrence Lee and depicts Christ in Majesty, flanked by Mary as Queen of Heaven and St Michael. Above Christ is the Holy Dove surrounded by red fruit symbolising the seven fruits of the spirt all being delivered by the Hand of Good above. On either side and below in seven separate lights are represented the seven sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation, Confession, Holy Communion, Ordination, Marriage and Holy Unction. Church of St Michael, Chenies, Buckinghamshire

This is the third church we shot during an outing Saturday morning with the Edmonton "Hobos with Nikons" group. (Yes, I shoot Canon, but they allowed me (to my great delight) to infiltrate the group.)

Heavy fog kept billowing in and out...it had lifted just enough to allow that glow on the dome (a Byzantine architectural element that has led to these orthodox buildings being known as "Onion" churches).

This church is not slated for demolition like a sister church not far down the road, the Spaca church built in 1924. This handsome cruciform building was constructed in 1935.

My sincere thanks again to the Hobos with Nikons guys for inviting me along.

Happy new week to all my Flickr and FB friends. May you know great blessings, especially the unexpected kind.

Hugs,

Sheree

The church of Saint Eustachius (Eustace) in the centre of Tavistock, Devon, was named after the Roman centurion who became a Christian. It was dedicated by Bishop Stapledon in 1318 though there are very few remains of that building today. It is effectively a wool church and was rebuilt and enlarged into its current form between 1350 and 1450, at which time the Clothworkers' Aisle (an outer south aisle sometimes known as St George's Chapel) was added. It was funded by Constance Coffyn, the widow of three wealthy wool merchants of Tavistock. This was completed in 1447 and is an indication of the growing importance of the wool and textile industry to the local economy. The trade was protected by a 1467 statute. The whole is in the Perpendicular style and consists of a nave and chancel, both with two aisles, tower and outer south aisle. It possesses a lofty tower supported on four open arches, one of which was reputedly added to accommodate the 19th century "tinners" or tin miners.

The First Chinese Baptist Church of San Francisco, founded in 1880, occupies a striking brick building at the corner of Waverly Place and Sacramento Street in the heart of Chinatown. Completed in 1942, the structure’s textured brickwork and arched fenestration evoke a sense of permanence and spiritual grounding, standing in contrast to the ornamental pagoda styles typical of neighboring buildings. Red lanterns suspended overhead signal the vibrancy of the surrounding community, while the angular fire escapes and punched window openings reinforce the church’s urban context. This architectural landmark embodies the enduring role of Chinese American faith institutions in San Francisco’s cultural fabric.
