Er ist Jahgang 1946. Auf dem Konto des gelernten Seemanns stehen 105 Formel 1 Rennen mit total 71 WM-Punkten. Als der Spanien-GP 1975 in Barcelona abgebrochen wurde, weil Rolf Stommelen in die Zuschauer flog, wurde Jochen Mass zum Sieger erklärt. Im Sportwagen von Porsche und sauber-Mercedes war er Weltklasse.
1989 siegte er auf Sauber-Mercedes in Le Mans. Die Existenzkämpfe in der Formel 1 - er fuhr Surtees, McLaren, ATS, Arrows und March, haben ihn immer angeödet. Stirling Moss nennt ihn einen "zu spät Geborenen" und reiht ihn zu sich zurück in die Epoche der hemdsärmeligen charismatischen Teufelskerle, die zwischen Alleebäumen ihre Rennen fuhren.
